I think the "Perfect Starting Generator" depends on your comp. I've found that with certain teams the Hero Upgrades from Food have been incredibly strong all the way through the map (e.g. Zed, Bunker, Shroom).

If you play with online community and host for coop they typically go for food production just an FYI. You can just pivot to a strategy depending on what they activate first. So if anyone activate food then just go for heroes build from there. Same for the opposite, first floor determines how you play bc it's a rogue like. Never do a split in your first 2 floors bc you won't make it to the core bc you don't have the upgrades. So basically pick one particular resource to horde in the first 2 floors, after that supplement with what you lack.

yes. Food for the win. I didn't put any genereator on industry and only used turrets for buffs (shield, attack up, auto repair) and not for damage.

Yes that's 100% true never found the hero builds that good so I went mostly with towers
