I do recommend Dvoretky's book: Maneuvering: The Art of Piece Play. Extremely hard for me, but soooo rewarding, I got better real fast on quiet positions.
1. h5 h6 2. gxh4+ kh7 3. hxg6+ fxg6 ... at this point white is out of checks and two pawns have been exchanged, and this is a drawing position. black does not have to take the h pawn after h5, that would be a blunder and yes, mate in one.
At first I thought that work, but black has counter play with Bishop D3+. From there 3 variations. 1. King A1 ends in a draw by three reps if black plays it correctly. (Knight B3+, Pawn xB3), (Rook C1+, king A2), (bishop B1+, king A1), from there black can remove the bishop for discovered check and then put the bishop back to B1 to force a draw by three fold rep. 2. King C1 ends in mate for black. Knight B3 double check, King D1, Rook C1 checkmate. 3. White takes Bishop on D3, black takes h5 pawn. White loses its mate set up due to the Knight being on D3 and not being able to protect a mating pattern. In short, GM Maurice's mate in 4 is the only play that works 100% of the time as it forces black to move. However, I'm pretty sure most players playing as black will not see a way out of pushing the pawn up, so that will probably work most of the time, but of course mate in 4 is the stronger move.
Maurice Ashley, the Morpheus we all needed. The King of Ideas.
I'll get a Gangsta chess cap when local chess club opens up again!
thank you , great training , we need something from middle game positions where we don't know what to do, not forcing moves!!
