It's cute how you implied there are hundreds of bad levels in Generations when the game can be beat in an afternoon which is one of its biggest flaws
While it doesn't have hundreds of levels there's a load of those missions or whatever, which give you the keys.

Such as green hills water filled caverns that look really cool, and make it feel like more than just Green Hill. Flying battery was repurposed into a clean up vessel, gathering the scraps of destroyed badniks and such.
Forces is just "Green Hill but with sand" "chemical plant but in the ocean"

I don’t think “Sonic CD” and “Good Level Design” should really be in a sentence together, even as someone who likes CD. The level design is so much more vapid and hectic than any of the other games with very little challenge. It’s done that way for easier platforming (tied to hunting down the robot generators), but the platforming imo was done better in other games. I, with all respect, disagree about CD being the best in any gameplay regard, certainly not against Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
S3&K’s level design is more involved and structured than anything in CD and CD also possessed water levels as well (that possessed no real challenge to them, even if you were going for the robot generators). Hydrocity Zone from S3&K operates on the idea that players who are better at the game can largely ignore the water and remain at a fast pace, with less experienced players taking the water-filled bottom routes. This idea also permeates Sonic 2’s Aquatic Ruin Zone but the underwater lower paths in HZ are less punishing than in ARZ.
You could also avoid the pink water section of Sonic 2's Chemical Plant Zone. Took a tricky jump to do, but you can skip that section of the stage and go right to the boss fight.
SA2 had great level design, because the game rewarded you for exploring. Games from Colours on have Red Rings everywhere, usually really easy to spot, but if you take the wrong path you won't get it, making it more frustrating, since the levels are more linear.

Sonic CD was a clusterfuck of a game though.
I mean the Time traveling mechanics were badly implemented as there hardly any slopes or loops to go full speed to activate it as there are so many obstacles or wall that requires a spin dash or spring to pass but they slow you down to lose those sprinkles and chance to time travel.
that meant mostly the only way to activate them is specifically find a specifically made place to bounce from spring to spring.

SEGA has been intentionally vague about Sonic Mania's sales numbers, from what I recall.
It had enough success to have additional content a year later, so I can't imagine it was a failure.

its literal first trailer talked about "going back to the start". it was made for Sonic's 25th anniversary. it had many references to old games (from obscure games like Sonic the Fighters and more known games like Sonic 3) and like, only 1 or 2 to the modern games (and even then, they were from the 2d ones like the advance series). you yourself said it was about REINVENTING the classic games. it catered specifically for those who loved the classic games.

As a kid who played the original 3 games in a Sonic mega drive collection for the DS, and somewhat the PS4 as well, Sonic Mania is anything but nostalgia, it's just a game that TRYS to be nostalgia, but doesn't click with me at all. It's effectively a huge cellection of reused assets(even if that's what it's trying to be) and a story that I can't even put close to the previous ones when it came to love and passion, Sonic 1's Scrap Brain and Final Zone filled you with determination to finally take down Eggman, Sonic 2 has him sent to the Death Egg to finally put Eggman to his place once again, and Tails shows friendship by saving Sonic at the last moment, in Sonic 3 we spent all the time making sure the Death Egg doesn't re-launch and once it does we reach into space to finish it off, with Doomsday zone being one of the most chaotic and adrenaline inducing moments in all of Sonic history. Sonic Mania, is about this weird crystal(I know it's called the Phantom Ruby, but I didn't give a fuck about what it was when I first played it) that can...take sonic to other stages...oh yeah and those Egg Robots turned into...Hard Boiled Heavies apparently...and we have to stop them...for whatever reason...as if EVERYTHING Eggman does just has to be evil am I right. Yeah, the story was so shit I didn't care about it, and so didn't have any feelings towards the gameplay because its basically just Green Hill, Chemical Plant, etc. Sonic Mania is overrated in my opinion and Plus even more so.
@@autistichades5552 Yeah, this is the problem I also have with the intro to Mania. It feels like a waste of an animated segment, since it doesn't hype up or tell us what's going on at all. At least Sonic and Knuckles opening bit showed the Death Egg, which is SOMETHING at least a tiny bit plot related.
Mania lacks a coherent story, maybe because the people who made the game only made re-makes before and never needed to do a full fledged story or maybe the ties to Forces put down what could have been.
Then again, there are plenty of people who think Sonic games should be a mindless experience with no story or plot elements at all, even though Sonic games have always been about the drive to find out what's going to happen next, at least pre-Colours games did that.

