  • A great 3 day, 70km adventure, starting from Ruatahuna in the heart of Te Urewera. After a week of heavy rain, we decided to still make the most of the Queen's Birthday long weekend. We intended to do a loop of the Whakatane and Waikare Rivers, stopping at Hanamahihi Hut and Takurua Hut, but we were forced to turn around on the second day.
    Although not quite what we planned, it was still a great adventure, taking us to four huts, past wild horses and through amazing scenery.
    30km into the bush, on our second day, we met an unexpected companion who joined us for the remainder of the trip.
    This channel is dedicated to my upcoming walk on the 3000km Te Araroa Trail, sharing my experiences and trying to raise the funds I will need to achieve this. Any financial help through Buy me a Coffee (www.buymeacoffee.com/onthetra...) would be greatly appreciated, but even a simple video like or channel subscribe will help. Thank you and enjoy!

      Yes, it turned into a long day after the 4 hour drive down there as well!

      Yes, it's an amazing area - I'd like to get back down there and walk right through to Ruatoki Rd. There would be some nice swimming spots along the river in summer.

    The river flow is very clear... and the forest is very lush...
    The environment is really good...this is a suitable place for camping...

      Yes, it is a beautiful area and a great place to camp. Thanks for watching. Great to see you like the outdoors as well - Indonesia is a lovely country. I spent a month in Bali and Lombok a few years ago and would love to return.

    Awesome video did you have to get permission for this trip from any land owners? Or is it all Doc

    • @onthetrailnz
      @onthetrailnz  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, no you don't need permission for this trip - things might be different down there now with the hut removals though. Lucky we went there when we did.

    This looks like an amazing hike. Maybe too long and hard for me!! How deep do you think the river that you had to turn back from was? Better to be safe, especially with rain coming in!! A huge effort again. Enjoy the coffee I bought on your support link :)

      Yes, it was a great adventure. The river was probably waist deep, but the current was very strong after the heavy rain all week. There was going to be 50-100 river crossings that day, so we made the right call. Thanks so much for the coffee - the money will go towards my Te Araroa journey. Much appreciated.

    Apart from the dogge did you meet any locals on your walk?

    • @onthetrailnz
      @onthetrailnz  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, we didn't see anyone our whole trip apart from the dog. We did see another couple of dogs run past on the middle day though.

    Well done mate. That is awesome country - a pity you couldn't go along the Waikare river, but it looks like good decision making. I've been along that river, and lost my boot sole in the process - the rest of the trip was done with the sole held on by elastoplast. Nice to see a cousin taking to the backblocks - well, your Grandpa's cousin, but that makes you one as well!

      Thanks for your comment. Yes, it's awesome country - it sounds like you had a bit of an adventure when you were there! Hopefully we'll get back down there when the weather is better. It would be good to hear more about your adventures.

    Great tramp, pity the locals dogs are still roaming free, killing Kiwi at will.

      Yes, it is unfortunate. I've heard a lot of dogs get abandoned there.
