These are actually very good mics for the money. Very useable freq shelf, and sturdy build. Great as a pair for acoustic drum overheads, guitar cabs, you name it. For the price there's no reason not to have at least two of these in your mic locker.

love it, this microphone is no chump! I respect you thinking out of the box...literally. I will now have to try the MXL 990. I've heard other varieties of MXLs and wasn't impressed. But I have also tried the Rode NT1A next to a 1000 dollar TLM and COULD NOT tell the difference.

No, it really doesn't. It's a great budget mic, but lets not turn an underrated mic into an overrated one. It has a larger presence boost than a U87 which makes the vocals cut through a mix better, so it's great for artists who cut records like Fedarro here. However, it's also a very rough-sounding mic. Listen to shootouts between it and something like the Rode NT1-A. The Rode is way smoother, and even that mic isn't the smoothest of mics. That extra grittiness you hear isn't extra detail, it's actually just the sign of a cheaper capsule. But hey, maybe you want that grit. It all boils down to the sound you want, of course. For voiceover, the MXL990 is terrible because it doesn't accurately capture sound like other more expensive mics do. For rap and other similar sounds, it's great. It's not bad for streaming either. Probably not a good podcast mic, since that grit will get on peoples' nerves after hearing it for a while.
tl;dr
It has its applications, but let's not put it on a pedestal where it doesn't belong.

@@zian3694 Yes and no, it still sounds bright. Therere's a mod that can be done by replacing a capacitor to tame the upper frequency response. But maybe just try to spend a little more and buy a used Shure KSM32, if you can get it brand new, good for you.

At last someone who hear's this mic for what it is and not playing it down against other expensive mics, its almost as if other reviewers not all, are trying to keep the more expensive mics on brand in the industry which to me is like listening to an apple marketing team and like nothing is better .......By the way I have the MXL 990s and at first was embarrassed to mention it to my peers so thank you for this video and your vocals sound amazing. Just a pointer on expensive mics and something I picked up on from a guy whos been in the business since I was in diapers he explained that having expensive mics isn't always the way as for an audio engineer it can be a nightmare trying to mix the vocals due to placement of these expensive mics and have to be in a perfect room setting etc so £2000 + for these mics most musicians don't have the luxury look at Ed Sheeran Shure SM58 Vocal mic say no more.

That's true! I got the akg p220 and it's a good mic and my dude sounds like he was on a $1000 mic. When I put my voice on it it pick up mids too much cause I'm nasally. I love tho. I run it through outboard eq and compression to match my voice now I sound clear.

Your review is the truth. The stock out of the box MXL990 has served me well, especially in rooms that aren't perfectly treated. It's very forgiving and the clarity is amazing. It also shines for spoken word voice overs and instrument recording. I've seen people complain about the noise floor but it's not bad and easy to clean up. If I was just starting out I'd pick one up cheap and start recording. Then eventually get it modded before upgrading to any other mic. I wouldn't buy the 990/991 kit because the 991 is nothing special. Just get the MXL 990 by itself and maybe pick up a Behringer B-5 instead of the 991. I've got seven mics in my project studio, the MXL990, the Berhinger B-5, an SM57 and four SM58's. There's a lot of money to be made with just those mics.
Fantastic mic! I own 3. 1 for vocals, 1 for drum room mic, and 1 for outside kick drum. They are beasts! Works great also for miking a guitar cab about 2ft away!

@@TezBangaTV the Avatone Cv12. Its a multi pattern mic. its like having 4-5 mic in one. the omin-directional setting on this mic is outstanding as it gives you amazingly clear vocals. that mic should be $2000 easy but its only $500 brand new

Thing is, every voice and every mix needs something slightly different. While you can EQ just about _any_ mic to work (with varying degrees of effort/time), there are voices that instantly suit this 990, and other voices that _don't._ That's why most people keep at least a few flavours of mic on hand, to save themselves work when a different vocal character arrives in the studio. The 990 doesn't have quite as much body or sizzle as for instance the MXL 770 - which might be a better match in some scenarios. Personally, my thin voice could use more body. But I agree with you, you don't need expensive mics if you know how to match the right one of these quite-decent cheapies to the situation.

@@janezelle I don't know what "budget" means to you, but you could try a Rode NT1 - starting at US$200, depending on the accessory kit. It's a very flat freq. response, so your thin voice won't sound top heavy. If you need a low end boost, you could look at a the classic broadcast dynamics, like a Shure SM7B, and sing close up. But it's at least double the price. Start with the NT1 and try a little EQ boost around 200hz, and experiment from there.
I recorded my first track with one of these bad boys. I got it on Amazon for like $80. But yeah I love this mic 🎤

I'm not a pro. I record my vocals over free karaoke tracks and do the processing of vocals in FL Studio.
Mobility is my concern. That's how I arrived at buying USB mics. Easy to carry with my laptop. Finally I'm thinking about upgrading my mic.

yes especially when you apply a few techniques. The AT2020 is a good mic as well but i would get the hardware version not the usb version
I have a p420 it works very well ,i also have the p220. Ive noticed a big difference when plugging in to 2i2. This guy is very good at mixing im sure he has many good plug-ins to achieve this sound. So cheers to him. This can be misleading to think the mic sounds better but its because he can mix better. Perfect example of its not what u have but how u use it.

Raul Unzueta It’s the Kaotica Eyeball I think, but Alctron and budget gear companies make their own version, it’s essentially a pop/wind shield and reflection filter all rolled into one, I’d imagine it’s pretty handy for portability

…wait, but the noise floor reaches the ceiling doesn’t it? I’ve compared them myself in the studio. If you A/B this one with the TLM103, or NT1A, or U87, or anything that has a low noise floor, it’s night and day. In my opinion, to use this, you really have to go in and do some serious noise reduction, which cleans it up i guess, but then you end up cutting into the recording itself and degrading the quality. The only time I’ve used this is when I had a dense mix and the noise wasn’t too noticeable… but for the quieter mixes this one’s unusable for me.
you dont have to do noise reduction. most noise will be there via conversion via analog to digital. just get good cords. U87 is old technology. The magic happen in that capsule and those u87 103 capsules are nothing special, they just had first to market advantage being that they were one of the first recording mic companies in existence. alot of cheaper mics have the same freq response as that 103 and u87. mics like the cv12 and vangaurd v13 and 14 are leaps and bounds better than the neumann stuff. in my opinion......ive recording some of the biggest artist in the word on u87s and eventually had to switch them out

No such thing as "better" past about 50 bucks, only different. Both mics sound very similar, their freq response is close.
I personally prefer a V67G for my own voice, but the 990 is just as good. You could honestly own either and be 100% totally good for all your recordings with no issues.

I bought a 990 and sent it back. It was said to be a LDC but it isn't. The little capsule sits in a big dummy ring so it looks big though the grill. Mine sounded thin and tinny. It is a waste of money and something of a poser.
Trust me on this, if u can afford it , just get the Tlm103 and call it a day.
