    By what I've watched just now if there is anyone that has any beef with what this dude just did, then you don't have a clue. This guy knows his shit and I'm very shocked that I've finally seen someone do them almost identical to the way I do them. I was taught from generations of tile setters and I am so thankful for what they taught me and what I've learned. Now over 24 years and still going strong here. But this guy is on top of it no doubt. Much respect man good video. Done a few Wedis, bunches of Schluters, few Tile Redis, and even some KBRS Hard Cores and other few but I still like the old school way from scratch with the dry pack mortar bed and rocking the walls and then mud and tape and then liquid waterproof at least 2 coats and then I finally get to lay some tile with thin set of course

    I got a chuckle when he pulled up that sub-floor plywood. When I did mine on a recent remodel, that plywood was glued, screwed, and nailed down. HO-LEE-CRAP was it hard as hell to remove. Large chunks stayed bonded to the beams and I had to scrape them away. I'm dreading this in my master bath remodel. If it could always be this easy! Great video.

    i took a 5 foot three sided fiberglas tub/shower enclosure (a nice one from Lowes) and sunk it to where the "tub" section was flush with the floor and made a 6 inch half moon fiberglas step down inside on the tubs floor then i put a typical shower head on each end of shower enclosure. really turned out nice and have had many compliments.

    fantastic videos. i'm looking to convert my mom's shower to a walk in shower, generally is it cheaper to go with a prebuilt resin shower kit or DIY tiling? not counting labor as either way i'd be doing it all myself

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it depends on many variables but tiling can be more cost-effective. Plus you’ll want to add solid blocking in the walls for grab bars or even a foldable shower seat, and these methods in our video are in line with that project. Let us know if you have any questions, my email is jeff@homerepairtutor.com

But first I need to select the correct shower pan/tray. I have 4 variables, and need advice making the right selection. Home Repair Tutor The size is somewhat negotiable. I have two definite walls and one wall I am going to build which will I close a toilet room. The placement of the wall is based on the shower pan I choose. The fourth side (opposite of shower head) will be open curb less and door less. Fun right? I wish I could show a photo, it would make sense.

    Home Repair Tutor, thank you very much for the video. I am going to do install one in the near future (maybe) based off your video. I recently bought a house and the last owner just installed a new tile shower (DIY project for sure). There are no leaks when it runs normally (regular shower), but one time I placed a wash cloth over the drain so my son had a few inches of water to play in. When I lifted the cloth to "drain" the shower, I had water leak downstairs. I think the water creates a little pressure as all that water is draining through the P trap after the drain. When I opened up the ceiling and replicated the "leak" it looked like it was leaking from the bottom of the drain. After watching your video, Im wondering if the installer simply didn't silicone the vinyl to the actual drain. What are your thoughts on this? Is this normal? I don't want to tear a "new" shower out, but I also want to make sure it is done right.
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    1) These can be cut? The shower are I need to do is only ~ 3ft sq
    2) My drain extends out into the garage - shower enclosure is on a base sitting on garage floor and tight - I'm assuming can't attach the drain until after installation?

      +Jeff Ribordy Wedi pans can be cut to size but there are limitations based on the instructions. You'd want to set the drain and drop the pan over it. So have all the plumbing in place if you don't have access underneath it. Hope that helps

    Going to use the Fundo Ligno as tub replacement (36x60"). The subfloor is 3/4" strand board, the Ligno is 3/4". When I put down a 1/4" wonder board/Wedi board won't that raise it up over the Ligno pan? or do you keep it that 1/4' high and bevel it down into pan with morter to make for of a run to the drain? I would not tile directly over 3/4 strand subfloor. Thanks and appreciate your video's.

