    I was eight at this time, and I went to see Alvin and the Chipmunks with my mom, and I loved it. Yes, it's an assembly line cartoon, but it gave me love for music that came before me and helped open my artistic mind. Not a good movie, but an important one for me, so I love it.

    I went to a screening of "Ishtar" in January 2013 with Elaine May and Paul Williams as guests and Paul said it was really tough to write such bad songs!!! LOL

    Ishtar seemed like a project of Vanity and delusions of grandeur by Beatty and Hoffman. Just 2 legends thinking yh lets just take the piss. MONSTROSITY.

    I can admit that the Chipmunks' and Chippette's voices are annoying in The Chipmunk Adventure. The 80s cartoons are okay (although I kinda grew out of them), but the movies (especially the Chipmunk Adventure) grate on my ears everytime I even think about them. In comparison, Chip and Dale (a much better and more lovable pair of chipmunks) are not annoying with their voices, even when they sing.

    I actually really liked Beverly Hills Cop II . Cop 1 is funnier but Cop II is a better action film . Regardless of the critical reviews it was the biggest film of summer of '87

    I might be the only person who noticed this, but Ebert said that Ishtar was going to make their list for "the worst 10 movies of the year (1987)". But when you watch the worst of 1987 list, you notice that there is only 8 movies on that list.

    Ishtar could've worked if Hoffman and Beatty had switched parts. Hoffman can be funny, as he was in Tootsie. I'd like to have seen the energy he brought to that movie in Ishtar, with him playing Beatty's part. And of course Beatty is a terrific actor, everyone knows that. He could've played Hoffman's part just reacting to the craziness going on around him. That's how you do a buddy picture. I didn't think Ishtar was all that bad, it just doesn't land. It's all setups without payoffs. They could've used a good script doctor.

    • @thorpeenith3436
      @thorpeenith3436 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I loved how Hoffman and Beatty played roles that defied expectations, funny to see Beatty all insecure and oblivious of his natural good looks, and hilarious to see Hoffman's quixotic, misplaced self-confidence. I found their chemistry and crappy songs hilarious, but then the movie lost me with the dumb endless action stuff.

    Ishtar is not the worst movie ever. It’s not a great movie. It’s not even a good movie. It certainly doesn’t achieve what it set out to do. But it doesn’t deserve its reputation. That must’ve been from all the press at the time from its troubled (to say the least) production. It should’ve flopped, then been quietly forgotten as a great number of movies are.

    It's kinda surprising to think that Ebert gives 1 star to Beverly Hills Cop II in his written review back in 1987 and yet 10 years later in 1997, he gives 2 stars to Batman & Robin in his written review.

    Notice how inconsistent the animation is in those Chipmunk Adventure clips. One looks like a smooth 24fps. Another is roughly half that frame rate.

      I doubt any of the film was at 24fps. Disney would animate each frame but most animation is every other frame and in japan its every 3rd frame as the standard. I would suspect that it shifts from 2 to 3 based on budget and time constraints

    I saw Amazing Grace and Chuck when i was a freshman in college, and i HATED IT! I was probably too harsh in my judgment at the time because I couldn't get past how silly and unrealistic the story was, or how awful and amateurish the actor was who played Chuck. Someday I hope to be able to give the movie another chance

    Ishtar. They wanted to make an old style Bob Hope/Bing Crosby type Road picture, but it wasn't funny, Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty had no chemistry whatsoever, and what the heck was the plot all about anyway? Yeah, no one cared about the plot in the Road pictures, but no one went to a Road picture for the plot. They went for comedy. Ishtar fails on both. What a sad final director credit for Elaine May. She was capable of so much better.
