    Hello guys, and thank you very much for a very nice channel on TH-cam! 😁 It is very inspiring to begin with, I myself do some bikepacking, overnight outdoor sleepovers, and enjoy spending time in the woods. Your videos, not just this one, took the inspiration to a whole new level. Wish you both a nice summer!

    I have a hatchett I need to make a mask for. We have some old boot leather we saved from a pair of my husbands old boots. I like the stiyched idea as well as the lace! Thanks for the idea. beautiful work as well of course!

    Awesome axe mask Krik. Love these leathergoods videos, keep em coming. I love quality gear that can be fixed by a simpleton such as myself. The easier the better as long as it's still a quality piece, and something tells me that all of your leathergoods are going to last a long, long time.

    repairability!! I was having this discussion with my boss yesterday! I design sites for our company, and they keep asking for features. When she asked me why I take so much time in the design phase, I told her: A) It needs to be right, and (most importantly) B) it needs to be manageable! Not dissimilar to repairable. I told her, I can build anything, but if I'm the only one who can manage what I've built. Then I've allowed a failure point to exist. it's hard for people to understand that. it could be a knife I make, a leather good I produce, a custom project, or a web page for my 9 to 5, everything can and often will at some point break. Designing a way to manage that when it happens isn't assuming the worst will happen or your product sucks, it's simply a way of making sure that what you've created can exist forever, no matter WHAT happens! if it can't be easily fixed, than it's disposable!

    When the moveable part wears out on the one side, just pull it tight and the other one through. Effectively swap sides, that should do the trick right?

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea that would probably work pretty well! As long as it's not too stretched in the area where it meets the holes. But I'll definitely check to see when it wears out.

    where do you buy your leather for your projects?

  • @KevinDufflev
    @KevinDufflev 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really like the mask but just as a suggestion why not use a tapered thong (what I use.) What this does is gradually increase tension as the leather wears .

  • @RViscara
    @RViscara 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't mean to be disrespectful of your talented leather work and I may be talking out of my backend but wouldn't rivets be better for the seem where the blade sits?

    • @smokymountainoutdoorsman1991
      @smokymountainoutdoorsman1991 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe, but I think he goes for the more traditional, handmade look. Either kind works fine though.

    • @neversinkoutdoors
      @neversinkoutdoors 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make a fair point, but personally I would be perfectly comfortable with this sheath (beautiful work, btw).
      Also, if you are concerned that the axe blade will accidentally cut the stitching (a small risk that can be further reduced by exercising some care when putting the mask on), I would be concerned that the same contact could happen with rivets and could result in the blade getting nicked. As far as I'm concerned, I'd prefer to occasionally repair the stitching than to have to regrind my axe. Your mileage may vary.

    • @smokymountainoutdoorsman1991
      @smokymountainoutdoorsman1991 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Your mileage may vary." Your talking like nutnfancy. Lol.

    • @RViscara

      That makes sense Neversink.

    • @BlackOwlOutdoors
      @BlackOwlOutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rivets would work just as well (as long as they're softer than the blade's steel). There is a welt in this sheath which protects the stitching. And I made it extra wide for extra assurance, it's just hidden inside the sheath.

    repairability - never glue main wedges, never fit steel wedges, leave about 3 /16 inch free kerf unfilled with wedge so it can be driven a bit further.at the first sign of it getting a little loose. If the head ever needs removing or jumping up, you will be glad you hung it right in the first place
