In it Thiel explains his theories on markets, monopolies, and the lack of new technology. Born in Germany, raised in California, Thiel is a US-ranked chess master and cofounder of PayPal and Palantir.

The host Peter Robinson is quite a sharp thinker as well, many other hosts would just look like somewhat ignorant besides Peter Thiel.
There is an other element with College in the US. Middle class social status or better is almost defined by a university degree. I saw working class kids completely change their clothing styles within 30 days after they arrived at Pepperdine.

That's smart actually. He doesn't pretend he knows how it works so he doesn't go into such business.
It’s not that complicated. Buying a brand typically means you can think less. You more or less know what you will get without having to do a load of product research and diligence before buying.I think it started when there were first consumer products but little regulation .
I like how the interviewer pushes peter to talk on meaning and happiness, perhaps the lack of a contradiction comes with the fact that progress is part of happiness and fulfilment and that we can’t really turn back now as there are many people to support
Very facinating guy with a bright mind. Though one thing cought my attention which I found funny. He says that a bad plan is better then no plan, so having one when he was younger would have been better. But to me it seems it worked out quite nice anyways for him haha. Though I get his point.

He's smart no doubt. I like him. But what does he and Elon Musk change the world? It all depends of who's listening. And for me Elon Musk is not important at all... put a car in space. Great..but James Cameron seems more believable. Elon Musk must get some better special effects technicians to convince the general public.

most of normal people even in some of the high positions in Governance's do not understand the groups which control the fed/central banks which tend to spend absolutely on great levels if projects are viable for Governments so money actually is not the problem at all, its how it is distributed and spread among everybody.

I think Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are some of the coolest and smartest people of their generation. I'm invested in their future success... I wouldn't bet against them in the long-term -- but they do some very high-risk big payoff ventures from time to time especially Elon. Have to have the stomach to deal with the volatility in the short term.
Extreme cause Inertia
Brand names are built over time period and it definitely gives that value for the monies spent otherwise they will be routed out of business fro example lets say fashion industry does have charlatans because the fabric might not be that expensive but cut and name will be the expense but it cannot be done in auto tech engineering industry... food industry is subjective according to your taste but at the end Brand must deliver that high quality they promise otherwise it will shut down..... normal markets are driven by normal families and their economic lives
A very logic-oriented thinker: if you want to know how a Vulcan (of the Star Trek variety) thinks, this is about as close as the human equivalent comes. I was fascinated by his lack of understanding of how brands work...it speaks to his lack of emotional faculties, compared to the average (whether thats a good or bad thing is highly subjective: emotion tends to overwhelm our ability to reason effectively). Brands are beloved because they are familiar and are tied to our shared history, in many ways. Dove Ice Cream (and also a soap brand...err, awkward) sounds pleasant to the lips and also reminds us of peace, animal welfare (perhaps) and so on. Words and brands tie us to memories of good times, family, and other pleasant imagery. Generics remind us that we want to save money to buy more of other things :-P not as strong of a picture.
He takes the opposite track to Lee Hsien Loong who went to politics instead of academia/private industry.
His views on China seem outdated. They do a lot of research and experimentation (including governmental experimentation - something the US seems not to properly do - one of the side-effects of not having engineering oriented people in government)
... Nevermind, that's a minor point in relation to this video. He has some respectable stuff, even if he's a bit rigid in some of his beliefs. Would be great to debate / argue with, in person.
Leto2ndAtreides yeah, i wonder what he actually meant by that. im thinking he actually worded in a way that it might be understood as you did or maybe he meant the chinese are not doing r&d in areas that will revolutionize society.
He means that it's hard to build it in short time. You can't teach being innovativeness so easily. He thinks even after putting billions of dollars the outcome will be smaller than in openness, liberal, freedom based places like California. Maybe they will be in labs where you can test many theories one by one and find new stuff. But in creating completely new innovative products? How many top programmers in the world do they have? How many chinese are in top of world programming competitions? We will see but China is a different environment than western civilisation so outcome also can be different, with advantages in different fields.
i think we should be happy unconditionally, for no condition of meaning or reason. and to keep that state of being to use to explore and build technology for the purpose of expanding our happiness.

if you do what you love, you will be successful most of the time. Even competitive field. But you have to know what you want in your life. that's it. You need a reason to have what you want, but Sometimes you just feel it. Be sharp to feel your intuition. I know what I want. I want to make own family. Thats why I work. I think most people want to have great family life. If we made AUS the best country , everyone can follow. Earth is small. Universe is big. We have to invite some outsider to the earth. Think big is the key to make the earth better. I don't like Cinemark at long beach. I just don't feel good. Thats why I don't want my sister to visit to America yet.

