this video is crazy old and I remember watching it when I was a freshman in college... now a professional musician, stumbled upon the video looking for some new vocal exercises. and I have to say, your tip of “love your voice as is” couldn’t be more on the nail. music is about embracing who you are, instead of trying to be (or sound like) somebody else. thank you for making that point to a young me and giving confidence to young rappers and vocalists
Vocal inflections are a great way to convey a particular emotion. If you take it a step further, you can even try to put yourself in an emotional state, such as anger, and see what kind of vocal inflections will your emotion produce. You do that for ever emotion and you end up with a catalog of vocal inflections, tailored to your own energy. Of course, the whole method should remain as flexible and intuitive as possible.
Oddly enough, I sound the opposite. In my head, my voice is higher pitched than it is when I hear myself on a recorder. When I hear myself on a recording device, it sounds more like I deep mumble.
streetough same, I myself am a female rapper and I have a deeper voice than most females. But when I rap people are like DAMNN and I was really shocked when someone showed me a video of me rapping because it turns out my voice is MUCH deeper than I had thought
Love your voice man. Its good you sound different. Use that to your advantage. At its core Emceeing is about expressing yourself, not trying to fit in. My advice, love it and use it.
I'm in an online course at my college and they use a program called CollegeScope that helps with college success. The program actually uses this video in order to help students learn how to use their voice better when speaking. Good video by the way.
my voice is actually deeper on tape. i have a deep voice in general. Do I want a more higher of a pitch or is the low pitch good. I listen to beast coast such as Flatbush zombies, underachievers, pro era, etc.
Trust me I feel this video so much lol. Everyone...from middle school to a couple of days ago, tells me I sound so much like Eminem when I freestyle and that has always gotten under my skin. I love Em and think he is amazing but I knew I wouldn't get the second glance you need to get noticed if I kept it the way it was. So now I have a couple of...admittedly unorthodox tactics with my voice nowadays.
Geez. This video would have been SO helpful a few years back. It helped my friend, whom has just started rapping though. Thanks! Listen to this dude guys, it took me 4 years to figure this shit out on my own.
Keep listening to your voice on recordings and get use to your voice on "tape." Eventually your expectation will adjust. You're right. You can't control what other people hear. Find whats unique about your voice and highlight it in your flows.
Here's what you do: the next time you get excited, angry and you are talking, notice what your voice is doing. Rap is vocal theater. Put those excites/angry tones in your voice to "act out" the emotions of the verse. The other improvement is speaking in the rhythm. Every syllable in your lines needs to be synced to the beat, not just the end rhymes.
I dont have any specific techniques for this just yet, but I know rappers who studder when they speak, but not when they rap. I imagine it just takes focus practice on making the R sound. Start slow then speed up the tempo. Hope this helps.
My voice is really deep so it’s hard to rap this is the kind of video I got my technique and my lyrics sorted I just wanna improve my voice I’m taking classes for beats
that last point (Love) seemed trivial when you first mentioned it... but it ended up being the most important part of this video. ACCEPT YOURSELF and EXPRESS YOURSELF :)
i have a naturally monotone voice, but whats great is that my best friend just so happens to aswell, and his voice is an exact octave lower than mine so when we sing we harmonize really well, however with rapping its harder for us to alternate pitch, great vid man!
I'm only talking about vocal quality in this video, not giving my preference on "good/bad" rap artist. As an Emcee educator, I must think critically about the art form of rap, and dissect the elements to teach emceeing effectively. Whether I like Nikki or Lil Wayne is besides the point. Hate them or love them, they have unique rap voices. Young aspiring rappers should develop their own unique voice and not simply imitate the hottest rapper of the time. Sorry if I'm not as smart as you thought.
good point..god bless..u talked about hearing your voice differently because the vibrations in your head. . Thank u n i hope u see this..this is not my phone by the way. so its not my account. .just saying..but thanks..too many dislikes on this vid
Nice tips. this is exactly the advice I needed. Im just getting into writing, and my lyrics are really good imo, but I cant perform it live yet because my delivery is not what I want it to be. When I do it public, I want people to be in awe.
