    Finally our newly rebuilt main engine is ready to go on the DYNO! We even had the opportunity to test it on vegetable oil!
    Have a look and see how it went... we were able to measure things like fuel burn rates at cruise and full power for both fuels as well as all engine parameters like exhaust gas temp, horsepower, torque etc. Dame and Duncan were very responsible playing with the big engine, making the big engine noises, although Damien just realised he never touched the throttle once. This is the motor generously funded by our go-fund-me and patreons that we will be craned into Brupeg in the next month (all going according to plan)! Thank you everyone who donated and made this possible!

    My 7.3 powerstroke that ran over 100,000 miles on straight veg had a coolant loop in the tank to maintain veg oil temp in the veg tank. Also a custom coolant jacketed fuel filter as well as insulated veg lines. Started on diesel, switched at 160 F degrees. Switched back to diesel before shutdown.

      Jon that sounds almost identical to the system we are designing. Issue we have is our coolant only gets to 78c at cruise and 82c at full throttle. We need to lift the oil another 20c on top of that so we are thinking about exhaust heat or lube oil heat scavenging to bump it up high enough

      Yes, true that a diesel in a truck creates more heat with acceleration where as a constant speed diesel like boat and heavy equipment engines might not.
      I met a lot of veggie drivers at an event we held annually called Greasestock. There were some that used supplemental inline electric heaters and one guy that used exhaust gasses to capture heat. Love the channel btw.

      @@ProjectBrupeg Arctic weather heat exchanger. They look like a muffler, but they're a stainless steel plate sandwiched between two "boxes". On one side you have exhaust gasses, on the other you have the fuel. I've no clue who makes them, i know they exist because i was talking with our expedition mechanic, being curious about what exactly do they do to their trucks in such weather so the fuel doesn't reach the engine cold.

      Running on diesel before shutting down sounds like a good idea, otherwise the veg oil may gum up the injectors .

    The ice cream guy in my neighbourhood [Yorkshire, north of England] runs his van on recycled cooking oil. It's quite confusing: his bing-bong🎵chimes say "Ice cream!", but his van's exhaust says, "Fish and chips!" 😁

    Nothing like running veg oil and the feeling its awesome to stick the finger up at the RIP OFF service stations on the way past running free veg oil and it feels better in the engine.
    I ran my 1HZ Toyota Coaster engine on veg oil, did the Murray Darling river system Australia last year, 3000 kilometer trip on the first go on 100% SVO, twin tank, filtered 20,10 micron. It had two heat exchangers in vehicle a 60 plate coolant heat exchange and a another one right before the IP. Heated boiled the oil over night in a drum campfire (it got REAL hot) from fish chip shops before filtering and putting in vehicle tank, started on cold svo stopped cold veg oil (this was probably a big mistake). I though oh it ran so good it doesn't need to start on diesel and stop on diesel.
    After the 3000 kilometer trip the brand new injection pump was filled with brown rusty looking sticky stuff, anything the stuff touched that was steel or metal was like that esp in the steel original tank, the other plastic tank was good and clean, plastic for everything is the go or stainless steel, the vain pump was that stuck with it, the vain wouldn't come out so it wasn't pumping any more veg oil up. I broke down roadside and didn't go again. Took the pump off and rebuilt it myself and it running again on diesel as of now. Nightmare.
    Everything ran perfect for miles and miles on end until last few weeks it started to get rough. It seems all good but it slowly builds up junk in the injector pump and the injector tips were stuffed. Caked with black crap. It ran clear in the exhaust clear as a bell from 1 second after starting with a little puff black smoke to enitially start.
    I see you're setting up a vacuum pump old LPG filtering system and i watched the video and I'm currently building one (small scale) out of a LPG 45KG big bottle system as i was looking for answers how i can fix this situation. You may be eliminating the possible problems i had by doing this!!! Getting the Dissolved Water, Emulsified Water and the Free Water completely out is critical imo.
    Couple of things i learned and rules I'm putting in place for myself to always follow:
    1). Heat oil 80-100C and cycle and filter in a 44 gallon drum and fanning the air to atmosphere and have a air fan blow it and filter to 1 micron a few times not just once. Maybe go through the filter cycling when its cooler to as too hot ruins filters. Cycle it as its cooling below 80C.
    2). Put the oil in a vacuum and dehydrate water out. Just heating boiling does not get it all out.
    2). Always do the basic crackle pan test oil before going in tank.
    3). Always start on diesel get well hot and purge well on diesel.
    Will be interesting to see a video of the running filtration system you eventually settle into place. Its hard travelling as the stuff gets stirred up all the time in 44 gallon drums. I will probably to process 44 gallon drums on land at camp sites when stopping a few days to a week and using camp fires to heat and process the oil. Its easier if at home just settle the stuff for years in IBC 100 ltr containers and have heap of em and this is the stories you often hear most of ppl doing it.
    All the best thanks for the detailed video. The LPG design I've come up with will screw into any top 3/4" female fitting in the top of existing old LPG tanks and no welding or cutting into the existing tank and use a dairy vacuum or might use a old AC system yet still building it as i post. I will have a video on it on my channel when its finished and running.
    Look up Oil Burner TH-cam channel he has a good system worked out and simple and old school. I'm currently building the old small block chevy pump as as wvo pump as, one, it will handle volumes and two can handle the heat and constant RPM to move oil solid all day long and does cost a fortune.

