message to harry manback makes me cry laughing every time i hear it. that's an actual voicemail they received back in the day which makes it so much funnier. putting it on the album is the best.
You noticed an improvement in bass on this album... because this album is where Tool made the switch from Pual D'Amour to Justin Chancellor. Great reaction. Next two songs have great lyrics!
Even though Undertow is a great album, it's my least favorite tool album purely because Justin is way more interesting of a bass player. It makes sense that Paul left to play guitar in other bands because he approached the bass parts like a guitar player, and his bass lines were often echoing what Adam was playing on guitar, whereas Justin is often driving the melody of the songs with his playing.
I’ve watched several of your tool reaction videos. You do a great job giving your two cents in what the meaning of the lyrics are, and also just reading the lyrics as they are because, as you said, it can be hard to hear sometimes. My son and I are flying from Utah to New York to see them at Madison Square Garden this Friday and we are so excited.
Hey, I'm really enjoying your Tool reactions more than every other channel out there that I've seen do them. The chronological journey is really something special to share with us Tool fans. And I think your interpretations are pretty spot on and observant.
Maynard, and the rest of the band, are the Hookers; selling their selves/music to the world. They played this one in Louisville a few weeks ago and it was so fun to sing along.
This is honestly one of my favorite songs from them, and for a somewhat silly reason- it shows their basic side. They have so many deep, well-thought-out songs, but then they have this relatively short song complaining about a fan. It feels like a great 'vent' song, it shows that they are just people like us. It's also amazingly catchy and great to rock out to when you're peeved XD
The last four tracks on this album are still amongst my favorite all time Tool songs. The transformation they take becomes very apparent. You're spiraling out from this point bro!
MJK's lifelong tirades against hypocrisy have continued in Tool's music even through to the most recent release, Fear Inoculum. Gotta love his continuity of artistic integrity.
I like where they placed this song, it's a bit more of the heavy, ironically enough, "light-hearted" Tool, before we dive back into the deeper, more emotional stuff that comes next. Serves as a nice little resurfacing to take a breath, before diving back down.
After listening to, and embracing Tool's entire discography over the years, I understand why Hooker With A Penis may be their most visceral song ever. Because Tool is about as genuine as it gets, I can see how challenging their authenticity and integrety would cause Maynard to write these lyrics (with this music).
Oh!!! I adore your snake insight of 46&2. Since a snake is a symbol of wisdom, shedding totally makes sense in growing in knowledge. 🥰 Really looking forward to your reaction to Aenima as that was my favorite Tool song until Pneuma came out. Keep posting please! Your videos are the best!

I got lucky enough to see them play this live in February! (they never play this 😆) MOAR TOOL SKULLZ. I'm hooked. Your reactions rock!
It was a message to Maynard specifically. Way back when, a friend of a friend asked Maynard to put up an acquaintance of his for a few days who was flying in from another country. ( which one wasn't specified ) Maynard picked up this person from the airport who proceeded to not leave Maynards couch for the next two weeks, eating everything in his refrigerator and racking up gigantic long distance charges on his phone. Maynard finally had enough and told the guy he had until the end of the day to get out. Two days later Maynard came home to that message on his answering machine.
Oh man. Jimmy is next. This song I ended up appreciating twice. I didn't know the actual lyrics for years, nor anything about Maynard's life. After I learned all that and revisited Jimmy it choked me up. I was blown away again despite having heard it 50 times.
hooker is definitely in my top favorites for tool... its a great chance to hear mjk angry. he is always passionate but rarely angry like this. I love the voice cracks in screaming it let's you know he ment it

Loved it when Maynard picked out a guy during this song at the 25th april concert in Hamburg Germany, focused him and pointed his mittle finger at him in the "fuck you , buddy" part. :D
Supposedly when they rented the loft from Bill Manspeaker in LA (founder of the band Green Jelly which Maynard did guest vocals on a couple songs) they had one of those guests that crazy parties get. You know the guy that walks in off the street to drink, eat and be merry for free that nobody knows or noticed until it was too late. Anyway they had legendary parties where some major drugs were done and this guy apparently cleaned out their fridge and later left this message on one of the band members answering machine. They didn't know his name so they called him Harry Manback as in Hairy Man Back. I saw an interview with Danny and Bill Manspeaker where they explained it once, I think I have the details correct but it was long ago.
The connection between a bunch of Tool songs and Bill Manspeaker is kinda funny.... isn't he the one that claimed to have been abducted by aliens and was the inspiration for Rosetta Stoned?
@@hunterfitch5951 Probably I can't remember. There are a lot of interesting connections to Bill, the loft and the band. Tom Morello and Maynard talking music and forming the ideas for their bands. I'll try again separately from this.

