In this interesting ASMR video I am exploring an atlas of Europe, reading out facts about each country and looking at their flags. The video is calming and relaxing, hopefully helping you with sleep problems and insomnia. I am speaking in a male deep voice with a Welsh accent and switch between soft spoken and whisper voice.

History rant time ~ Alexander the Great conquered through the Persian empire from Greece down to egypt all the way to India. The current flag of North Macedonia resembles a pretty distinctive symbol that historians believe was flown on banners of the armies of Alexander. The balkans are and always have been a mess, so I generally try not to “take sides” or form definitive opinions on specific countries in the area, with the exception of North Macedonia 😂. I’m not an expert by any means, so correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I’ve read they are essentially Serbianized Bulgarians who were inspired by the former Yugoslav regime to start appropriating Greek culture centered around Alexander because they happened to inhabit the northern part of the same region where a man who conquered the majority of the ancient known world was born. From the time of gaining independence to the name change, they built statues of Alexander and named streets and buildings after him in North Macedonia. You can say its petty of Greece to be mad at them, but from my point of view as a history nerd I think its understandable 🤷🏻♂️😅. Regardless, glad they made the change and can move forward integrating into the EU at least.

10:40 Exactly, Alexander was born in Pella which is situated in Macedonia (the original one), Greece. That weird newely-founded country is consisted of Slavs who arrived at the Balkans in the 6th century AD and have nothing to do with ancient Greece. Also, their land was called Paeonia in ancient times.
Hahaha really funny to hear the greek propaganda about Macedonia.. They had to use propaganda system because they were so scared that Macedonia within Yugoslavia was gonna take Agean Macedonia back from Greece. Greek took that part of Macedonia in 1913 so please go learn something new

Alexander The Great was greek, that’s because ancient Macedonia was a greek state and there is a difference from the actual conception. Nowadays what we call Macedonia is only the north of the ancient land and its population is mainly slav. The south Macedonia and the ancient capital Pella are actually inside the greek border

Alexander the Great did rule Egypt. He was from the nation of Macedonia however his Macedonia included most of eastern Greece so he was not born in North Macedonia but was born in Macedonia proper

I've started learning Polish because I found out that it is the 5th most spoken language in the EU. It hadn't occurred to me at all how many speakers it had! 😱 Poland is a much larger and higher populated country than I was expecting! 😸👍 Djękuję!

i believe the book was made around 2016-2018 due to mauritania's old flag being shown (new one adopted in 2017), and also showing the country called 'north macedonia' instead of 'former yugoslav republic of macedonia', changed in 2018. so i think that the publishers heard that macedonia was changing their name and jumped the gun early

About Macedonia and Alexander the Great yes he was born in Macedonia and when he went to conquer the know world he became a huge « fan » of Egypt (because of the power incarnate by the pharaons and the beauty of the country itself) he made the plan for the city of Alexandrie but purchase his conquest to the east. He died in his early 20 and all of his military friends ( call « Diadoques ») went into battle to take control of the empire or juste part that were conquered. In Egypt it’s Ptoleme that take the lead , he was impress of the beauty of Egypt too and he became the first pharaons of the lagide dynastie.
Where he was born was part of the name/identity dispute over 'Macedonia'. Iirc there were some claiming he was born in North Macedonia, and that he was by Macedonian by ancient and North Macedonia standards. The Greeks had a problem with this, because Alexander was Greek, and was born in Pella near Thessaloniki, in the Kingdom of Macedonia, which was centered around the modern Greek Macedonia.
The squirrel-y part is that ancient Macedonia included North Macedonia AND Greek Macedonia, so technically both countries get a claim to that legacy (which was not something either wanted to swallow for a while). But, they settled the issue when the name change happened, so, progress! Gotta love history.

In the past Orkney's, Shetland's, Faroe Islands and Iceland belonged to Norwegian Crown.
Once upon time Ruler of Norway lose to Denmark a card game so Shetland's went to Danish Crown.
About Faroe Islands and Iceland.
I don't know and not sure but I think Denmark takes this territories after Napoleonic Wars ended and Denmark lose Norwegian Crown to Sweden (ruled by French Marshal Bernadotte and his dynasty in power in nowadays).

Lovely video; great asmr. Discussing borders will always involve disputes. BTW, Crimea is internationally recognized as part of Ukraine. Russia recognized it as part of Ukraine twice since the fall of the Soviet Union: first in 1994, when Russia (along with the US and UK) guaranteed Ukraine's sovereignty over its borders including Crimea in exchange for Ukraine giving up its nuclear weapons, and a second time in 2003, when Russia and Ukraine signed a formal treaty recognizing each other's borders, with Crimea a part of Ukraine. Russia's invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014 was illegal and not recognized internationally. Invasion and annexation by force do not legitimize border changes. Russia violated its own signed and ratified treaties when it invaded and illegally annexed territories of its neighbor in 2014.
Crimea was transferred to Russia by referendum in 2014, learn history, please!
