  • Former England football manager Glen Hoddle talks about why he rarely selected Matt Le Tissier for his squad in international matches. Hoddle who managed England from 1996-1999 claims it was due to having Manchester United's midfielder Paul Scholes who kept Le Tissier out. #shorts #football #soccer #england

Anderton was a regular pick then in that era and had been for a while. If anything, he gambled on taking Owen as maybe his last pick for that squad so you could actually argue Owen took Tiss’ spot.

Hoddle as a manager kept his arrogance as if still a player. He used to run round the training pitch belittling lesser players by showing how to play like a god. Obviously he still had the skill of a top top creative younger player, but expected all to be able to do what he could, and maybe didn't want to be outshone

He'd have won 100 caps for France, the team that dumped Ginola and picked Guivarc'h? Or Brazil, who basically parked the bus at two World Cups in the 90s?
He never played much for England because he stayed at Southampton. Never proved himself in a big team, for England the competition was Scholes, Beckham, Merson and Gascoigne; for Southampton it was Ali Dia.
The player who was really shafted by England in the 90s was Ian Wright. Went to a big club, scored a shedload of goals every season, won more trophies than Shearer or Lineker- yet he somehow didn't go to either Euro 92 or 96. And can't be blamed for not qualifying in 94, as Taylor used him as an 80th minute sub if he picked him at all. To be fair Hoddle did seem to be finally giving him a chance when he was well past 30 and getting injury prone, but it was a bit late.