i've been writing for 6yrs now and till recently i kept it only to myself but now, with encouragement from my friends, i want to record what i write. What is write is mostly about politics and how blindly people follow religion without knowing real meaning of it and stuff we usually compromise in our life. Now the problem is that i am an Indian and i have an accent different than the the English or Americans. i've been trying to do it but still when i record its not that good. I would really need some help with that.
bro if you can rap with an indian accent that would sound dope, especially with what you write about cos thats what rap needs to hear right now. diversity is amazing right now and rapping about real shit makes it dope. look up dance all night by the dirty heads when Matisyahu raps it sounds fucking great, hes not indian but its kind of like a Jamaican accent he raps with and it sounds so awesome
I agree. Rapping with your own Indian accent would be a separating factor from all of the other rappers and it's all about getting your message out there anyway. A lot of rappers who have imitated American hip hop eventually start using there own voice and get comfortable with how they sound. Art is all about expressing who you are and so you should try and do that the bast way you think you should.
Im glad you made this video because for a while now I have been trying to figure out how to improve the sound of my voice. I don't consider myself a rapper and that not my way of knocking anyone that calls themselves one but I do believe there is a difference between a Rapper and an MC. Anyway thanks again for the video.
Hey these videos are great I don't think there are many people who know how to TEACH the art on Emcee, but you lot are doing a really great thing I wish that more people knew about what you got going on here
Thanks good tips, just that It would be useful if you gave us an example about the vocal excersices and the breath taking, cuz i think thats my biggest problem when i rap
We are all influenced by our favorite emcees. The point is not to directly replicate style which is more than your voice (a topic for another video). If you are being true to yourself and finding your own greatness, then do you.
Hey first of all thanks a lot for the video very helpful! Im going to be doing my first studio session in a week and I'm wondering what steps i should take too prepare (besides the obvious like have what i want too record ready) Thank you!
this video acctualy spoke to me because I never rehersed because i would say my rap into a recorder and I hated how i sounded so i would just scrap the whole thing man it bothered me to know end because when i talked to people they say i have a lisp but idk if its just because half the time im not focused on the conversation and dont care about the rest of the sentence so i like begin to trail off or slur sometimes so i tool this realy deep (off topic) but thank you for putting this up sooo much
Could you go through the different types of rap voices? Because there are people who sorta "sing talk" (IE: Cake, then again they aren't really rappers), and there are people who rap angrily like Eminem, then there are people who sound relaxed and calm when they rap. I am just trying to understand all the different styles.
Okay so I know I'm talented at WRITING my rhymes, I can write two songs a day and never use the same rhyme again but I have a tendency that when I try recording I'm quiet and such or I don't feel like I'm good enough to release the track. How do I get passed all this?
Fight your way through until you become the confident emcee that you desire to be. learn, grow, fail, flow, repeat. You don't go passed this stage" you go through it. Its the fire to make your sword, if you catch my metaphor.
Official Atlas Don't be shy man, release your shit, people that who will listen can help you giving advices too, and if you got haters, then use it as a motivation to do better the next time, haters help alot to get better in my opinion.
hey dude thanks for the video put shit in perspective for me. i was always tryin to get out of the "white guy voice" but i'm going to start embracing it and seeing how different amounts of force will make it fit
ok ill work on that, it is probably because i wrote to another beat, (Sing for me by Kendrick) maybe ill try to rap it on that instrumental... or do all of my songs sound off flow?
Can you do a video on making your thoughts into a rap? It would help me out alot! Im only 14 but i grew up with rap from my birth I've seen all of your videos and its helped me so much. Its all i think about is music mostly rap, not many of my friends listen to rap so its hard when that's all i wanna talk about. Eminem is my hero i know literally all of his songs. I wanna be an idol to other kids that think they can't rap cause they're white. All respect homie love your vids deuces.
+DAN considering what he said and another guy said, you might be. You might be subconsciously trying to mimick your favorite rapper or a rapper you listen to a lot who has a slightly higher voice.

