Thank you Rahdo for this runthrough. Once again you've influenced my purchasing by showing me that this game is not for me.

Wow, great video. My wife and I definitely misread how to score a few of those cards. For some reason I read it as 4 green in a stack would score the card with a green circle around the 4. Makes far more sense this way. We also butchered the one where one color is surrounded by other colors. Thanks!!

Love the art but the Fisher Price pieces...

yes, I've been struggling for some time to put into words what my problem with the pieces is and 'Fisher Price' sums it up perfectly. I love the concept but can't bear the pieces. Perhaps they'll do a 'Golem edition' and revamp it somehow :) Here's hoping.

They always have... A Plan B.... so It's quite possible! I'm also not really a fan of having to fetch a bunch of point tokens, again and again...

Personnally, I love those plastic pieces. They are big, colourful and different in shape. They give a pretty picture on the table.

yup, they are excellent. i guess with my straight overhead view camera, they[re not being shown in the best light... seen from the side as you sit at the table, the reef is very charming and lovely to see build up, thanks to these pieces.

I don't understand how this is an abstract game. It's about coral reefs and the pieces look like coral and the build on top of each other like they do in real life. They are not cubes or representative pieces that are pushed up on a chart. There is very little absraction there literal interpretation of the natural activity.
Similarly Azul is not abstract. You need to build a tiled surface and you literally build a tiled surface. Games like go and draughts and chess are abstract because the pieces represent concepts, formations and supply lines and manouvours which are represented figuratively or conceptually.

    • @rahdo

you raise a fair point, but to me a game is still abstract if there's no explainable roll that i play in the proceedings, and the game offers no explanation of who we are in the simulation, what our goals are, and why we face the restrictions presented by the design. the world isn't abstract here, but we are, and hence to me, it's still an abstracted game experience. in fact, to me, it's more abstract than chess because of this.

    • @DanielHCassidy

Interesting point about the point of view of the player. Are we godlike manipulating coral by will or as you say in the video if the game mentioned we were scientist cultivating coral and artificially populating a reef. If the latter then there would be almost zero abstraction

@@DanielHCassidy Reef is abstract because the coral doesn't grow and spread like anything resembling nature. You simply pick where you want the pieces to go. It's basically just a color matching game. If you remove the pasted on theme and just use colored chips, it's the same game. The same goes for Azul. The rules for placing the tiles have nothing to do with how tiles would actually be placed on a wall. I'd call both abstracts shoehorned into themes for artistic purposes. I also don't consider abstracts to be inferior to any other type of game. It seems like some people use 'abstract' to mean 'less than' when describing games. To me, if a game is good, it's good.

shanerion I disagree. I game can be “puzzly” without being abstract. For example, Mage Knight presents a puzzle with its mechanics and is therefore a “puzzly” game, yet I would hardly consider it abstract. It is anything but - because it is very thematic - fantasy themed.

@@shanerion Ok, then let's review your last post.
Quote: "You’re missing what people mean by abstract here. By that logic you could say that even Chess is not an abstract game, because the pieces are like military units, and pawns would be up front, and mounted units would be more mobile, etc."
Response: Maybe this is what you were trying to say in responding to punk0 - I cannot read the tone of the message, but chess IS an abstract game BECAUSE it has no theme mechanically. Just because the pieces are SUPPOSED to represent something: that is kind of the point. They are SUPPOSED to represent an entity, but so do MANY other abstract entities in nature. That is kind of what abstraction is. For example, take abstract algebra - which is the study of several algebraic structures like: groups, rings, fields, modules, vector spaces, lattices, and algebras. These structures are ABSTRACT (obviously) and so they could apply to many different things/areas.
Quote: "Abstract means that the game is a puzzle, essentially. Chess has a war theme, Azul has a Portugal and construction theme, reef has a ... reef theme, but abstract isn’t really referring to theme, it’s referring to the purely puzzly nature of a game."
Response: What evidence do you have that abstract = puzzly? Do you have a list of every abstract game in the history of gaming which you can check whether it has puzzly mechanics? I think this is your opinion. As discussed above abstract refers to the fact that the pieces can represent anything and are abstracted out. It is a game in which the theme has no importance to the gameplay itself.

@@GusG_yup, 7.1 is a fantastic rating on bgg. that puts it in the top 700 games of all time out of a database of 15 thousand games or so, so yeah, i'll stand by that :)