    Enjoyed the engine testing on the Dino. What was interesting was when you and Duncan were at his house, I noticed the background brickwork which was so well done with a scratch joint. The bed and head joints were so uniform to the point of screaming that the person who laid those bricks was a master craftsman. It seems the Aussies have master craftsmen on the mechanical, electrical and masonry side. What a country and then you have wonderful people like Jess and Damon who are spot on nice and great and interesting and funny and so on and so on ( ok I know I used to many ands but hey, I’m a former bricklayer ). This is such an amazing channel - Jess and Damon have some of the best friends in the world ( well all over the world ).

    There is a reason that you were able to rebuild an engine like that after all the years it has ran, it says alot about the quality and longevity of a new engine, some people learn the hard way some people don't, a lot is based on how well you acquire decision making skills throughout your life, me ! im just stupid see, for 4 k more i would have bought the new engine with a reputable company like that, engine sounds pretty good 👌

    I can't believe the effort some put into restoring boats, this project is so mammoth just thinking about it does my head in. You must be in the less than 1% of humanity, because the effort is so immense mere mortals like me cannot even begin to comprehend it.     There is a guy in Canada, who has a 4-53 GM custom fitted to a Ford F-350. He is running veg oil, and found that water/methanol injection keeps carbon from clogging his injector nozzles and piston rings. I ran the NTC-855 Cummins in road trains during the 1980's and 1990's..........the Formula 350 is the best. Keep the revs at or below 1800rpm.......they dont like high revs. ALWAYS keep Cummins DCA or pre mix coolant in the cooling system otherwise electrolysis will eat the liners out. The NTC-855 can be very reliable, provided it gets a quality rebuild.........line bore the block,new head bolts,mains bolts, conrod bolts.......no short cuts. The CPL also denotes the fuel pump setup. The NTC-855 had a small cam version and a "Big Cam" version, the latter being better (less cam wear). Turbo's have improved enormously since the Big Cam "4" came out in mid 1980's. Ceramic coated exhaust manifolds and turbine blankets also make a difference to turbo spool and efficiency. Really interesting info you have on veg oil temp and performance relationship. Thanks ))

    Damien you and Miss Jess are a funny set of Kiwis. You use the metric system for everything but that Cummings engine. It's a 14 liter engine. 😅😅😅😊
    And the US Military has been running engines on all kinds of oil for years. Diesel , motor oil and many more. 😊 Kathryn and I gave to the gofundme using PayPal. Glad to see it running strong on the test/dyno stand. I have one of my Cummings liner converted into a small forge.😊

    Look into using a heat exchanger line between the oil tank and engine block with the hot coolant out line jacketing the oil feed to the injectors. I've see the veg oil guys in colder climates use them with good results. Also, a stainless electric heating element and a PID controller would help heat up quicker and maintain optimal oil tank temps.

      @@thatdave86 Since its going in a boat I don't think the gear oil will have a need to be cooled. without enough excess heat it wont be able to heat the veg oil up to the necessary temp to fuel the engine cleanly.

    It’s episodes like this I come to view. Great info. My brother was a diesel fitter on the Sunshine Coast who excelled at engine rebuilds. Sadly Stan is no longer with us and this episode bought back many happy memories of hanging around Stan in his workshop watching him and his vast knowledge of all things. Your guy reminded me very much of Stan. Thanks. 👍❤. PS called into Bundy back in January to check out the yard. Saw you at work. Didn’t need to bother you. Just happy to have been there.

    Water brake. It uses the water in shear to apply load to the engine. The water shearing is what generates the heat.