So I got a OGT92 tattoo BECAUSE of this song just to point out I'm a dick and hypocrite. Everyone is to some extent. I just need a reminder sometimes, so I got it on my knuckles.
The story I read/heard was there was a house band members were renting a house, one day an Italian guy turned up and was staying on the couch, everyone thought someone else in the house knew him, turns out no one did so they kicked him out and he left that message and another one (message to Harry Manback 2). Or something along those lines
Some Tool songs do have a fairly straightforward message. HWAP is one of them. Its also one of their nastiest and hardest songs. Like you said, sometimes a song doesn't need to have much depth or high ambition.

Always imagined the music video for this track, where a person is yelling at themself into a free standing mirror, with the camera sporadically panning 360° around. No matter what they do, they can't destroy the mirror, and can only give themself the middle finger.
Funny you bring up Underworld because A Perfect Circle has a song on that movie’s soundtrack it’s called Weak and Powerless ( Tilling My Own Grave remix) that’s a really bad ass song you should check it out sometime. I’m really digging your journey through the Tool catalog. Very good spot on first reaction observations.
Hi! Skullz...could you please play the next 2 songs back 2 back with no stops? I've been a fan since 92', it's my favorite & it's how the band wanted them to be heard ✌& ty.
When I saw them live this February, this was the song they played before intermission, and my friend who I was worth, turned to me during the outro and just said "Holy Fuck!" This is because when Danny hit that double bass at the end, we could not only feel it in our chest, but throughout our entire body, from across the arena. Seriously, go see them live. It' just can't be explained. My only regret is not being a fan in my teens so I could have seen them during the Lateralus tour.
hooker with a penis is one of my all time favorite tools songs precisely because it's very straightforward, highly inflammatory, and the instrumentals and vocals are just going nuts in fairly short period of time. it's a song that is unique for tool but IMO doesn't lack in talent. it's almost like an interlude, along with the answering machine.
the song is purposefully Moree straightforward. the record execs wanted a more radio friendly, short-length song. they wrote this last minute as a f** u to them.
Love how the kids basically a walking advertisement and then has the balls to call Tool sell-outs. “I sold my soul to make a record, then you bought one”
@@Skullzrapper have you done any Puscifer maynards 3rd band the latest album is a fun listen but all their albums have some classics I know I heard you say you listen to APC but didn't know if Puscifer was on your radar. Great reaction BTW
This is a statement from Tool. Not meant to be deep. Danny is nearing death metal at the end. HARDEST SONG NEXT TO JERK-OFF. Most brutal in a great, transparent message and sound. 💯
Ok ok.. Subscribing.. Just because you appreciate it, a lot. Just kidding. Tool army here. Subscribing cuz I want to see you becoming one of us. I'll go back and put a like in every video of yours just to help you out. You are an intelligent human being. Cheers
" In typical Tool fashion, I'm having trouble hearing what he's saying." .....yeah.....From what I know, that was intentional to create balance between all instruments in the mix.
I admit I love this song because angry Maynard is fun Maynard. There may not be a more abstract message than being pissed at a dude calling them sellouts for growing (and calling out the system that. akes us all products to be bought and sold) but sometimes you need to acknowledge you're pissed and scream about. And Maynard is *hilarious* when he does so. And the song is a jam.
Maynard does know how to be direct. 😀 You have likely since learned, but if not Harry Manback was an actual voice mail left on the answering machine of a friend of the band (the singer for Green Jelly) by his former roomate. Allegedly he slept with the guy's girl friend.
The song was about a trendy hipster telling Maynard that HE sold out once they got popular. IIRC, OGT is original gangsta Tool, or a term for the fans that listened to them since the beginning, when they weren't popular. Basically, he was pulling the hipster move of saying he knew X band before they were popular. The guy didn't see the irony that he was telling them they sold out when this guy was embracing every cool trend at the time. Essentially, he sold out to everything selling him something that was the trend. The point is we all sell out to an extent, and though this guy thinks he knows who the band is, all he knows is what they "sold him".
The punk side of Tool yeah! As much as I love the proggy direction of Tool, I wish they would sometimes come back to this "in your face" meat and potatoes style.
""new"" tattoo that claimed that he was OGT, always came off to me to say that this "fan" was just a poser. like having a tattoo from 92 would be more authentic than something brand new to make such a claim.
Nice job again, I agree that this is a pretty straightforward track, one of my least favourite tracks in the Tool discography. Still a killer track but the bar is set so high. See you on the next one. Thanks for doing this, mate. 👍

