  • Reza Aslan is an acclaimed religious scholar, the host of the CNN series Believer, and the author of books including Zealot, Beyond Fundamentalism, and No God but God. In his new book, Aslan focuses on the notion of a humanized god and traces how the idea has developed in diverse times and places. As Aslan shows, the conception of a deity as a super-human power has been a fundamental part of most societies from the hunter-gatherers to today's modern urban dwellers, and he explores how this common vision can help unite people of different faiths and cultures.
Aslan is in conversation with Michelle Boorstein, who is a religion reporter at the Washington Post, covering the busy marketplace of American faith.

Glad he comments on the madness that is the Prosperity Gospel! Thanks for the upload.
And I am definitely going to buy this book. I work with Sumerian material, and since that offers a glimpse into the formative periods of the religious impulse in human history, I am curious to see whether his stuff fits with the material we have available.

The massive support of Trump is representative of what you have said Reza, that being a Christian dream has nothing to do with Jesus.

He is talking about religion as a ark experience, what he means I think is faith, the ability to abstract reasoning, religion is a path of agreement, like the rules of a game you have to stick with if you want to play. Just because we worship something does not mean we have a religion. It's like knowing that true magic does not exist but we choose to live the illusion. Religion is the poison that those of faith need to get high and they are the victims of those that design the game as they will change the rules to their own needs and terms.

Thanks for uploading this great video. In my humble opinion, it is more appropriate to say: "Reza Aslan is an acclaimed scholar of religion" rather than "Reza Aslan is an acclaimed religious scholar".

I think being a more religious or less depend upon how environment at family was when a person was a kid. if parents are too religious and believe in a strength of particular religion and take as more powerful than other rather being a truly secular and not preaching kids on religious adherence, kids become naturally adhered to a particulate religion in most cases. I believe that is key reason that Islam is more fundamentalists than other religions because in other religions people have moved out mostly being highly religious but not in majority of Muslims families and including in countries where Muslims are in minority,--forget about where they are in majority. Even Reza Aslan mind set is also outcomes of that he can pose very liberal though.

Reza's explanation about the white evangelicals undying support of trump, the prosperity gospel view on him, really opened my eyes. I've been trying to understand it, but haven't heard it anywhere. Finally!!!
Now I even have a lower opinion about the prosperity gospel followers.

Being agnostic does not mean you don't "care". Is that what he said?
Also, I don't like the way he phrased the part about Jesus as a humanised form of God, cause it sounded as if Jesus was equal to God, while Jesus is more of a god's mouthpiece. Sure, you can argue that ultimately by representing God he's a humanised version of God, but it's not exactly the same thing.
Anyway the talk was very interesting in general

Science is the most likely wrench thrown into the evolutionary machine, not religion as Reza seems to be citing. With the efficiency of natural selection, it’s unlikely something as ubiquitous as religion was always a useless side effect. I haven’t read Reza’s consensus of evolutionary biology, but I have read theories that natural selection benefitted grouping as the best means to perpetuate our species. Blind loyalty to an alpha helped reinforce group unity. Religious rites would’ve provided an even better chance at survival by lending omnipotence (an air of certainty through confirmation bias) to the alpha and group ideals ensuring stronger cohesion, less chance of mutiny, less stagnation by consensus, survivability against threats or inciting survival-of-the-fittest to dehumanize other groups. In small hunter/gatherer groups w/ scarce resources and less survivability, it makes sense. In a world where science has enabled much larger populations and supplanted the need for credulous grouping as as the best means of perpetuation, it's now like a bored puppy home alone. So, this makes science the wrench, but not in a bad way. It's allowed us to contrast the immorality in being left to our evolutionary devices. Under this hierarchy, allegiance to Trump by evangelical whitey isn't as contradictory as it seems. It's more confused because it's a mix of secular ideology and Christianity. Muslims have fared far worse since their expression of that disposition ended the golden age a millennium ago. Evangelical Christian Trump supporters should take note and realize, they are the barbarians inside the gate.

Trump bashing has reached new lows. Is this the only focus? To exalt anything conservative and uphold belief systems that have been in direct opposition to the views that make this country even remotely great. Using words like "assholery" dont make the other side wrong.

    • @dukebanerjee4710
      @dukebanerjee4710 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

What does exalting conservatism or upholding the belief system that makes America great have anything to do with Trump?
Trump isn't a conservative, he is a far right reactionary. He doesn't represent America's greatness or greatness of anybody in general. He is a living embodiment of the seven deadly sins.
To Reza's point, Evangelicals should be bashing Trump, but white Evangelicals totally flipped on what they consider acceptable behavior from politicians.

His reasoning is presented with stunning calmness but equally stunning shallow conclusions. He never mentioned that many Evangelicals voted for Trump not because he was believed to be Christian or even trusted. He was simply going to represent policies that we thought were more Christian than his opponent. Who he never acknowledges was so reviled, that she was lower than Trump on a likability scale even outside of religious circles. He ideas on projecting ourselves and putting our ideas on our face of God show a fundamental misunderstanding of Christianity and does not respect the teachings of most religions that have explained God and his actions, Goals and attributes long before, we formed those for ourself. In the argument of which came first the chicken or the egg, he gets it wrong. These attributes/judgements were not ours that we placed on our version of God, We believe they came from God then we placed them on ourselves. Everything he says is based on his opinion and interpretation with no reliable basis in human history or recent practices of society. Arrogance reigns to draw these conclusions based on his limited experience, relative to world changing religions. How unfortunate to think oneself wise , when your words show the opposite.

Douglas Williams "trumps policies were thought to be more christian than.his opponents" i am from the UK but it was obvious his policies had nothing to do with helping the poor, the sick and the disabled ot turning the other cheek let alone helping the stranger. If Hilaries policies were worse than this the USA really has a problem

I truly feel sorry for Reza. He is completely lost. After hearing his understanding of who God is really sad. He is clearly disturbed and deeply conflicted. Adding to his bondage line of thinking; his poor children now are apart of his conflicted, disturbing teachings. Sad, just so very sad..
