- August 20, 1991 ... Ian & Martin & Dave Pegg sat in with Paul Shaffer & Company playing "Rocks On The Road", "Like A Tall Thin Girl", "Mother Goose/Jack-A-Lynn", "Bourée" ... and what actually was broadcast that night: A Medley of Aqualung/Locomotive Breath/Black Sunday... on "The Late Show" with David Letterman.
Letterman rocks, if for no other reason, he has had Tull the band, and Ian the man, as guests both in the 1980s and in recent history. Ian was the "guest" musician about 2007 or 2008, if I am remembering correctly. This was strange to watch, but I appreciate Letterman inviting the greatest rock band on, when so few other main stream media even recognize them.
How in hell did Letterman get him to do that?? What a spectacular little glimpse into the talent of this man.
that's just what Ian Anderson did when he was onstage
i love his voice i grew up with tull its some of the best music even today.
Wow, what a great performance, he's barely lost a thing.
IAN is sooooooAMAZING
The house band seemed to be really enjoying playing this
ES IMPRESIONANTE LO QUE ÉSTE SEÑOR HACE CON UNA SIMPLE FLAUTA TRAVESERA.......
Just incredible...
I LOVE YOU, IAN😍🥰😍
" Tullhead" what a very funny name...Love it.
Also Ian and the band played spectacularly.
and BLACK SUNDAY!!!!!
Anderson..Dios🎼🎼🎼🤘👍🎷🎸🎺🎻🎤
Ian said he was embarrassed that David didn't introduce Martin.
Why wasn’t the entire Tull lineup then there?
Super awesome...
Wow, this must be 15 years after To Old to Rock and Roll, but he finally has the look of the title character from the album cover.
I feel like this is a pretty good performance for Ian after the 80's stuff. It's a good mix of his old voice and the voice he has to live with. It sounds mature almost.
It's "Black Sunday" from the "A" album. It's also the opening song from the 1980 Video "Slipstream" ... because they opened the "A" tour with that song. It's a great tune... and very difficult to play. As Ian said, there's no place to take a breath.
Been a fan for 47 years. In 71 got into two groups. Anderson and Zappa. Can't get any better than that.
Holy Crap!
drats and i want to get that black sunday piece down on flute too. well nothing like a challenge :)

What?! The backup band goes from the greatest tull tunes to jackson 5?! I wonder how Ian and Martin went about that.
@OdysseyIntoOblivion yeah, it is sad, but he can still play the hell out of a flute!!!
Pretty handy Acoustic Guitar player too☝️😁
cool, cooler, ian
Do you still remember
December's foggy freeze
when the ice that
clings on to your beard was
screaming agony
+Antonio Castillo And you snatch your rattling last breaths,
With deep sea diver sounds,
And the flowers bloom like madness,
In the spring
+Tyler Calhoun sun streaking cold, an old man wondering lonely. taking time's the only way he knows.
Leg hurting bad,
As he bends to pick a dog end,
He goes down to the bog and warms his feet,
I sure do, man.
I remember it well.
Buddy McCue
Aqualung my friend
Don't you start away uneasy
You poor old sod
You see it's only me, it's only ah me
maybe ... but sometimes truth can be harsh .. good luck to you
@themountainviewguy ... FYI : a "dogend" is a cigarette butt in Brit-speak.
That's because it's supposed to be him in that comic.
That is the great Martin Barre on guitar-not Dave!
Ian looks like a swashbuckler in this video.
He - & THIS! - WAS❕👏😄😁
And do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing?
@@NuntiusLegis Good thing, definitely.
4 bieber fans.,
yeah ;D
Ray Lomas.
Ray Lomas ,straight from the album artwork. Great album by the way!
@@johnmccord1752 - Right-o John. Funny the album cover came out in 1976 and this performance was 1991!
What I could never understand is why Ian's speaking voice still sounds the same, but he's lost all his nasal resonance when he sings. Theoretically his singing voice should sound the same, despite his age. His voice sounds constricted and stuck in his throat, almost like he's had a perpetual cold. I know that he blew his voice out on the "Under Wraps" tour, but one would think that it would have recovered with rest and therapy. Perhaps he did permanent damage, I don't know. Still love him though

voice gone!
