I spent a year in Japan as an exchange student, and sometimes children/teenagers would call out to me in English on the street and ask me to talk in English to them, which was a wild experience for me. And also like Connor said, getting stares as a foreigner was super common, and I had the same experience of it being weird because in my country I look like just another joe. Those stranger moments do make for fun stories though, like two teenagers saying to each other like "wow look at those two (me and my exchange student friend, both in uniform) foreigners! I wonder if they speak Japanese?" and my friend turned to look at them and said "yeah I do" in Japanese. Their faces were just amazing.

Born and raised in an Asian country, foreigners (white people especially) do sticks out. In here they sort of an attraction (they'll become an instant celebrity) to locals, they'll try to talk to you in poor English, get to know you, asking where are you from, why are you here, what do you like about this country, etc. Then proceeds to take a selfie with you. I know if it sounds weird, but that what mostly happen to a lot of foreigner here. And if the foreigner speaks local language (even if it sounds bad) they'll be very happy

At the part with the cherries I had to think about recently buying butter in Germany. The cheapest butter available was from Ireland, even though Germany has a huge amount of local milk production with a whole lot of different stuff made from that milk. There has been times were Germany had a huge surplus of butter, literal piles of butter that couldn't be consumed because no one needs that much butter in their life. The price difference wasn't that much but if you think about that butter having to travel per ship and truck and the need for constant cooling on the way, you just wonder how they manage to be cheaper (like 0,50€) than local production. Plus local farmers get huge subventions from the government and the EU (guess Ireland gets the EU money too) but still, I can't understand the price difference.

I’m Italian and Barolo is a well known wine from Piemonte, but you tipically drink it while eating meat, it’s pretty strong to drink it with empty stomach

so.. let me get this right,
Japan: please come here, we need workers
Also Japan: we hate foreigners, please pay more money for the same shit and go through this patronising and tedious process for moving, living and working.

Honestly, it's hilarious. I mean this is pretty standard stuff for poor minorities who don't "fit the mold" everywhere. From aggressive visa requirements to get into "Western" countries to racial profiling by cops, it's all there. It was funny to see the script get flipped got on Connor but sadly familiar

The government knows it desperately needs workers and immigration but at the same time it's unable to change fast enough to actually allow people in, and also for Japanese society as a whole to be more foreigner friendly..

@@smalllJ Well gigguk was the one who got racially profiled. Connor wasn't. Connor's concern wasn't about racial profiling it was that if he got pulled over by a cop due to his inability to communicate and his lack of understanding of laws he wouldn't be able to communicate with the cop and wouldn't know what he did wrong. Completely different to the parrelel you're trying to draw.

It's needs vs wants. They really would prefer more Japanese workers, but since Japanese are working constantly they don't produce enough offspring to meet replacement rate, let alone increase the population. It's been a concern for decades, but it's only just becoming a real problem now.
