2021 Honda Rebel 1100 DCT Review

  • For the longest time it seemed whenever Honda made a cruiser it was trying so hard to be a Harley-Davidson knock-off. Now, Honda's realized Harley buyers are just going to buy... Harley's. The 2021 Rebel 1100 is the new age of Honda "cruiser." It borrows the Africa Twin's engine, complete with DCT, but puts it in a frame that's unmistakably cruiser, yet undeniably Honda. Plus, there's cruise control!

    I’ve been “clutching” for over 4 decades and after I test rode the rebel 1100, I bought one. It’s natural to say you won’t consider one after always using a traditional transmission. My comment would be, when you combine the kind of riding cruisers are meant to do, along with the development work Honda’s put into this DCT system for the last decade, it’s an impressive system. If you get a chance you should at least take a ride. This is not a “scooter.” It has metal gears and a clutch operating 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear and a second clutch operating the 2nd, 4th and 6th gear. Four riding modes give you control over the key engine and control characteristics. As John Burns mentioned in the review, you can control the shifts “manually” with the paddles. The real difference for me then is that I can shift faster and smoother than I can on my traditional bikes.

      Thanks John T for making the effort to explain DCT, but ... I can't do it, I tried it once and along with my negative prejudice, I just couldn't do it. In the back of my mind I'm thinking, _lazy, pussy, scooters._ I enjoy shifting and clutching and deciding when to do all that cool manly stuff. Heh-heh ... so sue me.

      I have a 2017 Africa Twin DCT and love the DCT. The only thing I miss is being able to pull the clutch in and coast when it suits me. I usually do that at low speeds and when slowing down and it makes the bike smoother and quieter than having the engine engage!

      at this point Honda's DCT is just so good, perfect for cruiser, touring and adventuring.
      I always say move with the time, progress with the tech.
      For me DCT is the literally the meaning of cruisers, tourers and adv, focus on just the ride, let the machine do the job for you :)

    The new crowd grew up with clutchless cars. Many do not want to deal with clutches. DCT will allow more riders into the motorcycle world. Just like powerful cars, manual transmissions slow the bike as the computer can shift faster.

    • @dgross2009
      @dgross2009 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel bad for the "new crowd" because unfortunately they are missing out on manual shift cars which can be a blast and now motorcycles. Some probably think they are easier to ride and in most circumstances that is probably true, but in slow speed maneuvers especially it can be a real hindrance. I saw a video of a slow speed class recently in which a student dropped his DCT Goldwing a couple times trying to do tight slow turns. He was not able to do the friction zone, rear brake technique that was being taught.

    • @Voltomess
      @Voltomess 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dgross2009 the truth is nobody needs that very slow techniques you just ride make turns nobody needs to ride extremely slow and do very tight turns. and if they do they just use legs , but I know what you mean I saw those videos especcially that one ex cop from NYC traffic unit.

I'll feel better when I can visit my sister on her dead end street and do a u-turn without duck walking. This is with a clutch on my 20 street bob.

      compared to the HD Sportster 1200, the Rebel 1100 is :
      - quicker acceleration
      - way better handling (near naked bike level)
      - lighter
      - way more reliable
      - twice longer service intervals
      - has cruise control
      - and Hepco makes perfect leather side bags with key locks for it, also engine guards and other stuff.
      The HD Sportster 1200 cannot keep up in most areas, not even a Street Bob 114.
      The Indian Scout is cooler but heavier and sadly does not have all the tech of the new 2022 Indian Chief.

      I don’t think “don’t want to shift” is the motivator really. If you ride in heavy traffic that clutch hand can get burned out from constant clutching. Others might have mobility issues with the left hand or foot. Don’t think those folks are served by assumptions that DCT is about laziness or disinterest in shifting.

    I got my licence on a Rebel, so I have a weak spot for it. A 1100 Rebel is something I would love to try.
    I hope when I get your age I am still confidently riding like you sir. Good review.

    If they combined the Rebel 500 with the DCT they would kill the beginner bike market

    I actually saw one of these, a red one, an older gent parked it at the local supermarket and walked in. Don’t know what he was planning to buy, because he had no luggage option- maybe a candy bar?
    Anyway, in person, a beautiful bike. Definitely on my short list.

    allows those with physical limitations to enjoy riding. something alot of these so called "men" who are calling automatics "pussy" bikes seem to neglect. it only takes one bad accident to alter your abilities in life. great job by honda

    So many Honda's are boring. It looks like John is having a slight problem getting excited about the 1100. I can understand that.
    Yeah, Honda gave up trying to become Harleys. I can understand that too.
