The MR2 Is Back! Gen 5 Swap/ My TCS Motorsports Experience... Good or Bad?!

The MR2 is back from TCSMotorsports with its fresh Gen 5 3SGTE swap! I made this video explaining how the process went for me with hopes that it may help some of you have a general idea of what to expect. I don’t want to come off like I’m being rude by any means since so far the car seems to be running fine and the work was done right. Just want to shed some light on a particular area that I was dissatisfied with. I ended up using www.nightrungarage.com for my gen 4 swap. Nothing but positive things to say about Chris Larson and his communication is top notch. Hope you enjoy your swap, the car is a different beast with the upgraded motor and technology.

I sold the car not long after these videos so I won’t be much help. I understand the owner (Ty) had some personal life issues at that time, so I do hope that the response rate has gotten better than only responding when involving money. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Damn that’s disappointing... I’m doing the same gen swap. I’m no where near the costs so looks like I’ll be doing my swap on my own. Have the motor with forged parts. Super stoked. About $3,000 to go and she will be in. Sorry about your luck I’ll steer clear from TCS.

I wouldn’t steer clear from them at all! They did an amazing job and the car turned out top notch it was just communication was lacking a bit. As soon as I get another mr2 I will most likely bring it to them to get another swap!

I'm in the uk so my opinion is kind of irrelevant but i would be fed up too with that sort of treatment for the amount of money you are throwing their way. I've read similar things about tcs on various facebook pages. Hit and miss.

That’s crazy man. Tcs is well known and the fact that was your experience is really terrible. I thought about using them for my future swap but I’m telling right now I would have blasted them on social media for that. The would have answered my damn calls ans emails. I don’t play that run around shit. I feel like Ty just looks at this like heads of cattle and like you mentioned unless big money is involved, he didn’t seem to care. That’s not good. Thank you for being up front and sharing your experience. The community that funds places like this needs to be aware.

Yeah and I knew he would respond if I talked about money so sometimes I would bait a response by mentioning payment first. I wasn’t hard to deal with. I didn’t message him multiple times a day or even multiple times a week. Maybe once a week or once every two weeks. I didn’t struggle to pay him or anything. It was annoying too that he didn’t really make it possible to see me either. I had to have a friend pick up the car (granted it was later at night) but the day I could get there (a Saturday) I wanted him to be there just for me to do a quick test drive and verify everything was good before I left, which he couldn’t. I get it, it’s Saturday but still. If you’re running a business and I’m driving like 600-700 miles to pick my car up, then you can drive down the street to meet a customer that paid you a lot of money. Just kind of shitty. Now that I think of it, I wouldn’t use him again... I said I would but I wouldn’t. I would go with Sanders Motorsports in atlanta.

Do you think I could put a gen 5 3sgte engine in my stock 1991 mr2 5sfe? I’m in California :(. I don’t know if it will pass smog or if it’s legal.

That would be something to check with your local laws about but it is possible. You need a few extra things including an E153 transmission but it is 100% possible

I also live in Cali and there are a few things make it harder do the swap and smog it legally but there are a few shops around here that do specialize in mr2 swaps and will do it for you