Yeh ive followed Tull over the years and his voice seemed to get more strained with each passing decade .
I'm a singer and to be honest none of Tulls songs were especially in a high register. He's only 44 years old here
and shouldn't really be having voice problems just yet.I don't think he was or is a heavy smoker or drinker and definitely didnt take hard drugs so its a bit of a mystery to me as to why he had voice issues at quite a young age.
Flute playing just gets better though.I saw him about 5 years ago and i thought his vocal performance was pretty awful.Luck of the draw i suppose.Shame but one of the all time greats as far as i'm concerned.
If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say Ian is a businessman first now, and probably since he became a big success. He tries to cram too many shows into too few days and overstrains his voice and ruined it. Plus, he did smoke a lot, and for someone who is so priggish about never having taken a drug it seems kind of hypocritical. I just wonder if Ian not taking drugs is more about being a control freak and in control than any medical or philosophical reason. The control aspect is one thing that has rising in proportion with the decline of Jethro Tull's music, especially its feeling aspects. Ian's music these days is wonderful technically, but it is dry and empty of emotion.
Aqualung, great song, but not exactly the song you want to go on to Letterman to perform? Weird. A middle aged man singing about eyeing little girls with bad intent while snot runs UP his nose ... why, is he hanging upside down ?? ;-)
+justgivemethetruth Listen again snot is running down his nose it always has !
+Dan Sears
But how does snot run down one's nose? It always starts running at the bottom of your nose, unless you are upside down.
Maybe he's sitting upside down on a park bench
Back in Tull's prime, Ian Anderson was one of the best front men out there. You couldn't take your eyes off him.
+rodentcafeteria Still is ! Just seen his (Ian Anderson's ) Jethro Tull a Rock Opera in Cincinnati. The best show he ever put on, And I've seen Tull over a dozen times. Look it up on U tube.
+Dan Sears Thanks, will do!!
It's nice when long time fans try to put a positive spin on things. I've seen lots and lots of Tull concerts and Ian hasn't really put on a good show in decades. You can see that by looking at all these great videos out there and noticing that neither Ian or the band ever smile or seem like they have having a good time ... they hate it, but it is their job, for money. Ian has made his "art" all about money, and like lots of things when they become products, the ingredients get cheaper and adulterated.
No, he made his art when there was no guarantee of money from the recording and the tours paid for his art. As far as I'm concerned he can not smile or seem like he's not having a good time until his dying day. Their music is in the soundtrack of my life and they can do whatever they want with their songs. Too bad his voice is gone :(
This is past his prime; his voice has already gone.
Letterman also championed Warren Zevon over the many years. Letterman is always fine in my book.
Awesome flute player nobody can touch him
That's musicianship kids.
Is anyone else reminded of Christopher Lloyd when they see Ian's random expressions, especially at 2:04-2:11?
Why wasn’t the entire Tull lineup then there?
OMG what a rock band.....! Rocks forever...!
at first I thought they were just going to play the flute solo from Locomotive Breath, hehe.
hahaha ian looks like the character of "Too old to rock and roll : too young to die" comic!!!!
Never saw this one thanks for posting
Nothing comparable to that
Above You there’s No Other
@Howardtripper That might be what it means in other countries, but it's not what Anderson meant. He was using it in the British slang sense, where a "dog end" is the discarded stub of a cigarette. Tramps are closely associated with picking up and trying to smoke dog ends.
LEGENDARY!
epic
Just Love Him...them!
I actually requested this on a local radio station and they refused to play it due to its content
Look at how skinny Ian is.
superb blackpool lad done good
Dunfermline
He is from Dunfermline, but worked in Blackpool.
Yeah his voice is gone but they're still one of the most fun live bands to see
I love Jethro tull but... What happened to his voice? Is he just old or did something happen to him?
After the under Wraps Tour he was very ill with his Throat. There he has lost the most of his Powervoice. I am German and my English is not so good
I don't think we're allowed to sing about anyone eyeing little girls with bad intent anymore boohoo LOL
