Cat and dog. Also, my father, born in 1908, used many tools that were 100 years old when he used them. His hobby was building furniture with hand tools, and he had every one you could possibly imagine. Another also: flea markets and junk shops. Treasures to be found.

Dog person. But I do like cats. Except when they crap in my vegetable gardens. That hoe handle came out really nice! I have been restoring old handles, and new ones by sanding them down (scraping the nasty varnish off the new ones first), taking a propane torch to them to give them beautiful interesting patterns (I hear that sort of blackening the wood a bit makes them stronger and more resistant to the elements), and then oiling them with pine tar oil. They come out beautifully. In a work party situation, trail clearing or whatever, my tools will be distinctive because of the work I do on the handles, and it will obvious which tools are mine. I love old tools, they are definitely worth salvaging and restoring. Even though I'm a girl I have always loved old tools. My dad inherited a bunch of old hand tools from my grandpa and I used to go out in the garage sometimes and just look through the tool boxes. Old hand drills were some of my favorite. Such beautiful craftsmanship. If I had been in the country and around (and not so nomadic) when my dad passed, I would have asked for the old tools. The new tools are usually so crappy it almost hurts me to use them... hurts more to pay retail prices for them. A worker I had helping me broke my hoe handle by misusing the tool. I still haven't replaced it because I haven't been able to find a handle that fits. I went into the local hardware store (who didn't have a good selection of handles) and the guy tried to sell me a cheap and nasty new hoe (shaped like this hoe Jason just bought) with a plastic handle. Plastic. Yuck. I could really use my hoe right now, just about my favorite garden tool with a unique blade shape from decades of use by those before me. But I will wait until I can find a handle that will fit, I don't mind carving it down to fit. Otherwise I'll see if I can make one with the eucalyptus limbs I have collected. Really dense, heavy, hard wood that is difficult to carve, but I may have to make my own handle.

I enjoy shopping at flea markets and antique stores for bug out and bushcraft items. You can find lots of items ate not made anymore like old coffee pots and bush pots. I found a complete set of camping pots and pans, old lamps, auger bits, pack size mattock, old alice pack etc. I love both dogs and cats, but I have a special place in my heart for cats. Cats always seem to like me. 😂

I have a Stanley just like that.I have so many antique tools that i have restored. The old tools are so much better quality than the junk that they sell.
There's always been cheaper versions of tools and more expensive. I can remember there being screwdrivers, pocket knives and other stuff in the 70s where they had some sort of foil like coating on the metal and you used them a dozen or so times and the coating came off and there was nasty cheap metal underneath but I have screwdrivers from Stanley when they were made in Europe and America during the 80s, they weren't cheap and they are still just fine. It's great when you find some of the "just fine" stuff at places like flea markets, I like to see them go to people who appreciate them.
In a pinch when I'm out in the field I will use vegetable oil on my wooden handles till I get back to my shop. I carry it for cooking when truck camping. JMHO
my brother lives in Panama, brought me back an awesome machete from there when he came home to visit. Needs a little work on the edge but she's a beaut Clark!
I haven't had a cat in the house for about 9 years and the place is still mouse free. That cat insisted on being brushed every day, would come when I called or whistled and would walk on a leash. Caught mice all his life when he could. But my dog is my personal trainer. Over 1,100 miles a year walking him. They both have their place in the house. I've picked up shovels, fence posts, full bolts of cloth at flea markets.
I love your video!! I have a tip for ladies. I buy little boys heavy work boots or cowboy boots or even keen water shoes . Boys sizes are 2 smaller. Like an 8 in women's will be a boys 6 or 6.5. You will save a lot of money!!!
My husband and I love good old or new solid tools. If we have to buy new, then we always look for good quality. Yeah the upfront cost hurts a little, but most are well worth it!!
We have become a society of convenience, much to our detriment! A good balance is always a better, but always better to know how to use and maintain simple hand tools.
I still have every one of my great grandfather's hand tools , use them all the time, he was wooden ship builder, well owned the company that built the ships lol but have a full shop of hand tools
Flee markets are great, i tend to buy tools that would be hard to reproduce myself, such as files, saws etc. Restoring old tools is just fun and a hobby for me. Great video
I love flea markets for buying tools. I've gotten a full sized felling axe for five bucks, a small table vice for ten, an old butcher knife for ten and my favorite find, a Plum hatchet with the Boys Scouts logo on it for fifteen. Sold the axe and butcher knife for twenty five apiece. The hatchet and vice are keepers and used often.
My mauls and axes take a heck of a beating around the heads, 1/3 linseed 2/3 mineral spirits in a bucket is what I drop them in. My grandpa taught me to drill a hole in the base of the handle fill it with linseed and tap a dowel in. The oil infused the handle just like the water did when it was a tree
Jason -- I just watched a guy rehab a hand plane in about an hour real-time. It just so happens that I need to rehab mine old Stanley to finish a table that's not done yet. There's more to the plane than the cutting edge, but I'm pretty sure I'll use it better after working on it than I would be using a new one off the shelf. Cats + dogs = balanced.
JudithB Prefer horses actually!! I think old tools and better and stronger then new stuff, so I like to shop for them at flea mkts or 2nd hand stores. I would have grabbed the old canning jars for dry storage too, depending on price. I have a solar oven so got Pyrex and Corningware to cook in it. Both are good on a regular stove/oven too.