    • @HomeRepairTutor

      +Jim Fiascone we'd recommend using DITRA as it's only 1/8" thick, allows you to completely waterproof the surrounding floor and stops tiles from cracking. In addition, add the Wedi Subliner over the pan and the DITRA for extra waterproofing. Wedi does have Subliner Flex which could be a solution for you as well. We have not used it though

I am remodeling my sisters bathroom and there is a handful of ppl who do that and allot of other people who don’t and I havent heard a complaint yet , personally if you red guard the entire shower base and walls , no problem ! A little extra cost but .. set it and forget it . Keep up the good work brah ( side note I have been in the construction business for 17 years ) allot of demos and in my opinion on tear outs IF the contractor took the time to seal the base properly I have seen no evidence to support that theory )

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pre-Slope helps water drain properly under the topping mix, stagnant water that doesn't drain will lead to mold and mildew from below.

    • @Carpenters_Canvas
      @Carpenters_Canvas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So if you take your time and seal the entire base and up the wall 2 feet with red guard water will still weep through ? I ask for evidence as respectful as I can , like all other good contractors if there is room for improvement which there always is , do it , it will save u the respect in your trade to not have to replace.

      @@Carpenters_Canvas honestly, we don't do this type of installation because new pre-sloped shower pans are much easier and faster. We like Schluter, Wedi, KBRS, and Laticrete systems. The only mud pan we do is for curbless basement showers. The money spent on pre-sloped shower bases is saved in time and materials fixing mistakes down the road. Just one opinion

I have called out other contractors who just mortared the tile to the advantec . He didn’t finish the job I tore it all out and restarted with the shluter system . Thank you for your time hopefully we can collaborate More in the future for the best results , there is no better feeling then walking away from a job proud and secure with your work. , is the wedi system pre sloped I couldn’t see it in the vid . Or actually u build the pan on top of this right ?

    I used Custom Bedding Mortar for a shower pan, but there is an area that now needs a little additional slope. What product can I use on top of the bedding mortar to feather in some additional slope? It's only about 3 sq ft on one side of the drain that needs about 1/2 inch of additional rise along the edge of the pan.
    Thank you.

    Can the pan be cut to size? My shower space is only 36 x 30. Or because the shower is flushed with the rest of the floor there is no need to cut it? My bathroom will be a wet room. The size of the shower will be determined by the back wall (48 inches and according to where I put my shower curtain rod which I am thinking a minimum of 30 inches from the back wall. I noticed that the smaller pan is 36 by 48.

    It's realy interesting why do we need to use this system?
    Is it cheaper than shower liner instalation wich gives you a complete waterproofing?
    In my opinion it's a way harder than a liner instalation because you don't neeed to play with the framing.

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Andrii Pasichnyk here's the problem with liners, they're not always installed properly and a lot of people puncture them either on purpose at the framing or by accident. Plus who's providing the 10 year warranty, the installer? Wedi is waterproof on the surface and as long as you don't puncture the entire way through the foam your shower is protected from accidental cuts from tools. This system is also a curbless shower, meaning the homeowner simply walks or rolls into the shower. So the liner is mostly used for curbed systems. That's a big difference

    I want to tear out a 36"x36" shower and replace it with a 48"x48". Existing shower pan is prefab fiberglass. Home is single-story on concrete slab.
    I'm hoping to:
    1) Remove existing shower pan
    2) Apply thin set to concrete slab so floor slopes to the drain
    3) Add perimeter curb
    4) Install tile
    Do I need a shower pan or barrier when installing shower on a concrete slab? Does water seep through tile grout and become a problem to the sub-surface?

      As a rule, tile and grout are not waterproof. A water barrier is needed before tiling. Otherwise, you're gtg.

    I’m getting ready to build a walk in shower on a new construction build for our house my question is do you always need to cut the sub floor out and make it 3/4 lower or is that only for remodels? What is the purpose behind doing this? Thanks in advance

    • @HomeRepairTutor
      @HomeRepairTutor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      it’s best to make the shower tray area 3/4” lower so that the shower tray is flush with the main floor; the Wedi Fundo Ligno is 3/4” thick at the perimeter. This allows you to have the Curbless entrance 👍🏼

    • @Trapaholic721

      What if we are going to do a curb should I still make it 3/4 of an inch lower?

    • @HomeRepairTutor

      in that case, you can bond a Fundo Primo directly to your concrete; if this is your first Wedi shower you can get a rep to come out on your install day. Highly recommend doing that
