  • Steam locomotives in Beitai steel factory (North-Eastern China). The high furnaces depicted in this video were closed in December 2012 and steam locomotives are no longer present on the site.

Thanks for putting these videos on. I had the great pleasure of being engineer/fireman on a Chinese SY locomotive for a few years. It was on a tourist RR in New Jersey, USA. The engine is still there undergoing maintenance at present.

thanks for these videos. I recall that operator of a tourist railroad had bought two Chinese steam locos...they were made nowhere else in the world.

They use both a steam whistle and a diesel horn..reason being...the diesel horn is louder and gets people's attention faster..plus its one of the trademarks of China steam engines..even the JS 2-10-2's have both horns...the steam whistle on these engines are also cool as well

what a shame that the furnaces were closed and steam is gone. Will there be enough mainline steam in Northern and Northern china or anywhere in china at all for that matter to keep railfans busy for a long time to come?

Great vid! When was this recorded?

Sorry, I meant Northern and Northeastern china. Will there be enough steam in those areas or anywhere in China at all to keep railfans busy for a long time to come? It's a shame they got rid of any of their steam engines at all

OK here's an easier question: How many QJs are still at work in China? I haven't seen hardly any of those in any of your videos. And will there be enough steam in China to keep railfans busy for a long time to come? Those are 2 questions.

I just can not believe these steam engines are still working. The boilers must be like 100 years old. And spare parts, forget it.

Actually, nowadays, they are no longer working. The steel factory closed shortly after my visit and the steam locomotives disappeared at the same time.

These ones may be gone, but china continued building new SY mikados until 1999. I don't know if boilers were made after that, but 20 years plus with maintenance isn't an unreasonable boiler lifespan anyway. Four locos were even built new for tourist operations in the US and Korea (one was lost at sea).
