    My family has been going to Skye every year between 2 and 6 times a year since 1971. I've been just about every year of my life as well. It's an absolutely beautiful place, but going there can be a bit sad for me as most of the people with whom my family were close friends on the island and who I met/stayed with as a young child have sadly passed. When I was young, we would always go to a specific restaurant where almost everyone in there would know my Grandad from his decades of visiting. The lady who made the food used to make mussels, which weren't on the menu, for my Grandad every time we came to visit. Now when we go in there, we're surrounded by tourists, and no different from anyone else. Everyone we used to eat and drink and laugh with has either passed away or moved elsewhere. Going to Skye is now an odd experience for me

      I'm sorry to hear that. I know what it's like when a place full of memories changes ... and it doesn't feel like the same place anymore.
      My advice to you is hang on to those happy memories - because nobody can take that away from you.

    Thanks for that mate, brought back lots of memories! Neist Point lighthouse used to have self-catering accommodation in the keepers cottages, we stayed there for a week ages ago, memorable holiday, the windows were covered in spray when it was rough. One of the best views on Skye is the Cuillin from Elgol, with an epic drive to get there. Fortunately, most tourists don’t make it that far.

    Don't forget - if traveling in the fall or early spring the sun comes up late and goes down early early. You will only have a narrow window to see your sites. Also, many of the roads that lead to the sightseeing sites are single lane with periodic "pass buys" and driving is taxing. The good news is people drive very very slow on Isle of Skye so be cautious and you'll be OK.

      To answer your question: the largest and most civilised town is Portree, it's got shops, restaurants, hotels, the visitor centre etc. so this is probably the best place to stay as it's in the middle of all the things you want to see.
      There are other places you can stay on the island, yes - but Portree will make your life the easiest.

    This was apparently the largest mountain range on the planet during Pangea. After many eons it has eroded of course but supposedly the Highlands made the Rockies look flat, they were supposed to be monumentally massive.

      @@UltimateBucketList There are a few places on the planet that I have been to that you can still, somewhat, see the outline of what once was. Isle of Skye is one of them. For example when you are standing on the edge of the cliff and looking out over the ocean. To me that area you were standing on was once an ancient mountain peak where the waterfall flowed downward into more lower ground mountain terrain. Isle is Skye is really weird in a geological sense in that it is so close to the north pole and yet remains so green which happens, quite literally, nowhere else on that long/lat line. No idea why it happens there, it's a mystery.

      You could drive around Skye in a day, but you won't be stopping to see anything. The best thing to do is set aside two days (or possibly more) for this place, especially if the weather is good.
      Plenty of car hire places from Glasgow/Edinburgh, they're all pretty much the same. If you're coming from the airport, their car hire places are just as good as any you'll find in the city.

    Bucket list suggestion. Chittagong Hill Tracts Bangladesh. Very difficult place to get to, and when I did it a few years ago now I needed a mi.itary guard. Reason being the people who live there are basically Stone Age and live in very primitive conditions. However, the scenery is incredible, and the Bangladeshi Govt. are trying to promote the area as a tourist attraction. There is a pretty decent Govt run hotel up there. Glencoe is very nice - it's a beautiful spot. But if you don't plan on walking out into the wilderness to find the waterfalls or climb the Glen, admittedly there's not that much to do.
      If it's a quick whistle-stop on the way to Skye, I recommend going to the visitor centre and take some of the views from there as well as get something to eat and drink. But other than that, Skye is much more interesting.

      Ideally, staying in the town of Portree will give you the most options and it's like the centrepoint for everything you want to see and do. Whilst I can't recommend any specific hotels, there are plenty of guesthouses and places to stay in the town so you won't struggle to pick something nice.

    I plan on going to the Isle of Sky at the end of July. I am a photographer and am looking to get it all. How long should I go for and what places do you suggest I stay
    when in the Isle of Sky?

    • @UltimateBucketList
      @UltimateBucketList  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks for stopping by.
      - I managed to drone and photograph most of the island in about three days, but spending another couple of days there wouldn’t hurt.
      - As far as location is concerned, anywhere near the town of Portree is your best bet, as you can get to anywhere on the island from there (it’s almost like a centrepoint). It’s also the most civilised, so finding supplies, groceries, fuel etc. isn’t a problem. The main attractions (such as the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock Falls, the Quirang etc. are literally on the one road that goes north from the town.
      - But to be honest, anywhere along the main road that runs through the island (the A87) is fine.
      - Be warned - the weather changes in an instant up there, even in July - so bring cold and wet weather gear, even if it’s 100 degrees outside!
      Hope that helps?!

    • @UltimateBucketList
      @UltimateBucketList  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Micky. It's a tough one, because the roads are so narrow.
      There are things like buses etc. but you'd really have to learn the transport system there to get by via public transport.
      Besides, it's way more fun to hire a car and drive yourself through the mountains.

      Geary's a crofting township rather than a fishing village but all crofters had small, clinker built boats and got some of their food from the sea. These boats were their equivalent of private cars, In 1820 they walked or rowed to go anywhere and the coast is so indented that rowing was often quicker.

    Although I quite liked your video and commentary, there are a couple of mistakes. The Fairy Pools are a series if small waterfalls in a little river running down from the Cuillin Hills, you will not find any seals. The sea stacks at 4.50 are on the north coast of the mainland. Also, the Q in Quiraing is pronounced as a K. Thanks for the memories though.

    • @UltimateBucketList
      @UltimateBucketList  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are remote parts of the island yes, but quite a lot of it is civilised with shops, restaurants, supermarkets etc.
      The one big advantage of Skye is that it's permanently attached the the mainland via a bridge, so you can leave any time.
      With the other Scottish islands, you need a ferry to get there ... and when the weather is bad (as it sometimes is) they sometimes stop the ferries, meaning you're stranded.
      But on Skye - this is not a problem.