Tool4life😉🎶🤘🏽
Love how the kids basically a walking advertisement and then has the balls to call Tool sell-outs. “I sold my soul to make a record, then you bought one”
I always have interpreted the song title as Maynard referring to himself as the "Hooker with a penis" as he sells himself in his records
I think you're dead on 💯🤘🌀
I always took the title to mean ' we are the same and you also sell yourself ' and the title is clearly a dig at the ogt
Message to Harry is like a comedy show to me, I can't NOT laugh every time.
There's something funny about how chill the dude is while saying all those horrible things 😂
Let's go
🔥🔥🔥
@@Skullzrapper have you done any Puscifer maynards 3rd band the latest album is a fun listen but all their albums have some classics I know I heard you say you listen to APC but didn't know if Puscifer was on your radar. Great reaction BTW
Thanks man! I've heard absolutely nothing from Puscifer! I'm excited to get into them at some point!
Sup bro 🤟😎 Let's goooo 🔥🔥🔥
Great reaction fam 🙌
Appreciate it Jared 🔥🔥🔥
This is a statement from Tool. Not meant to be deep. Danny is nearing death metal at the end. HARDEST SONG NEXT TO JERK-OFF. Most brutal in a great, transparent message and sound. 💯
Don't forget Ticks and Leeches, goes pretty hard too 🤘
Ok ok.. Subscribing.. Just because you appreciate it, a lot. Just kidding. Tool army here. Subscribing cuz I want to see you becoming one of us. I'll go back and put a like in every video of yours just to help you out. You are an intelligent human being. Cheers
I appreciate it...... A LOT lol Much love 🤘
It was his landlord. lol. They're all cool now.
" In typical Tool fashion, I'm having trouble hearing what he's saying." .....yeah.....From what I know, that was intentional to create balance between all instruments in the mix.
I can’t wait till you get into Lateralus
This is a great live tune! Angry Maynard for sure.
Spiral out brother 🤘🏼🌀🌀🌀
I admit I love this song because angry Maynard is fun Maynard. There may not be a more abstract message than being pissed at a dude calling them sellouts for growing (and calling out the system that. akes us all products to be bought and sold) but sometimes you need to acknowledge you're pissed and scream about. And Maynard is *hilarious* when he does so. And the song is a jam.
100% agree! I actually have a much greater appreciation for this song now after listening to it a bunch 🤘
Maynard does know how to be direct. 😀
You have likely since learned, but if not Harry Manback was an actual voice mail left on the answering machine of a friend of the band (the singer for Green Jelly) by his former roomate.
Well, this is when Justin chancellor joined Tool, so different bassist different sound
The punk side of Tool yeah! As much as I love the proggy direction of Tool, I wish they would sometimes come back to this "in your face" meat and potatoes style.
Probably the best diss track of 96.
well, that certainly wasn't a very friendly voice-mail.
😂😂😂
""new"" tattoo that claimed that he was OGT, always came off to me to say that this "fan" was just a poser. like having a tattoo from 92 would be more authentic than something brand new to make such a claim.
It jumps.
different Bass player From, Undertow to AEnima
Nice job again, I agree that this is a pretty straightforward track, one of my least favourite tracks in the Tool discography. Still a killer track but the bar is set so high. See you on the next one. Thanks for doing this, mate. 👍
Appreciate you! Yeah still a great song, just a bit less ambitious compared to the rest of the album. Still awesome though 🔥
If you like nine inch nails you should check out ministry, Old school industrial and where Trent got his inspiration
Maynard needs more waffles. 😉
Pretty sure Maynard is referring to himself with the title
Lol well said.
Was kinda low key hoping this one was going to be about Maynard's son :P
lmao parents have to call out their kids BS too
or the bass player, at that time, but before , dig ,cool beans
