      And it was on WLEX and WDKY in Lexington (which both carried the show every Late Saturday/Early Sunday at 1:00am), WLKY in Louisville (which carried it every Saturday at 11:30pm) and the now-defunct WBKI in Campbellsville, which carried American Gladiators every Saturday Afternoon at 3:00pm as part of a 3-hour Saturday Afternoon block right before WWF Superstars and WCW Worldwide! BTW, does anyone have the promos for American Gladiators, WWF Superstars and WCW Worldwide (a.k.a. the Saturday Afternoon 3-hour Action Block on WGRB Channel 34) on WGRB (which later became WBKI)?

    It's interesting looking at these progression of videos one after the other. The first season intro was like a humble beginning, with its distinct 80s style and character intros. Then starting from the 2nd season onwards, the show started to hit its peak of popularity, and it showed in the more "electric" intros. Then in the later seasons, you can tell the show was on the decline, and the intros were revamped into the distinct 90s style, with its flashy graphics...to make it seem fresh again.

    Its interesting how you can see the rise and decline of the show just from the intros.
    0:00 - tiny studio, incredibly low budget
    1:18- show is a hit, budget increased big time. New arena, more gladiators, new theme, new events
    3:38 to 5:23 - When the show was on the rise, more focus on the Gladiators and this is when the branched out with videogames, toys, etc
    5:26 - This is when the show peaked. budget increases again and the show gets a major overhaul. Brand new arena, new logo, theme, Gladiators and events
    6:35 - Show is on the decline and they are desperate throwing things at the wall and seeing what sticks which is evident by this ridiculous opening that looks like some kind of high school drama
    7:08 - The decline continues, budget slashed bigtime with a scaled down presentation. Even the Gladiators look like they are wondering if they will even have jobs soon.

      The first season is so cheesy! Between the Gladiators' character intros, them being presented as villains, the masked "ninja", and the cardboard cutout fans, I can't get enough of it! 😂

    Excellent show! It was one of my favorites! My favorite gladiators were Gemini, Blaze, Laser, Lace, Siren (RIP), Tower, Sabre and Nitro 😍
    Also, am I the only one who loves how Sabre went from a competitor to one of the gladiators? 🏅

    • @TehJew22
      @TehJew22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? Sabre was a competitor?!

    • @hbdragon88
      @hbdragon88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Storm tried out as a competitor and was instead picked to be a gladiator.
      Laser was best friends/roommates with Nitro. In fact, both were 'replacement players' with the Rams during the 1987 NFL strike.
      Sky was first known as Athena, but she didn't like it, so she went with her childhood nickname Sky. She was recruited during their 50-week traveling tour as a 'replacement' to give the other gladiators a break and to rest up while they were injured.
      Nitro, Zap, and Gemini were all fired for wanting a cut of the merchandising. Nitro was lured back with the promise of being a host for the next season, while Zap was brought back as a contestant. But it was iffy since the other gladiators didn't want to fight against Zap.

    Instantly, American Gladiators became a global phenomenon and ran in the U.S. for eight years, from 1989 and going off the air in 1997.
    While the show was still in production at the same time, USA Network was the first network to air/rebroacast reruns of American Gladiators, acquiring a total of 104 episodes. In 1992, USA began airing episodes daily in the late afternoon following its game show rerun lineup and preceding Cartoon Express, and later moved the episodes to air as part of its mid-morning lineup. The network initially aired the reruns over four (4) years, it had rights to the first three seasons and picked up rights to the fourth season to their package when it was completed and finished airing in 1993, but did not pick up any additional seasons beyond that by the time the network stopped airing the series. USA aired reruns sometime through at least on September 13, 1996, just as the show ended its original run.
    Spike TV purchased a rerun package they began airing during their last days as The National Network in 2002. Originally airing weekday afternoons and late night Saturdays, Spike eventually scaled back the reruns to the late Saturday airing and then dropped them in 2003. Spike was only given rights to seasons two through four in their entirety, special episodes from seasons five and six, season seven in its entirety, and both editions of International Gladiators in their entirety.
    In 2007, ESPN added the entire original series to ESPN Classic's lineup. This meant that the non-specials from seasons five and six saw their first airings since their respective seasons and the first season, including the episodes under the original format, would be seen for the first time since USA carried the series. ESPN Classic briefly pulled the original American Gladiators series from its lineup shortly after a revival premiered in 2008, but returned it after the revival concluded. ESPN permanently removed the show from ESPN Classic in 2009.
    In 2017, after an absence from television lasting several years, American Gladiators reruns returned to the air with the launch of the Sinclair Broadcast Group's action-themed broadcast network Charge!. Edited reruns of the UK Gladiators series were also added. As of 2020, both shows are no longer on the Charge! schedule.
    As of April 2018, SI TV (Sports Illustrated TV) has added the original series to their premium channel add on for Amazon Prime.
    In October 2019, a channel dedicated to the original show, as well as the 2008 revival was added to Pluto TV on channel 136, later channel 303. Episodes spanned the entire run of both shows, with only the International Gladiators episodes absent. On October 1, 2021, the channel was removed from the lineup. Several episodes are available for download on Apple's iTunes Service.

    We laughed, and he said, "You watched that show, too, huh?" I told him I never missed it when it ran on television. I said, "Hey, at least these kids don't have a steroid-crazed Gladiator chasing them up that thing! And, it's a lot _smaller,_ too!" He agreed, and we both laughed again.

    Warning: The AMERICAN GLADIATORS and its contestants are highly-trained athletes and have a lifetime of experience, but they are not, I repeat, not invincible. Bodies have been broken, necks broken, legs broken, concussions, inflicted, lives shattered and careers ended in a instant. Although it is sports entertainment, but the hazards are real, and both the contestants and the Gladiators takes real-live risks, endure unimaginable pain, and put their bodies, their careers and their lives on the line.

    It was too bad the 7th season was it's last. That modification to the set made it look like you were about to see something epic (the new lights and that huge AG logo there). Makes you wonder what they could've done with an 8th season if they could've gotten it. Was my favorite set version.
    EDIT: The G in the final season was copying off of the G logo of the UK version, and it seemed like they were trying to go that way since the UK struck gold the way they made it into how much went into their production values. I could imagine them moving into a bigger arena if they had another season to copy that, too.