This is meant to be a nod back to the Classic era, and I get none of that nostalgia at all, hell I'd say Sonic Generations did it better. I feel they could've just made a Sonic game in the Genesis style, rather than just trying to fill everything to the brim with reused zones, features, badniks, etc. I also don't like how this guy believes that Sonic CD was the best game and Sonic 3 the worst. I know it's his opinion but true Sonic fans(or just people who actually invest their time into the game and not just play it for 15 minutes and call it a day) like me would have the polar opposite opinion to him.
@@autistichades5552 My issue with Generations is I really don't like the boost formula plus again it lacks a decent story and the game is way too short. In the end you're paying for the mods instead of the game itself. But I do get what you're saying, either go all out with reused levels or use none at all.

Yes because in this age of Mania, Team Sonic Racing, the IDW series, and entire shots in a big budget Paramount film being completely reworked, Sonic is dead. You're jogging and then you break into a full on sprint instantly, a same issue Sonic Forces is so frequently raked over the coals for.

Okay I’m gonna be honest here, this video feels more of just a biased video especially with not knowing the exact information such as the sales of mania and forces or even who made them. Not to mention stating about how sonic R passes off as a fact rather than a opinion from how I viewed it. You also failed to acknowledge the core gameplay of the adventure games when it comes to exploration and replay-ability. It would’ve been better to at least to give out constructive criticism to specifically tell what they could improve on. Such as hire more developers, or don’t rush the game (which we did see them delaying their games such as mania and TSR so far)
Too bad TSR misses out characters like Cream though... Plus there's less playable characters in it that MK Double Dash.

While I agree with most of the video, how is Sonic 3 a step back from Sonic CD, but you go on to praise Sonic Mania? Sonic Mania shares so many qualities with Sonic 3 & Knuckles over Sonic CD. Also, you claimed that Sonic Forces sold only 100,000 copies? Where are your sources? A quick search will show that the true number (at least for first week sales) was closer to 234,000. While it's embarrassingly low, just exaggerating isn't helping you sound any more credible.

“Sonic CD levels are streamlined” wtf no they aren’t. Wacky work bench where you bounce everywhere. springs everywhere. The levels felt more like a labyrinth. Trying to go from past to future is annoying since you gotta have a good idea on how the level is designed to be able to get the right amount of momentum to time travel. In order to get the best ending, you either need to keep 50 rings at the end of the level (easier said then done especially for a first time player) or go to the past and find the one machine located somewhere in the level.
The one with the streamlined levels was sonic 2.

juneru The Super Nintendo came out in 1990, a year before Sonic. The Genesis was not doing well in America before he came around, and the Master System was almost non-existent in America at the time. The markets that Sega were doing well in (notably Europe) were areas that Nintendo didn't do particularly well in for years.
Tl;dr, In America at least, it was Nintendo curb-stomping Sega pre-Sonic. Your second point's still good though.

yeah ive seen this trend of youtubers "over-editing" recently. they just add so many effects and transitions that dont need to be there.
It's the whole "deep fried" meme category, where you intentionally get as many ugly graphics as you can, then boost saturation and throw ten filters on it so it looks like it was melted in a microwave. This is supposed to target the "so-bad-it's-good" boundary but normally just ends up being cringey.
Anyways I've given up on watching this channel for the exact thing you mentioned, but I find his topics mildly interesting so I just tab away and listen to him while browsing some other text based medium.

As a Sonic fan myself who is a big fan of his confident personality (plus he's blue my favorite color so points there) it's just sad to see him fall so far from grace. The fandom is actual trash, and the ONE TIME he could've bounced back thanks to a film, they made him look like...something out of a literal nightmare. Hopefully the redesign will be better but I highly doubt it. Poor Sonic.
I don't think the entirety of the fandom is rubbish. They do have a pretty vocal minority (although it's really hard to call them a minority) that is pretty fucking terrible but still.

