Rally racing. A crucible of speed, daring, and mechanical ingenuity, where cars are pushed to their absolute limits on unforgiving stretches of tarmac, gravel, and dirt. Now in this world, Two eras in particular stand out for their distinct approaches to conquering this brutal landscape: the legendary Group B and the technologically advanced age of modern rally cars. Now today I want to answer the question which is faster, and better. The more loved and clearly more dangerous Group B era, or the safer lower HP world of modern racers. So Buckle up, as we delve into the hearts of these machines and explore which is the faster option.
So lets start this off with my personal favorite. The Group B. This era was a time of unchecked ambition and unrestrained power. Introduced in 1982, the regulations were deliberately loose, allowing manufacturers to unleash their inner demons and create rally cars that were practically deathtraps on the lose roads of the rally stages. To give you an idea of exactly how loose the rules where, homologation rules required only 200 road-going versions of a car to be produced for it to be eligible for competition. There was no weight ballast rules, no rules on max boost pressure, none of that. This made this era the ideal playground for engineers to dream up the craziest beasts ever.

My favorite racing series ever will always be the Group B rally and the Can-Am sports cars. Such amazing machines, fearless drivers, very few rules. Could never do it now, but I'm happy they did it then

WRC today is fascinating for sure. Top speed of 200 is more than enough on most stages!

Chris, Group B was nuts and the people were too close to the streets.
But the insanity was how they sounded and the power they had!
    Cheers 👍💪✌

    Hello Chris.
Yes, You are right concerning what cars are better, but...
You are tooo young, to have seen those fire spitting monsters, for example in 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland! 180 km/h, sideways on gravel, with meter long fire, out from exhaust pipes. And the sound, pounding your body.
Boy, you felt it in your bones, they were shattering inside you.
As a ret. rally driver myself, I would have given my right .., well, let`s not go there.
Those, who were there, during those crazy years, will never forget.
But as said, everything comes with a price tag. What I never will forgive, is those idiots in Italy, Corse, and other, southern rallies, those dorks contributed, to the demise of the era.
They stood on the road, in the "blind" corners!
Trying to touch a car, driving by in 150+ km/h!
Ok, it was not only roses and candy, those cars were also death traps, so, bygone is bygone, but, what a cars!

Let's face it I think most Rally fans that remember group B will have very fond memories of it I certainly do, but looking purely at which is faster Group B or WRC it's going to be WRC. Group B cars were running at 350-550 BHP and now the Ford Puma WRC is running 550bhp with 40 years of technical advances on all areas of the car so these will be faster by far.

Group B was and always will be the pinnacle of true rally imo. Not banned because of sketchy class regulations but because of idiot spectators.
S1 Quattro and ford rs200 are 2 of my all time favorite racing cars, not to mention the rs200 Evo pikes peak
