For the millionth time I have explained the term "happiness" used in the "happiness index" as someone from Greece moving to Scandinavia, the reality is very simple. Happiness by their definition is closer to carelessness, being able to enjoy basic stuff, and being content with life. It doesn't mean haha all day, nor stupidly being smiley the whole day after someone told you his dog died from extensive diarrhea, nor that you don't have problems in your life and thus coping mechanisms like alcohol, etc. Honestly, once I moved for an internship in Finland I got to experience that "happiness" and honestly it is so refreshing. Being able to hear some bad news and knowing that you can't change the outcome and that most likely the system is there to make the process smooth is just amazing. Being able to go out and just ignore minor inconveniences is amazing. In Greece where everything is held together by the thinnest string a single unlucky event just snowballs into a terrible week and with a bit of bad luck a whole month can be ruined because you were late once in your job, because the public bus just broke. The other thing that I love about them is how much they appreciate peace. Anywhere I've been before an uninterrupted day is taken for granted, in Norway and Finland it was very common to hear from others at the end of the day "How nice the day was smooth and easygoing" and the best part about them is that their whole society is built around making sure your day is smooth and easygoing.

It's honestly really funny to realize that Finland is technically part of Eastern Europe, but is way happier and wealthier than any other Eastern European nation.
Just like Greece is technically part of South Eastern Europe, it's literally neighboring the Balkans but it's still considered "Western Europe" because people from Western Europe want to brag about ancient Greek culture and take it as their own.

Actually taxes are low. The video was overstating them. Except for all the mental health programs that have been going on for the last several decades that are tackling overuse of alcohol and suicide which have led to the decline of this over time
The fuck is the government supposed to do about suicide? Government programs can only get you so far. The roots of the issue are in culture, not in politics. Religion, for instance, is a good institution against suicide and mental problems because it gives meaning to your life and a strong community (which many are lacking in the modern age). Is it any surprise that Finland being one of the most secular countries in Europe, it has also the one of the highest suicide rates. Also the super dark winters might also have something to do with higher depression, speaking of personal experience.
@@spacemanke3814 lots of opinions but I'm not seeing you cite any evidence, and government policies to tackle social problems are built on evidence not opinion (particularly in Finland which is why it does so well in terms of social outcomes)
A niche Finland also excels in is death metal. The Finnish scene was known for a strange and unorthodox take on the genre. The best example is probably Demilich, who played in irregular time signatures, used off-kilter riffs and had completely alien vocals, often compared to a burping frog. They only released one full-length album and went largely unnoticed before dissolving in the early 90s, but gained a cult following on the internet and are now regarded as highly influential to the genre. They even reformed and are touring live due to the newfound appreciation. Other great Finnish death metal artists include Rippikoulu, Demigod, Adramelech, Krypts, Slugathor and Galvanizer.
Thank Finland for doing well in the Winter War. If they didn't do well, the Germans may have decided to prepare for Operation Barbarossa with winter in mind.
The Germans DID have winter in mind when they planned Operation Barbarossa.
No , the reason Greece is considered "Western" is because it sided with NATO during the Cold War
@@ht14Which Finland didn't do up until 2023
@@JmKrokY But they are in the EU for longer and while officially neutral during the cold war you would be hard pressed to find people who genuinely supported the Soviets at the time.

The reason alcohol is so expensive is because back in the day people drank too much so the government started heavily taxing it. Same thing with smoking.
But then the government went and made its people rich so they can afford to stay alcoholics! Very good. Maybe other countries can try this?

There is this theory that self deletion numbers are higher when there is no war or other extreme crisis because then you are not faced with the question of survival, but the question of succes or failure in life, of being who you want to be or being a nobody. Make sure to visit Northern Finland as well besides Helsinki. The variety we have here between southern and northern Finland is large, not to mention everything between aka. land of thousand lakes. Hope you have a nice visit :)

During winter time you wanna head up as in north like Rovaniemi but during summer time you might wanna stick to down as in south like Helsinki, Turku, Tampere etc. When you come to Finland as a tourist understand that you are there to visit so day time if not a national holiday or a summer vacation Finns are working and going to school so you wont see us until maybe around 16-17 coming and going. Also note that around 15-16 during winter time it gets dark. So if you come to Finland it would be a good idea to check out what is available and when.
4:04 The Fins knew exactly how many people died in battle, the Soviets didn't care to count them.
My Summer Car gave a pretty accurate representation then huh

wowmao is so wrong about there not being a kebab restaurant anywhere. there are so many good kebab chains in finland, theyre usually just small restaurants and you have to look for them on google maps to even notice them on the streets. king kebab is one of the best ones, unfortunately there arent too many of them :(

The people have high income so it doesn't matter
@@jjcoola998 people don't go weekly to hospitals.
Actually taxes are low. The video was overstating them. Do some comparisons and take into account that Finland has "progressive taxes" which means the higher the income the higher the rate. of course rich people don't pay income tax so high income tax doesn't affect them and corporate tax rate is extremely low.
@@Tespri I think that commenter means that in the US you need to pay regular health insurance contributions and medical debt payments if this isn't covered in your employer health plan. It's basically a hidden tax in the US that doesn't show up in tax rates.

I love that the two highest tier Polish supporters are Polsko-Gruzinski pakt anty-Ruski (Polish-Georgian anti russian pact (but russian is said in a more derogatory way that just doesn't exist in English)) and Zosia (Sophie)
Nah Ruski exists as a derogatory term in English too
Fun fact about Alan Wake 2:

The janitor in the game is played by famous finnish actor Martti Suosalo. He got the bafta award for best supporting role for that act.
As a Nicaraguan planning to live in Finland, this is a good video
Why do you want to come here?
As a Finn, we are so happy because our government doesn’t do anything about suicide.
Except for all the mental health programs that have been going on for the last several decades that are tackling overuse of alcohol and suicide which have led to the decline of this over time
What would they do? The government can't just ban suicide. What would be a solution?

They did do the operation.
The Germans DID have winter in mind when they planned Operation Barbarossa. "Muh Russian winter" is literally a racist myth that the Nazis invented to cope with losing to the Soviets, because Hitler told them going in that the Soviets were inferior to "pure blooded Aryans." Western Europeans are just all so extremely racist that you can't deal woth the fact that Slavs defeated you fair and square. Do you seriously think German people don't know what snow is?
