Thanks for a great video! For anyone out there, I used this as a template to do the same maintenance on an old Calcutta 100 I had laying around. Piece of advice (even if you're feeling adventurous) : DO NOT completely disassemble the levelwind mechanism, I almost never got it back together, and there was very little to no grime/dirt that needed to be cleaned from those parts. Don't go any further than he does in this video.
Thanks for the video it was very helpful. My dad has three of these that have spent years unused, and collecting grime in his garage. When they were in use I doubt they were ever cleaned or oiled. Yesterday I took one apart and cleaned it using your video as a guide. I was surprised how clean the internals were, although there was almost no sign of reel grease, I imagine it had evaporated. I was also surprised how much easier the reel was to disassemble , clean and reassemble compared to my more modern, low profile bait casters.
Glad you like them! Shimano Corsairs and their other non-Calcutta round bait casters are well made and comparable to the Ambassadeurs. Thanks for sharing - Dennis
Hi Dennis, Great reel and detailed video with memories of earlier servicings of four of these I did for my friend. Looks like you're ready for some more WD 40 too !! Best wishes, Cons
I purchase Penn Precision reel greases and oils through Mysticparts.com. here is the link to the page with those products www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Lubes/Penn.aspx. Thanks for asking Dennis
The problem will be in the free spool mechanism. You need to check how it is set. Make sure to push down on the metal lever on the back of the gear side plate and raise up on the thumb bar when installing that back on to the frame
I found a Calcutta at my local flea market that looked like it was in Good shape but it was 80$. Too rich for my blood I’m totally ignorant of it’s value. Would that be a real I could use like a modern bait caster? Like throw around lures for catching large mouth bass?
Yes that is a fair price and can be used for casting, but the Calcutta is really designed for deep lakes or inshore ocean. It may be a little too heavy for bass

YW - glad to have helped keep the reels fishing - Yes the grease and oil do evaporate and dry up - Best wishes - Dennis
I love these old Shimano round baitcasters. I like the Sweedish Ambassadeur a little more but I still use a Corsair 401a and 301a often

Yes - these are the automatic with the unique thumb release bail trip. They weren't that popular, but we still see them - Thanks for asking - Dennis
