  • This is episode 42 of my unreal engine 4 beginner tutorial series, in today's episode we show you a quick introduction to creating AI inside of the engine, having said that you'll be able to create an additional character that can sense the pawn and follow it accordingly!
    This is all done through blueprints, I explain how to create an AI class, navigation elements, the components required and show you how to set up the required scripts to get it moving!

    I've been looking at hours of tutorials that teaches the AI equivalent of how to build a car before showing you how to drive. Then I found this gem and I have a character following me after 5 minutes. Thank you.

      +Virtus Education This is great but.... unfortunately it replicates the many Vision sense tutorials already in the wild.
      Could you please, abso-totally-pretty-please, create a basic Hearing/Emission tutorial for beginners. Because it simply doesn't exist.

    Just an FYI for those wanting to adjust the peripheral vision to be more accurate, the depth perception angle for a human covers 114 degrees (horizontally) and 70 degrees for peripheral, so setting it to 70 gives a good representation of real life.

      i usually set FOV in games i play to around 85 so it feels more natural and not the"tunnel vision" that most of the devs think is right, i guess he made no exception to that statement :D
      also the 70 degrees peripheral is that for each eye or ? i can sense movement up to about 170 degree's so even if added up it still not right.

    I was watching Matt's intro to Unreal and I have found his avoidance of casts great. It also served as a good introduction to Blueprint Interfaces. Avoid casts, if possible people

    This is very nice, thank you. It always helps to have someone explain it so it seems so simple, much better than playing around with it for hours on end. Just seeing everything else I could do with this so easily helped a lot! Personal note: My first thought upon seeing "Upon success" was to have 5 AI's move to the point of a pentagram and suicide on them - Should I be seeking professional counsel? :P

      There's a lot of work required to created more advanced AI. If you follow along with learning blueprints you'll figure out how you can move him, create different behaviours and such. I will be making a video on more advanced AI shortly.

    I have a question. In my project when I start it dosen't start with you being a specific character rather it spawns a new one where you put the player start object. How do I make so that it starts from a specific character like you did.

    Dudes, i see all these problems in comment section and believe me i had all the same problems, even in the ither projects, but listen its posible to fix all of these, my advice is to go watch this video many times to understand it, try to make a new Project and watch the video closely, look what is in your ue4 and what isnt, if you found the issue and you think that it is the issue, go watch other videos how to fix it and then comeback, this helped me alot!

    so when doing the Pawn-Sensing can i put a lock on it so that it only sticks to the head of the AI because im making AI that will patrol and when stopping at a cartain point they will look around the room with their head and i was wondering would the pawn sensing follow the direction the head is looking when doing the animation??

    At first my pawn wasn't moving so I watched the next video and copied everything there and he still wasn't moving. Turns out my navmeshboundsvolume wasn't high enough and it wasn't covering the full mesh I was using. I scaled up my navmesh and the character moved!

    Hi Virtus,
    I followed this video and my Enemy character isnt doing the walk animation, he does the Idle but when he starts following the character he just slides along the ground. Also he doesnt rotate to follow the player, he just stays facing the same way I placed him in the level and once my player is out of his view he just stops. Any help would be great cheers.

    when i try the first time the aichar don't follow me but i discovery that the nave mesh must be in certain position to see it you must press p and where is green is where the ai can go.

    I can't get this work. You have a lot of other stuff in the third person character blueprint than I have. I've deleted only jump, walk etc and only few nodes was left there. I don't know if this same procedure still works with this newer version of ue4 editor?

    I have a question: most ppl say do not use cast that often cz its gonna the game slow; however, on AI part, I've seen everybody using "cast to" node everywhere. I am very confused, can I use cast to as often as it is needed, or I should try design AI without using cast to at all?

    Hey I use for that BP from Behavior Tree but I can't create reference to OnSeePawn(Sensing) because this event work only in BP_Class :( Any solution?

    Any ideas on how to make the AI stop sensing/chasing the player?
    I've been trying a few things, but nothing is working correctly, the AI continues to chase after the player even when the player is long out of range...

    thanks for help, just at 3:06 you said let's delete all the input stuff, but the main blueprint scrypt is there.. i think because of that enemy ai is not walkin, just sliding.

    Hey man, nice tutorial. I loved! I'm trying to make a AI, but I'm having a problem! I made a AI and I made a damage system and I define 4 animation of attack, after this I did a random var to define each hour 1 different attack, do you know? Like the first time the AI attack with the animation 1, after I just run and the next attack will be random. My problem is, when the AI attack, the others attack too, wherever they are, and I have no idea to fix it. Can you help me? How can I make a AI attack separated, where the first AI is not linked with the another one? Thank you!

    Great tutorial, thank you! I tried it and it worked but i was wanting to have the enemy AI to approach the player from all directions much like the third person one in the tutorial but I'm using the side scroll template so the AI only follows along the x axis going side to side. Wondering if you have any ides or suggestions.

    Dumb question, on my AI I have them set to wander around to random parts of the navigable area of the map. Where do I tie in the On See Pawn portion of the event graph? Im using the first person example map to work this all out and have imported my working blueprint for the wandering AI, and all the anim starter pack, third person stuff and all else is working fine.
