The loops in his hair could be a sign of strength in his culture since they must be heavy! Those who wear them are seen as powerful and intimidating and the more a person has, supposedly the stronger they are. However this could become a trend with those in the lower classes who cannot collect heavy metal loops etc. but who use light weight materials or plastics in an attempt to make themselves look stronger than they are. So oftentimes you see urchins running in the streets with tiny plastic loops braided into their hair (similar to how beads would be) in an attempt to look tough. :)

status symbol in his area of the steampunk universe he belongs to. in his world, metal is obviously a useful commodity, so being able to use it for purely aesthetic reasons is a display of means and craftiness, showing that you can scavenge very well. or something. idk.

Tbh this is a really good analysis. Practicality is important when designing a character however in real life most people wear things purely because they like wearing them and not because it’s practical. There’s nothing practical about jewelry of any kind but people still wear it because they like it so why can’t fantasy characters do the same?
Maybe to show his worth or possibly he is part of some group and you wear these rings to show you are one of them
@@miles9364 ooh, dude, what if the hair rings are a symbol of ranking in some sort of scavengers association, or a symbol of resistance or something? (idk this universes story, but most steampunk universes have some sort of conflict, hence the 'punk' influence)
I really like how respectful you are when you make characters with visible disabilities. There's never any condescension or anything. They're just another interesting character that you put time and effort into creating. Thank you.

I love how the prosthetic arm doesn't function exactly like the real arm, personally. Real prosthetics don't work quite the same as flesh limbs and few people seem to acknowledge that.

Something tells me you need to tell the story of the shrinky dinks.
While I agree that most of the time practicality is important in character design or costume design, I think sometimes fashion is enough reason to make decisions.
Like, where is the practicality in widening your earlobe and putting a hoop inside? Yet people do it, and even in a cyberpunk setting they would do things that make them look badass just for the fuck of it.
Also it could be a cultural thing, like with the ear widening in some places. Or it could be social/statice signal like how in the Ming dynasty noble women would grow their nails to ridiculously impractical lengths to show their statice
@@mirandathepandakitty1630 Great points! Most of the time it probably comes from culture and status anyway, even in our modern fashion most styles are inspired by all sorts of cultures and status.
And another idea that I just had is also that sometimes trends come from some subcultural or political statement.
As someone who has stretched earlobe piercings, it was absolutely just because it looks cool- (in my case, anyways)

The heavy ring in his hair balances out the strain on his neck and right shoulder caused by his artificial arm. It's part of a carburetor to his grandfather's favorite car. The same car he and his beloved grandfather crashed in one night. Ty survived, with injuries to his arm. His grandfather was not so lucky. Ty continued to be a street mechanic in honor of him and kept the ring hanging over his heart to remind him. Also, he hangs things on it that his right hand can't hold while his left hand is busy. The other rings in his hair are not nearly so heavy and just balance out his look.

Yes, functionality is an important part, yet when you design a character you also got to have in mind that it is, in fact, a *character* with their own back story, likings etc. We like to style our hair so why wouldn't this character like so too?
Having a purely functional design for a person always takes away from their "humanity" and personality, in my opinion.
We like to do random shit purely out of 'aesthetic', so let made up characters have that liberty too and go wild :D

The hair loop could be a status symbol or a fashion statement in universe? He’s clearly a fighter, so maybe the hair loop is to symbolize his role as a warrior and someone you wouldn’t want to fight. Just a thought.

It’s a unique mix of concepts, but I think that’s what makes it so good. The creativity required to make something nobody’s ever seen before is sick.

I have a decent backstory for the prosthetic arm.
He was a traveler in the Japan / Korea region trying to make money by selling things that he had found on his adventures. On an adventure to find a mystic artifact that rested deep underground and surrounded by treasure, Ty Tanium was cornered by a legendary beast known to show no mercy to the people who try an enter the cavern. With only a few weapons, a mastery over Kendo and Taekwondo to his name, he tried to escape. Ty Tanium used his skills to dodge the beast’s mighty blows but he got pinned to the cold ground. He struggled to escape the monstrous grip and just barely moved out of the way to dodge what could have been the final blow but not unscathed. The beast had taken part of his forearm clean off. Ty, with a sense of adrenaline, escaped and swore to never return until he was ready. The doctors could only remove the rest of his forearm to stop the infection that had taken place but had no proper prosthetic for the price Ty could pay. He was enraged by this, and with the help of his sister, (maybe a future doll) created his own arm.
I hope you like my backstory behind it.

I like to think Ty is a scavenger and sells some of the bits he collects on his travels, sort of like a wandering merchant, and frequently tells stories of his adventures, though it becomes quickly apparent he's probably making most of it up, as his tales always change!

I love him!! I really like that didn't just do a paint job on an existing arm to make it look "steampunky" but went the extra mile to make a prosthetic with parts and a hook like on real ones! that's so so cool!

He looks a bit more post-apocalyptic/diesel-punk instead of steampunk but is still awesome.
90% rubbing alcohol on a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser or something similar is perfect for removing Deuce's and Jackson's tattooing, as well as the face paint on the big dolls. It won't harm the plastic.

In response to the little hair do-dads, I actually do this! I currently have some tiny gold rings and circles tied into my hair now! It's a common hippy/pirate themed hair style/accessory!

Maybe someone could use those hair hoop thingies for some kinda hair weights? Like if they have a lot of hair they don't want to cut, but they're tired of it flying everywhere in breezes and such?

Sorta like that, I guess. As a way to keep their hair from flying all over the place, probably. But you gotta admit, you still wanna be careful with those things. They might swing around, and that could be dangerous. :/ So, maybe 50/50 on function over fashion??

@Sage Elwell I knew someone who was born without one of his arms. He could hold smaller things, like a can, in the crook of his arm right before the stump or balance them between his upper arm and his chest. This doll's arm stops before the elbow, but with the prosthetic I figure he could at least balance it against his chest.
I'd also guess that if you lost your dominant hand you'd learn to use your other hand for things, otherwise people who had lost their dominant arm but didn't have a good prosthetic couldn't write or anything, and I know they can. It'd probably just be weird at first, like learning to use a pencil for the first time.
I know this is old but I have to share it. A while ago I saw a dude with a prosthetic hand on the subway - except it was actually a freaking hook. He had a metal hook hand as a prosthetic. I tried not to stare but seriously how cool is that. OK that's all thanks

I know I’m late to the party, but I just wanted to say the hair do-dads may actually have a very good reason for being there; style! All throughout history you can see cultures doing things with fashion that doesn’t have a reason beyond it looks cool. Maybe in Tys culture, rings in the hair started out small and over generations got bigger and bigger until eventually someone else said “hey Ty, what’s with the rings?” And he said “well tat’s just part of the culture.” Totally fine design, and it does look awesome!!
Ok, this is probably my favourite doll you’ve done so far. I love the punk/grunge vibes (especially the blue hair), and I think your use of a beer can for the arm is inspired! Someone make a backstory!