And yet despite this, the best rapper of all-time is basically monotone.
Planet erf... was my place of birf...
I do love me some Sadat X though
how do i fix it if my voice sounds too white
LMAOOOO.
Forever the White Man's biggest struggle!😂
+David Gamboa on god bro lmao
+Drew Barnes 2 FPS my friend, it's the future. (It's a good video who cares xD)

+Drew Barnes embrace it. Everyone has a unique voice.
I literally just started wanting to rap 10 minutes ago any more tips
Jersey Silva pls don kill me
***** If you'Re black spit some fiya rite now :D
you have to study it first. pay attention to how the people you like rhyme
Jersey Silva fix ur face
use some triplet flows, ad some adlibs, and use lots of autotune

Being 14 and going through puberty reaaaaally doesn't help.
I sound like a dying mouse.
Dat Crusader same bruh lol
Dat Crusader I'm 20 and still sound like a homosexual. Fuck it man who cares, good music is good music, people will listen to talent
Cl1che dont worry about it too much man, do what you like
haha same bro, I'm 14 as well. I get bloody voicecracks while recording
wish it was like that, mumblerap these days
I'm 13 year old rapper and female when I watch your videos it inspires me to keep going sometimes I feel like nobody cares and you r helping me
Variation in your tone is a good thing. Blending with the music really depends on your style. The most crucial thing is to be on beat.
I'm in an online course at my college and they use a program called CollegeScope that helps with college success. The program actually uses this video in order to help students learn how to use their voice better when speaking. Good video by the way.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll check out college scope. Glad this is useful. :)
I checked it out. You sounded like you were reading the lyrics. Remember your lyrics so you can focus on the delivery. That will improve your voice.
Ya, i cant stand my voice, i get so angry when i hear it
everybody sounds so different but love your voice
thank you the way i hear my self i sound good but the way i sound on a recording is disguisting
I know how you all feel cause that's what happens to me NOOOOOOOOO:(
No mixtape. Released three albums independently and beginning a fourth. Emcee training has become my main focus at moment, but it keeps me creative.
You sir helped me forge the artist iam today I've only rapped properly for about 5months and your work really shows in my videos keep it up man.
Thanks. glad to help.
Its all good. My goal is to use all disagreements as a moment to gain and give understanding. Thanks for the support, I'm glad it helped you.
That robot rap voice... It's strange but I like it.
Do you enjoy todays rap?
*Mumble rap appears*
my voice is actually deeper on tape. i have a deep voice in general. Do I want a more higher of a pitch or is the low pitch good. I listen to beast coast such as Flatbush zombies, underachievers, pro era, etc.
+Astral Strutz That's surprising. As long as people can understand what you are saying, its all good.
i would say dont box yourself in to a single style.
Strutz3E damn right word up brooklyn
dang i really needed this man, thanks a lot for this. hopefully this is a turning point for me
Glad to be of service.
Thanks for the tips its so easy to focus on other artist and for get to be original, basic tips are always the best ;)
Learning this in 2020 during quarantine

Damn thank god i heard the 3rd one i was hearing myself and comparing my voice to all of my favorite rappers
It's works?
What do you mean?
@@RhymeMastersCommunity what I mean is I'm trying to get my rap voice sound like central
Sorry if this is too late. Warm up your voice with glottal fry exercises (search youtube). Its a great way to warm up vocal cords.
Keep listening to your voice on recordings and get use to your voice on "tape." Eventually your expectation will adjust. You're right. You can't control what other people hear. Find whats unique about your voice and highlight it in your flows.
Right on. Gaining confidence to share with learning all these skills.

