    Written Chinese is very logical and avoids unnecessary complications. Love Cantonese, which predates Putonghua by more than 1,000 years and is probably most similar to classical Chinese.👍❤

    Is it easier for an English speaker to go English > Cantonese > Mandarin?
    Or English > Mandarin > Cantonese?

    • @droidgeist
      @droidgeist 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can't make up my mind - I'm in England, and nearly all the Chinese people here are Cantonese speakers, so that's a definite pro in favour of Cantonese. But people also say Mandarin is more standardised and has fewer tones, so that's a pro in favour of Mandarin...

    • @eugifanz3291
      @eugifanz3291 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@droidgeist in my opinion, I think going from English > Mandarin > Cantonese might be easier... I think it’s easier to learn the 4 mandarin tones before learning the Cantonese tones (however, you may get mixed up between both)

      I learned mandarin for four years now and have just started learning cantonese. I definitely feel learning Mandarin first has really helped me with cantonese.

    You have to write the numbers all the time ? When you write to a cantonese person?

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Native speakers will likely be able to guess the words so no number is needed. The numbers are for learners to know which tone the word is in.

      That's why learning the Cantonese tones is important! A change of tone leads to change of meaning :)
      "Jazz" in Cantonese is zoek3 si6; while "bird poop" is zoek3 si2 😂🎶🐦

      The Cantonese tones are not easy to master, but hang in there! Listen to the samples more and try to think of them as music notes, this method works for some learners.
