    I wish I still had mine. Scramble is a moderately complicated game, and the fact they were able to replicate it as well as they did, with the opening music and all the different stages, on this hardware is really quite impressive.

    We had a helicopter one similar. An Invader 1000 shaped like a space ship n a Pacman LCD, incredibly noisy (which is where Back in black on th walkman came in) but awesome fun!:👍😄

    I don't know why TH-cam recommended this video, but I'm glad it did. Even though I'm a 50 year old GenXer, my mind is still in the 80s and 90s. It was such a great time to be alive, to see the beginnings of tech that is taken for granted today. Though I never had this particular game, I did have something similar. Such memories.

    I was a kid in the 80s who played the heck out of Tomy Scramble. I didn’t have a computer or console at the time and when my friend accidentally left this at my house after bringing it over it was like all my Christmases came at once. I was obsessed. But I never got one of my own until 2000 when I was temporarily working in another city and saw a retro toy shop next door (these were the days when that was barely even a concept). I spoke to the guy behind the counter and told him how much I loved Tomy Scramble back in the day and he said he had one out the back with a pretty beat up box and since I was obviously buying it for fun rather than as an investment, he sold it to me for a song. Fast forward to now and my kids have it in their toy cupboard and occasionally play it themselves. It still goes strong probably due to it having been made in Japan.

    I'm an original owner (and still have all these years later!) a Tomy Scramble and Tron. Bought them on clearance in the summer of 1983, at KB Toys. FYI, the original retail sticker price was US$55.95, marked down 75% off to US$13.99. Scramble originally belonged to my younger brother, and while works, is a bit UV-yellowed and worn. My Tomy Tron, however, is in near-mint condition, with original box, packing and instructions! Loved these back in the day!

    When I had the Vectrex system, I played their great version of Scramble quite often.

    Maaaaan that is a beautiful unit and also looks like a ton of fun, congrats. I think I need to put this on my to-buy list. As you said the VFD graphics do a great job of approximating the arcade game. It’s been awhile since I played my Dig Dug VFD tabletop unit but that also has interesting workarounds (if I remember correctly rocks double as part of the Pooka’s bodies). Fun fact: Scramble was Konami’s horizontal shoot ‘em up precursor to Gradius which has a somewhat similar “gauge” item bar system and in the final level instead of a base unit, you have to carefully weave through a barrier in order to shoot a giant brain.

    Crazy to see a White one with it's correct name! This game was also released by Tomy as Astro Blaster and is Ferrari Red with a Purple base. It was also released by Tomy again but branded Konami and was oddly called Alien Attack which was Silver with a Purple base. BTW, there is an LCD Scramble by Grandstand which is almost a copy of this game, however it's not worth getting if you have the Tomy one as your more than likely complete it on your first go, most of the Grandstand LCD games lack any sort of long term challenge...

    I hear ya brother! I don't have shrinkwrap on any of my collector-status game cartridges. First the boxes are usually 75% empty, and the shrinkwrap continues shrinking, warping the box. Second, every circuit board was born to have electricity run through it at least once. Even if I have a digital copy of a vintage game, I will still pop in the cartridge/disc/cassette at least once.
    When did collectors become so anal ? (That being said, all my 70's/80's manuals and magazines are in sealed plastic sleeves. I learned my lesson with my mother's 1940's Hit-Parader magazines. So yellow and dry that the pages literally deteriorate as you turn them. Not letting the same happen to Compute and Home Computer or my game manuals).
    I tore the flysheet manual for Miner2049er when I was scanning all my manuals for upload to AtariAge. Before that, the box and manual were mint. Nearly threw the scanner across the room (except I still had another couple dozaen manuals to copy.
    But games are meant to be played!

    Didn't even know there was a Scramble handheld game, or a TRON one, even. I had the old Battlestar Galactica Mattel game, it was pretty boring!

      I still have a copy of this game. Pretty good for ‘78. :)

    I have Caveman and Tron but no Scramble.

    Totally agree with you on both points. I open my toys as well, and the Ward’s label absolutely has to stay - having that still stuck to the box is just a little bit of extra 80s goodness 😊

    I still have my Grandstand handheld version which looks way better graphically TBH.

      Haven't seen that one.

      I had the tabletop Grandstand one, think I still have it somewhere. Pretty sure was different from this tho. Had a small joystick on it and the display was different, as was the gameplay.

      @@GenXGrownUp When you pulled out that one, I was surprised that it was different and didn't have a joystick. I think you could go any direction with mine, hence the joystick. Maybe it's a UK version.

      I used to have Epoch Astro Command… essentially the same game. It was pretty good!

    I will never understand seeking out a sealed version just to open it. I understand wanting to open it but, if that’s the intent, I’d buy one that wasn’t new for that purpose. A forty year old product and now there’s one less brand new one in existence. For what?

    • @GenXGrownUp

      Sealed products are only of value to investors. I'm not investing - I'm collecting and enjoying. 😀

      @SumDumGy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GenXGrownUp Clearly that’s a false statement. I’m not an investor and sealed products have value to me. I collect and enjoy, as well. I collect new to collect new. I collect to enjoy to collect to enjoy. If I want to play a thing, I buy one that isn’t sealed to play and try to leave the sealed products for someone who would apprentice it as just that.

      @GenXGrownUp  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SumDumGy OK, fair enough. You find value in collecting sealed items. I don't. I like to play with the toys I buy, and I don't have the luxury of buying two and keeping one sealed. Of course condition matters, and a great way to ensure good condition is to purchase sealed.

    • @SumDumGy
      @SumDumGy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GenXGrownUp I find value in keeping sealed items sealed. I find value in collecting sealed items when I want to own a sealed item. If I want an item to play with, I collect an open one. If my priority is playing (like yours), I wouldn’t seek out a sealed game for that.
      Condition does matter. So does patience in a search.
