This video demonstrates the Alternating Cast On (often called the "Italian cast on"), which creates a beautiful edge for k1p1 ribbing. The result of this cast on resembles the tubular cast on, but is structurally different, and easier to work, particularly for projects worked in the round. The cast on is demonstrated for flat knitting and in the round. How to tell apart the "knit" cast on stitches from the "purl" cast on stitchess is explained.