Adding storytelling was a bad idea for adventure ? script made by a 4 years old ?? Afaik the script writers did some research for the lore (more than this video at least) and even some trip for it, and uhh every 3d game had a story by the end of the n64 era but hey Sonic did it and failed miserably what a loser.
I'm disappointed this is again another attempt at showing all the bad sides of the Sonic licence to make it seem like it only failed time and time again and pull out the "it didn't sell well" card when sales means nothing about a game quality. Sure the Sonic licence has changed its formula time and time again and it not always brought back good result but I wouldn't call Sonic a corpse for that, like Mario (I'm gonna use him since op decided to use him for comparison purposes) never changed it's gameplay on a fundamental level and no one calls him outdated or says Mario should change, Mario found it's fitting formula and stuck to it for it's mainline entries, Sonic did but wanted to please newer fans so it changed, that ended leading to some bad games like 06 (I'm not gonna comment on the usage of 06 as the stapple of worst game because of it's overuse by people trying to defame the series while it has changed) and some very good games like Colors and Generations, now unfortunately the games are not perfect and no game is actually so I don't know why we're trying to judge the sonic games like they're supposed to be.
I'm gonna end this by saying the Sonic licence is mishandled, at times it brought some really good games, sometimes the games were mediocre at worst and some very case where the development was a real hellfire but we shouldn't remember a licence only for a few bad games that tainted the series forever because to be fair if the series was this bad there wouldn't be any Sonic Mania to begin with and most importantly there wouldn't be any Fanbase to speak at all, I can assure you the if the fanbase is still alive and this creative then that means the licence is not dead far from that.
Tldr: this video is again another attempt at showcasing ever wrong doing in the Sonic licence and then say the series was never good except for these few exceptions while Sonic just has trouble pleasing it's audience (without using a gimmick to make the game longer might I add)

Mario did change his gameplay when jumping to 3D, and simply made whatever sonic followed with a worse game, mario 64 was just such a good game that i don't think any sonic game at the time could top, even though sonic was (disputedly) beating mario in 2D.

The Sonic movie did _okay,_ not _great._ Yeah, it's probably the best-reviewed movie based on a video game so far, but this means nothing when it's a 6/10, and the title holder before that was Mortal Kombat with a 5/10. How does generations suck? I freaking love that game and the 3d sonic stages especially are freaking cool. In fact with how often you play the same stages for rings you do in fact have an actual reason to get faster (to get to the point you need to get in the stage faster) to the point where you really do get the sense of speed he was talking about, especially with the boost button. Maybe the 2d sonic stages aren't the best but they are still good, better than alot of the games... I don't get it.

@@lucascurio8345 I don't have nostalgia for sonic, I didn't actually start playing sonic games until I was like 16 and that's only 1 and 2, never really played them that much.
I played generations with a relatively blank slate and freaking loved it. I'd have to examine in for the stalled movement but from what I remember the only time there was stalled movements was when I bumped into a wall and with multiple playthroughs of the statges to get the red coins I was able to avoid those and feel awesome. Like if you speedran generations it would be kickass!
Besides, the old games had a shiton of parts where the speed was stalled, check out summoning salt's video on sonic for info on that.

I agree. I love the Sonic series as much as the next guy but I will admit, bad games will always exist in the series. I didn’t like 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball on the Game Gear was boring as hell, Sonic Advance 3 had some bad level design, and Shadow the Hedgehog & Sonic ‘06... well, we know.

I think if you play it a certain way, the gunplay and running can combine to form a smooth experience that feels good when it works. Granted the story and weird edginess ages exceptionally poorly, but it’s not as bad as it’s portrayed.

