  • Bass are spawning around the country and every boat on the lake has a white jig tied on. Guys are prowling the shallows in search of big bed fish and really, who can blame them? This is a great time of year to catch a giant bass, the issue is that most anglers are going about it completely wrong. If you get frustrated when bed fishing season comes, this video is for you!
Fishing for spawning bass is a hot button issue. We're not jumping into the debate today, instead we're encouraging anglers to do it properly. We want you to have the tools you need to be successful, and the knowledge to know how to treat the fish properly when you catch them. The list of mistakes anglers make when targeting spawning bass is endless! Today we're only covering the top 5 and its still a full-length video.
From choosing the right lense color for your glasses, to boat positioning, to subtle colors that get more bites, we've got you covered. Below you'll find links to all of the gear Matt discussed in the video. We've included the exact colors, weights, etc, to help you make the best decision possible. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Great info! As always. For you guys who don’t agree with bed fishing. Tacticalbassin has other videos that show how the fish go right back to the bed after caught. That’s why Matt emphasized turning them loose close and quick. If it wasn’t right, Matt & Tim wouldn’t do it.

I noticed the bandaid back on your cheek, hope all is well with your skin issues. Also, had no idea the new moon passed. Thats wild you predicted that. 2 days ago when the new moon phase passed is when ALL of the big bass around here started moving shallow and i was catching tons of fish, couldnt really figure out what triggered them. They were active even after a horrible cold front that dropped the water temps down 12 degrees overnight; I live a good distance north of you guys too. Thats wack, i used to never really buy into the whole moon phase thing, but i might need to pay more attention now.

As a tournament guy I have club tournaments during the spawn and I really hate taking these fish off the bed but the money invested is tremendous. I'm torn between what to do but I do try to take the big ones back to the area I caught them after weigh in. I just wonder if the stress of being weighed in makes them just dump eggs and leave.

Been watching the channel for a couple years, bass fishing has been so much more enjoyable, really appreciate the one on one feel, like I have two awesome guides tutoring me. I’m from Canada, not on the same level as Tim and Matt(on a good year I would be happy to catch one 5 pounder). Still don’t catch a lot of five pounders but hit seven pounds on sm last year and the year before. I no longer consider 5 pounders picture worthy and just toss them back in as if they were dinks. Goal is a 9 pounder, lake simcoe has them and I want them. Your show should be on tv.

I thought who would put shades on right now? But I did amber is legit. Matt is right, the bottom just came out of no where. Cut the glare and brighten my day up! I'm glad to know I made the correct decision while trying to catch a fish on the bed. I of course was using a white creature bait but could never get the fish to eat the whole thing so there was a lot of pulling and stretching because the fish only had the non-hook end of the bait. I switch to a 2/0 circle hook and wacky-rigged a TRD and on the 2nd attempt, I caught the fish. Couldn't have done that without an exposed hook.

Appreciate the skin caner awareness and prevention advice. One common skin cancer location is the feet which is often overlooked. Bob Marley died of melanoma that originated in his toe. While fishing in sandals feels great, so too does fishing in shorts and a T-shirt. So if we're going to protect ourselves from skin cancer, we should also consider the feet and keep them covered.

Its hard to slow down after the prespawn. Sometimes skip spawning all together and let them bass do their thing and I will see them again in post spawn 👿

Great video.. I Grew up in Pennsylvania, its illegal to fish for bass from April 14-June 1 during the spawn. I'm definitely against bed fishing , especially in tournaments where the fish are taken away, that doesn't make sense. Thanks for stressing that point.

Bed fishing is illegal here in Pennsylvania, and I’m not too upset about it. I get that there’s a great chance at catching monster bass during the spawn, but it almost feels like cheating to me - kind of like shooting a turkey out of its roost. I respect those who choose to bed fish and do it as ethically as possible, but I’d rather leave them alone to spawn, then catch them once they move back deep.

@@aidanconley3162 fully agree this day in age people know better too . Get a plastic mount . And set them free god knows you’re ripping the next state record for the water. I’m 44 caught plenty of bass over 5 biggest was 6/9 oz when I was 18 they don’t get much bigger here in Rhode Island . And I knew that then .

Question 🙋‍♂️: why do some of my rod tip guides have indentations on it ? The inside of the tip of my guides are no longer smooth. Why does this happen ? I’ve only had some of these rods 7-9 months. The rods I use are spinning rods that run from $ 35-45.
