  • In this episode we are working on the cylinder heads for the 7.3 IDI turbo engine, including reaming and honing valve guides, doing a valve job with cutters from Neway Manufacturing, lapping the valves, installing valve seals, and assembling the cylinder heads. As usual, we are working in the garage, so this is all stuff that YOU can do at home!

Thank you for explaining everything so well. I've never rebuilt an idi but your videos teach me a lot

Narrow seats will seal a lot faster, wide seats will last a lot longer and tend not burn as fast. Good work at home! Thanks for the content~!

Yep, narrow seats do seal better, but good points on wide seats, too. thanks

Just found your videos. I have always been a gearhead doing wild stuff like custom bodywork and making vehicles fit to my personality. There has always been a couple of things that I have been apprehensive about doing, engine rebuilds and gear setup on axles. I really appreciate the videos, I’ll be giving this a shot soon.

More beautiful work! Good catch finding the Valve seal bosses were machined smaller. Would have been a smokey disaster if you didnt catch that

Thanks, Paul! I guess the shop that rebuilt the heads ran out of the correct sized valve seals so they just machined the bosses down to the size they had on hand! Scott

I’m a bit worried about the positive exhaust stem seal, they come with the umbrella type so some oil does get fogged down to help cool and lube, some buildup does develop and acts as a sacrificial layer between the two but it builds up the seal also. I’m curious to see if any issues arise. I’m building a 6.9 turbo with a ton of upgrades including the comp springs so I appreciate the struggle you had with oem style seals binding. What cutter kit were you using to dial in the seats?

The cutters are from Neway. www.newaymfg.com/cutters thanks

Hi Jack - I just used the 7.3 IDI Service Manual. I'm sure there's one out there for the 6.9 as well. You can probably find it with a Google search. Good luck, Scott