    There is no doubt karl knows these engines. The turbo is a apart of the cpl list of performance parts, a garret turbo on a cummins is not keeping with the cpl listing, I'm glad it was changed.
    As far as a new engine v the rebuild, the issue you have is that cpl 700 is non certified where as the new NTA is IMO 2.
    Your old engine was a CAT So you are repowering. If this vessel is going to be registered under AMSA then you are going to have to meet IMO rules. The rules state that other than an identical like for like replacement, you need to install an IMO tier 2 engine.
    Even pleasure boats now have to meet these rules. Hope you get around this as karl has done an excellent job. The testing with the different fuel was very interesting and quite well done.

    20 odd years ago we used to run my wife's old manual pump Volkswagen on veggie oil (whichever was cheapest) straight from the supermarket, sometimes 100% veggie sometimes mixed with whatever diesel was in the tank, never had a problem other than the smell. So many people were doing this that at one point there was a 4 litre/person limit at the supermarket.

    You can install a oil heater on the vg oil line as close as possible of the engine fuel injection pump. That will keep the oil temp at the optimum value all the time and will allow to a faster transition from diesel to vg. Keep up the good work...

    I remember back to my first sight of the Brupeg engine room and being quite impressed by the appearance of the freshly painted Cummins. That was before I saw the new engine in the all - together! Quite an erotic spectacle eh what chaps?!🙃 In short, I think that beautiful lump of raw materials is just fantastic the way it is! I would like for us to have some kind of poll of the rank and file about the pros vs cons of painting the donk! Of course there's always the option of a spot of chrome plating here and there! 🤗

    Damian that has a wonderful lope at Idle and in all it sounds great .I'm a diesel engine technician and have worked on Cummings over 35yrs as well other manufacturers. Cummings run low oil pressure but high volume I believe you need use a different oil supply pump operated by auxiliary device to maintain oil pressure and volume to internals, 1000 rpm is not enough rpm to reach full oil pressure and volume, especially when it is working under load. When oil get warm pressure drops also.I was just thinking this is not a piece of equipment on land and you guy's are very smart ,I don't know anything about building a boat or navigation but one can say I know a thing or two about engines.

    And that's the difference between a damn good mechanic and an engine manufacturer.
    So the word you are looking for when describing the exhaust is "opacity". When the check us for emissions ghey actually hold a chart up to our trucks pipe that has gray scales on it and depending on how much smoke or "opacity" tells them if we are fit for environmental emissions.
    I sure love the sound of a sweet diesel engine. That last clip just reminds me of a diesel locomotive. I love my Cats but a Cummins or a Detroit is music to my ears. Oh and u can't forget my soft spot for the old Gardner that hot us out to sea and back on the fish boats. I think I've spent more than half of my soon to be 60 years listening to a diesel between fish boats, semi's and farm tractors.

    Another thing about diesel engines that might be a bit surprising to petrol heads (including meself) is how RPM, throttle and torque is related in petrol vs diesel.
    In a petrol (or any other combustion fuel) engine you always target a very specific stoichiometry, so the power you can get out of the engine is directly proportional to the volume of air you stuff into it, which again more or less means RPM (with the slight variation of the turbo), and you can't just increase the boost/compression since then the fuel will pre-detonate/ignite (=quick way to have an unscheduled disassembly of your engine), so to get more power => put in more air, and a given RPM results in a (semi) fixed power/torque. This is why they have (or used to have) throttle body that restricts the air flow.
    In a diesel, not only do you have a range of fuel/air mix that will work (though it still has an optimal one - which is basically what they're discussing with the clean smoke etc), but since you're detonating the fuel anyway by squirting it into the cylinder when you want it to detonate, you can just shovel as much air as as you want into the cylinders (withing reason of course), which means you can produce a range of output power at a single RPM. So to adjust power, you adjust the amount of fuel you burn.
    When you realize this, you suddenly get a better understanding for why (or one of the reasons why) diesels are more efficient, and much easier to work with in an industrial setting.

    I have been waiting for this moment, and it did not disappoint, that was excellent, I had a big smile on my face at the outtrow, being an armchair mechanic for decades, and with the highest qualifications known to man, (awarded by myself ) I was trying to find a way to encourage you to put a bigger or more efficient turbo without getting to much ridicule for saying so, when low-and-behold, it was done and it was a success, I am freaking brilliant, lol well done in getting to this stage, I'm made up for you both.

      When Dr. Rudolf Diesel designed his first engine in the 1880s, it was designed and originally run on vegetable oil.