i think enabling people financially to afford them more free time and energy to contribute to action-ably creating an improved tomorrow and foreseeable future would aid in creating an improved tomorrow and foreseeable future, along with both flexible open eloving education and focused production.
they are in no particular order really, so don't get discouraged if an aspect of it is not currently in our power.
services and information user interface, housing and amenities, land, utilities, food and nutrition(including grocery store), water, transportation, medical, daycare, and anywhere job income, are the main arenas to focus on and transform and advance to excellence. at the moment they seem to be vital cogs in the machine, anything else would be a distraction and a delaying of the inevitable. i think changing the inevitable is a sure quick way, perhaps necessary, to move the wheels of progress.
it enables people to focus more on bringing about change simply by freeing up peoples time and energy investments, especially of those of lower income people that are dependent and are fueling the power of that which resists progress and better for people.
i am a huge proponent on hacking life and reinventing what is possible. i want the lifeless parts of the market place, internet, software, and technology to naturally become obsolete as new life blossoms forth.
so perhaps some venture capitalists can create these things, i think it would be most effective if it was available for the whole world or country under one non competing identity(like one company or brand or shared movement or policy of which bands under common ideals of sustainability and lower cost of services). i think it will be very effective in accelerating technological progress along with all forms of progress.
so the idea is to reduce costs for low income people as much as possible along with being sustainable to ensure not becoming obsolete, and then to accomplish it, only once accomplished will further progress become much much faster or feasible or visible or possible.
the potential final forms this may take, that i am aware of being the current candidate to implement are: housing(3d printed or not, hempcrete, hempstone, hemplastic, earth ships, transportation is largely needed for the housing and land to work due to geographic availability of land and resources). even if it isn't the final form i think its a good transition toward a freer platform.
sustainable, lowest power, highest efficiency, functional form, domestic and local house amenities: capacitor current recycler, vertical fridge and freezer, full spectrum lights, heating coupled with open air dehydrator, induction cook top, water heating, oven, blender, juicer, miller(local), nut butter stone grinder(local), beehive(local), low water dish and clothes washer, o3 infuser to replace clothes detergent, low consumption essential diy hygiene products(toothpaste, shampoo, ect), magnetic water softener, water programmer, cheap hemp clothes shoes blankets rugs towels, cheap healthy cookware and glassware, cheap low water faucets, fans and air filtration, wired or beamed internet and phone, production accelerating and distraction reducing technology tools(computer, phone, software), and more.
hyperloop, vacuum tube, electric cars, bikes, trucks, motor-homes, and low cost public transit and taxi's, and low cost cargo shipping.
cheaper solar panel systems and batteries is perhaps required or advantages for food production on a domestic and local scale. would also get more people on solar which would effect other things. estimated average electric bill per year without fossil fuels is $700-900 with electric car, per person for basics. 6-9 kw solar panels and 14-21 kw+20 kw battery per person.
main food consumption from domestic and or local food production and grocery store (not a private interest business). grocery store would be like a local kitchen, it would operate based on what the people desire to eat to form a closer sync with food provider and food consumer.
sustainable and low cost water consumption(domestic if possible) and purification, and domestic waste management.
sustainable local jobs(located near all viable living areas based on settlements and water availability) and internet jobs focused on fostering low skilled people, too free people to reduce the fueling of the unpreferred systems to speed up the creation of new technology and a better world. if the businesses go bankrupt from employees not working their, then their unsustainable lives will be revealed to them and they will venture onto the path of sustainability. of which unconditional love, compassion, joy, and celebration are the only actual sustainable things there are.
if there were companies that could provide a complete or more complete system / path for people, all the necessities with out money down or interest, along with a humane job to pay it off, i am sure there are a lot of people that would be on board, which would fuel that kind of system.

peter theil, in 0 to 1, encourages only those industry verticals that can supports a monopoly. but all industries are not meant to be Darwinist. So basically according to him, launching a startup in a vertical that isnt meant to be a monopoly, is a futile exercise. Maybe yes, if you want to compete with a microsoft or google. Else its definitely worth it.
I like Thiel but he has a straw man interpretation of Keynes. I point this out because he normally prides himself on steel manning ideas that he disagrees with.
Mr Peter Thiel comes across as especially intelligent and clear headed. Hard to find fault with what he says except for his positive views of Ronald Reagan,. That one is, well, kinda puzzling..
His most influential teacher at Stanford was Rene Girard. Thiel stands in the shadow of Girard's prodigious intellect. He doesn't talk about him much but for those who know Girard's thought, Thiel is a great practical exponent of it.
So how many millions of dollar did Girard earn, how did he change the world?
Interesting interview, but he reflects the callous attitudes of our times. Providing people with health care who need it may not be as romantic as space exploration, but to them it can be life or death. Guess you have the luxury of thinking that way when you're a billionaire.
This guy is hard to understand.