+bahri ghaieth What is wrong with gays?? you ignorant douche
Glad to be of assistance. Kool G Rap has a lisp and is one of the greatest Emcee's. He inspired Eminem's flow. Keep doing you to the fullest.
u didn't even show how to do the warm up
practice your breathe control. incorporate commas in your lyrics to add emphasis to certain words and to take quick breaths
Keep rapping and developing your lyrics. You're on the right path.
thanks man gonna practice
Thanks a lot man. This really helped because everything you just described was EXACTLY what i was going through.
i have a naturally monotone voice, but whats great is that my best friend just so happens to aswell, and his voice is an exact octave lower than mine so when we sing we harmonize really well, however with rapping its harder for us to alternate pitch, great vid man!
Thanks, man. Just to let you know I do check out your videos when I get the chance.
I don't know why you have any dislikes great insight thank you thank you thank ya

great video, love how open hearted and helpful you are

Thanks good tips, just that It would be useful if you gave us an example about the vocal excersices and the breath taking, cuz i think thats my biggest problem when i rap
I mean, it means a lot that you made videos like this.Thank you!
great video i use to wonder about this i tried to stay clear from auto tune but trying the asap rocky effect check it auto thought straight freestyle
Ah, the things stop motion photography can do these days
breathing and projecting your voice will help a lot. Watch public speaking videos and be confident with your voice

can you do a video on finding/improving flow..??? please it would help out out alot. and im sure alot other ppl as well.
Love will never not be the answer.
keep loving this video - share it with my clients to teach them diaphragm breathing and "love your voice"
I helped open my mind to it the while vocal inflection stuff
Hey first of all thanks a lot for the video very helpful!
Im going to be doing my first studio session in a week and I'm wondering what steps i should take too prepare (besides the obvious like have what i want too record ready)

Great advice bro. Facts
Please make more videos. How do i stop my voice from bein "monotone" im tryin to bring out my "flavor"

+RAGE MASTER hahaha
+RAGE MASTER It's quite cinematic, don't you think? x3

thanks for your imput, and yeah im sturggling alot with that im going to have to go back and re write or practice perfecting my syllables
Okay so I know I'm talented at WRITING my rhymes, I can write two songs a day and never use the same rhyme again but I have a tendency that when I try recording I'm quiet and such or I don't feel like I'm good enough to release the track. How do I get passed all this?

I started rapping a week ago, and i recorded 2 days ago an my Voice just too deep an flat, emotionless shit but i know there is room for improvement
YOOO same shits wack Fr😞
You'll get there. Deep voices work well in rap, especially for communicating authority.
Great question asked, same here
Knowledge of the power of vibrations, emotions and thoughts.
hey dude thanks for the video put shit in perspective for me. i was always tryin to get out of the "white guy voice" but i'm going to start embracing it and seeing how different amounts of force will make it fit
Very Helpful.
really helped. ima shout you out in my next song
EmceeMind is where its at!!
Thanks I love all the videos !
Love your voice. Best advice.
Thank you
ok ill work on that, it is probably because i wrote to another beat, (Sing for me by Kendrick) maybe ill try to rap it on that instrumental... or do all of my songs sound off flow?
I'll check it out.
It's quite impressive and pretty helpful.
Thanks for the tip man i apreahate it
Homie G you're welcome
Can you do a video on making your thoughts into a rap? It would help me out alot! Im only 14 but i grew up with rap from my birth I've seen all of your videos and its helped me so much. Its all i think about is music mostly rap, not many of my friends listen to rap so its hard when that's all i wanna talk about. Eminem is my hero i know literally all of his songs. Can u make a video on how to write it in book like verse and bridge i have a good voice but that is the only problem
+GamerR How to write a verse... i'll throw it in my cue of ideas. thanks for the suggestion.
ok that actually helped, thanks alot =)
+Mad Viks You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
*My voice sounds lower to others than it does to me lol*
+Cool Whip Samee people make fun of me thinking I'm trying to make my voice higher .
+DAN considering what he said and another guy said, you might be. You might be subconsciously trying to mimick your favorite rapper or a rapper you listen to a lot who has a slightly higher voice.
How do I learn to write dope rap lyrics?
I was happy with the third advice!!
NEED A VIDEO ON VOCAL/BREATHING EXERCISES!! THAT WOULD BE GREAT
Thank you man this is really impressive...but I need more assistance on how to rap on beat to a instrumental...without summering words