    Might I suggest some electrical trace heating tape wrapped around the veggie oil supply and return lines? It won't heat up the oil to a higher temp, but it will reduce the system losses to a point where it's no longer a problem.
    This is a very common solution in commercial burners when they are using a heavy oil for combustion, the return line is always the most important, especially at max chat, because the return line won't be flowing as much. Heavier oils can easily start to solidify if not above 80 odd degrees........ we sometimes have to heat it to around 130 degrees and atomise it with steam to really get it going.......

    Was very surprised at the fuel efficiency using canola. Was expecting as much as a 50% higher burn rate compared to diesel. Carl did an exceptional job on the rebuild.

    Where a cummins of this generation was super superior was cost of fuel injectors and fuel pump.........a fraction the cost of anything else. Heating value of Canola oil and Diesel are very similar, but your fuel consumption results are 20% more for Canola....... Its a common issue that different fuels have different combustion burn speed, it might need timing advanced. To do that on a Cummins, the camshaft side cover plates can have their gasket shims changed. It was a really pleasant blast from the past to hear an NTC-855 pulling on that dyno )) My dad, has a 7 liter, 6 cylinder Volvo diesel in his F7 truck (RV) .......by replacing the original first generation Garret T-04B turbo with a Holset H351C..........boost went from 14psi to 20 psi and its vastly better to drive in terms of performance, and cruises more easily. Diesels love boost.

      Thanks Craig, yeah is was a real thing of beauty. Your spot on about it’s smoothness. Also small things like blow by. Spec allows for up to 18 inches but because Carl uses four ring pistons and not the newer three this engine has 1 inch of blow by so fumes etc in the engine room are also much easier to manage. It’s really a stunning engine

    If you ran a hot antifreeze line through your fuel tanks for the veggie oil that should help warm up the oil. And canola oil is over $9 per gallon here in the USA and diesel fuel is $5 per gallon for ultra low sulfer fuels

    That fuel economy is pretty good compared to a gasoline powered outboard. A 350hp mercury verado uses about 110l/h on best cruise and 235l/h on WOT. Of course the speed would be 'slightly' different, but those numbers really surprised me.

    With this smooth running engine and the right engine mounts. The vibration will be minimal. Makes for a enjoyable experience on board. Being on a boat that shakes like dog in the rain is not fun.
    I take it you will use the engine coolant for heating the veggie oil optional temperature with a solenoid when under way.
    Ps. I take it the engine will be painted off white. Making it easy to spot oil leaks etc.
    Thats going to a great party when she gets her engine installed.

    I hope you realise that the BBQ cooks in every backyard in Australia will now be temp testing the oil before it goes on to the bbq plate.This process will now be called "The Brupeg Effect" to reduce smoke while burning the "snags" No more pouring warm beer on the plate to cool it down. Chris

    you will probably cut a good third to half of the turbo scream with a proper bellmouth shaped trumpet on the inlet side of that turbo charger

    Some lagging/insulation on the veg lines and tank would reduce energy loss, as Jon mentioned,
    it would also decrease the risk of burning yourself in the engine room, safety first.

    cool to see the engine in action, great that the veggie oil is going to work out awesome how clean it burns much rather sail around in a boat that smells like a chip shop than a diesel mechanics shop lol problem is the crew will be starving for munchies constantly lol used to work at a shop that was between a jam factory and a bread factory every day on the way to work could smell both always made me hungry lol stock lots of munchies is my advise lol

    The best way to run vegetable oil in a diesel engine is to use a proper heat exchanger that is thermostatically controlled, I usually build my own heat exchangers. I have used the allison transmissions heat exchangers for vegetable oil and they work really well. The allison heat exchanger has oil in and oil out and water in and water out. On non marine engines I make a heat exchanger that goes inline in the exhaust and the oil is heated right before it goes in the engine. For startups you can blend diesel with vegetable oil and switch to full vegetable oil when up to operating temperature.

    I ran my workshop heater on veg, had an urn set to about 120 deg, encountered the same issue as you , so had to a..dd a heater block just prior to the burner to heat it. youll have to do the same pre-pump

    When I was operating earth works machinery the company I was working for bought a new D6 swampy dozer from Japan I think it was from. It was filled with some kind of vegetable oil and the smell of the oil from the exhaust made me hungry all day whilst I burned the tank full up

    The diesel engine was designed to run on palm oil in the 1800's by a guy called Von Diesel and will run on any veggie oil, in the UK all diesel engines have had to be able to run on veggie oils or bio diesel since 1997, In the Philippines i run my diesels on old filtered cooking oil.