Definitely it is worth taking time to restore older tools, to someone my age, 70 it is almost a sin not too. Everything, or almost everything these days has built in obsolescence, one reason it is cheaper to manufacture, and second is that old profit thing, if people have to replace items more often there is more money for the manufacturer. one thing I thought you would do when you went to soak that grub hoe, after you commented about using motor oil and then in contact with the earth, I really thought, you would just use some of your cooking oil you use to run your truck, then no issues to worry about. I have a small selection of old hand tools (I'm an old woman with a ridiculous distrust of electrical equipment which never, in my experience, fails to break down forever at some point). That hoe head..I've an old iron mallet which was also slightly loose on an otherwise perfectly good handle. I hammered a large nail into the centre head of the mallet handle, which "widened" the end of it enough to tighten up the mallet. It's still working fine and the mallet head is still good and tight. Ideally you don't want that screw there. Those handles and eyes are tapered. Like tamahawk. Try removing the screw and setting the head a bit further on the handle. It should tighten just fine.
Any time I see estate sales with tools, rummage sales, etc, anywhere with secondhand tools, I always look for old files first. Old files are just better.

That's not going to be a cream-colored cat for very long around if it keeps sniffing around used motor oil. My dad was big into flea markets for tools, so I don't have to be. I should probably sand and sharpen things before I put them up for the year, though.

Old vs. new- I used to work in a hardware store. If you are willing to spend the money, then new hand tools can be better quality - better steels, better polymers, CADCAM machining, etc. Cheap hand tools are of even lesser quality than 40 or 50 years ago- recycled mystery steel, plastics with questionable ingredients, easily broken, etc.
Like ive said before, trade day or fle markets are the only place you can get a weedeater, a jar of peach preserves, a live chicken, and a potted plant and nobody look at you crazy. That's my kinda place all day everyday.

The closet Flea market near me is actually expensive for alot of things. Also, I have both dogs and a cat so that too. Yard sales near me is where I really find great deals. Especially when snowbirds come down here to Florida. I get great finds then.
I love the machete... that's what a machete should look like, flexible and lightweight, not the short swords they call machetes these days, I have one just like it, but new, the plastic handle was hollow, so the first thing I did was to replace it with wooden scales, I do like to improve my tools [or whatever] too, old or new! It's a kind of ''making it mine...''

A few years back, I picked up a brace & bit set, and an egg-beater hand drill both from the early 1900's for $20 at a flea market. Awesome deal!

Used motor oil and diesel 50/50 mix on it I do my homemade lumber and post with that and they will last forever

I've got a $ 200 pair of jeans and $180 dollar jacket. I paid less then $10 for both and many other things for less than cost and some was junk.

Got a 6" ice drill with a good blade for around $20 a couple of years ago. Keep your eyes open...

Giving new life and saving money on items is always good practice as there will come a time as history has proved when you will need these skills.
