I always thought about that. If you like a photo - is it because you like the lighting, composition etc. or do you just think the subject is nice or beautiful, or visa versa. Is a mediocre photo of a beautiful better than a perfect photo of a not so beautiful model?
The beauty of the subject can have some importance... or better, there must be some harmony with the subject... but someone can have the most beautiful subject and still create an ugly picture...
Good point. There is a guy on Lomography who mostly posts ugly shots of his two small dogs. Roll after roll of small fat dog images. But I do not criticize or comment if I don't like his work. I just click next, as you say. Not worth my time. He can do whatever he likes. If he manages to make a nice shot I'll click like. Cheers!
Sometime I wonder why people with no sense of aesthetic dedicate themselves to visual art but keep it to myself... but when they hide behind the subject and start to accuse others of the trendy -ism just to not accept a critique, I really get annoyed.
