  • The President of Palau and Balaji discuss how the tiny island country is becoming a digital leader, experimenting with everything from on-chain identity to drone delivery.
Despite having less than 20,000 citizens, Palau is a full UN member state. Its path to diplomatic recognition holds many lessons for aspiring founders of new communities. We definitely need a Palau representative in our DAO of Locals worldwide, having 1000+ active members with excellent Web3 knowledge we can be helpful for The Republic of Palau.

Super cool! I'm a digital nomad currently living in Lisbon. However, the cost of living and regulations are not ideal for me anymore. I might go to Palau this year to explore since I'm a big fan of diving!! Thanks for this episode!

Impressed with how the podcast is providing coverage on these broad (yet critical) areas. Can't wait to see where this goes.

As somebody who lives in Singapore, the only thing which stops me from visiting Palau is the lack of flights. If this can be fixed, I'm sure there'll be a lot more people visiting.

Fly through Taipei. China Airlines flies from Taipei to Palau. I went on a dive trip to Palau in 2010, and a several people in the group flew on China Airlines from LAX to Taipei, then from Taipei to Palau.

Have been reading The Network State (and every single linked reference), and have now seen all three episodes of your podcast.
There are many people who would gladly sign up for this experiment - me being one.
I’ve not heard you address the question re: Ethereum’s move to Proof of Stake and the inherent risks of such. Would greatly enjoy your take on it, as the move has made me question the future of ETH.
Thank you for these contributions to discourse.

    Great interview. Thank you Balaji!
'We were 'sovereign' ' . This requires more unpacking. It is something I find a bit of an agitant in the 'sovereignty' discussion.
I want to hear more about how Palau does its policing and its transition away from former 'full' sovereignty.and
What could they really add or contribute to 'interpol'? Will they simply receive or pay for information/cooperation?
    @45:15
Estonia is 1.5 million. Bottom 25 countries 'recognized' by the u.n. by population are all under 500k population. And have almost NO military.
One does not need military to be 'legitimate' . However, there is a distinction between countries that fund capacity to invade and protect others from invasion.
'More' or 'Less' people doesn't mean better or worse.
Human's are not cattle to be measured by numbers.
    And still,
There is a reason the 'security' counsel exists'. If a country cannot muster the effort to have a military of some sort, it's not exactly 'sovereign' at the full level of sovereignty. After all, Why did sea-land fail? If you cannot be conquered by someone and 'accepted' as territory, or cannot yourself conquer others, an aspiring 'soveriegn' nation will be in the middle ground of unrecognized states that the u.n. is not forced to acknowledge ( somewhat akin to 'palestine' ) or the state will be a'special economic zones' which simply put, are Not fully sovereign.
See past the next set of wars/instabilities. Full sovereignty will eventually 'stress tested' by some form of violence and reshaping up the globe. Now more than ever , micro nations can hope to have full sovereignty by using technology intelligently to protect their borders and even project force if and when necessary. Having enormous amounts of fresh bodies is no longer necessary or sufficient for sovereignty.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population_(United_Nations)
I would say Palau will Not likely be the Cayman's of the east, and it's Not Lichtenstein. No way no how.
I would say your next interview should be the Sultan of Brunei's Chief of Staff. It would be hard to get him on. But that's the Real Lichtenstein. And they are extremely powerful for their size. Good luck on getting that interview.

Balaji your camera is mirrored when streamed from laptop (B roll I guess)
Try the next video without it.
Also swoosh scene break effect is great
Also, mentioning different concept in the middle of the talk (Hainsenman League) should be linked (could be)
Also, can you explore systems such as Dabawala?
Also, company tokenisation is a topic that could be interesting.
Live format where we vet to ask Q’s is interesting.

Don't know what to think of this. On the one hand it's cool that Web3 identity is becoming reality. On the other it's clearly and uneven relationship and there isn't anyone in the Palau government who has any idea about this. The fact that he mentions partnering with Ripple speaks for itself.
It's a small country and the president seems like he's genuinely trying, so kudos to him. I just have a feeling that they're going to get exploited because this is completely out of their control once there's proper adoption and everyone has been brought on-chain. Maybe that's how it's always been for remote places though.