Allow me to preface this by stating that I respect your right to your own opinion and enjoy the content you create.
That being said, I really just don't like this video at all. It's clear early on that you're no Sonic fan, which is perfectly fine and doesn't disqualify you from making a review of the games, but your comparisons and dissection of the game play is incredibly frustrating to me. You scoff at the trial and error nature of the original genesis games but praise Sonic R for doing largely the same. Sure they didn't have easily accessible stage selections but they were there beneath cheat codes, and though I wasn't alive in the early 90's it seems like a lot of people knew about them. Sonic R let you determine your own path, and the genesis games did much the same through layered platforming that rewarded you with less obstacles and frequent opportunities to build momentum/speed the higher up you went.
I love Sonic CD for its environment and unique qualities, but calling Sonic 3 a "step down" isn't an opinion you're likely to hear repeated. CD had loads of dead ends, funky obstacles and was marred by the time travel gimmick that forced the developers to include long empty sections to reach proper speed. The time trial mode was also only included in the 2011 remake and not the original (although a cheat code was present like in the other games), so I really don't see how that's a fair comparison.
I won't argue with the crusty 90's attitude, declining sales, SEGA's incompetence, but if you're going to do a Sonic video today you really ought to do your research first. It almost seems that you're being purposefully contrarian at times, which is fine but it should be supported with proper explanations.
TL;DR This video felt lazy and at its lowest contradictory in its points. Sonic isn't perfect, the games have some huge flaws, but complaining about not having the patience to replay the genesis levels but going on to hold record times in Sonic R just because a stage select is present is UNBELIEVABLY confusing. I mean no harm, it just bothered me and I wanted to voice my opinion.
Guess he loves the Sonic 3D Blast re-make mod, since that has Stage Select AND Trial Mode.

A small nitpick: Time Trial mode is in the original Sonic CD. That's how you unlocked stuff like the DA Garden and Visual Mode.
@@robertanderson9447 I didn't know that. I remember in the '93 version you can use a cheat code on the title screen for sound test and stage select but I have no recollection of time trial. Was it unlocked with one of the secret sound test codes?

Honestly, I'd have to disagree with parts of this, especially the parts about Adventure. From what I've heard, the Adventure games were played by people in and out of the Sonic fandom when first released. Sure, there were conflicting opinions about the gameplay and plots, but people enjoyed them overall. I'm someone who doesn't particularly like the first Adventure at all, but to disregard just how well-received it was at the time is slightly unfair.

I have to disagree about Sonic CD being "the peak of classic Sonic"... The level design de-emphasizes speed in the most annoying ways possible, the time travel mechanic is underutilized and underwhelming, and the levels lack personality (they feel like mosaic art pieces, rather than places in a cartoonish fantasy world). Compare to Sonic 3, where the better, more streamlined level design in Sonic 2 was pushed to its limit, the levels feel like actual interesting places, the game's massive scope (the level transitions do a LOT of work in this regard, especially counting S3&K), and the simple but engaging plot that's presented with silent-proto cut scenes.
Edit: Sonic Mania in no way continues off of Sonic CD's legacy... it continues from Sonic 3 MUCH more. I wish you could have elaborated on why you think Mania is more of a successor to CD than 3
Sonic CD's level design also made it harder to discern enemies from regular objects.

This was in my reccomended videos for a long time. I finally watched it, and hey guess what it's exactly what I expected. My comment will be very long and pissy so be warned.
You gloss over every game you talk about, oversimplifying your view of them. For example, Sonic 3. You treated that game with such little respect that it honestly made me upset. Your entire analysis was 7 words: "More roadblocks, water levels, iffy level design."
Let's neglect to mention the unique yet balanced characters, the much improved special stages, the shields that give Sonic an extra ability, the less dickish hazard placement. Or even the faults, like how some levels drag way too long and can feel repetitive, the midbosses being filler most of the time, I could go on. My point is that you didn't try.
The old Sonic games were built with an arcade mindset. There was no time attack because as you said, the expectation was that players would replay *all* the levels over and over to get better at them. This sort of design is seen as outdated nowadays but you have to consider the time period (1991-1992). Besides, Sonic CD and 3 added a save function due to their potential length. I also feel that you need to look past the "speed" part and try to find other merits, like the many secrets and alternate paths hidden in the levels, rewarding both exploration and good gameplay.
You failed to mention Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog, both of which I think would've contributed to your overall point. They are mainline games, especially Shadow.
Sonic R is not as bad as everyone says it is, but I think the issue with calling it the "best" Sonic game is that it lacks substance to make it last. You can easily 100% the game in under an hour, and there's only 5 tracks. Sure there's a time attack, but you'll eventually get sick of just going fast. I like finding the secrets in the Grand Prix, but the speed at which you can get them all ultimately harms the game, as the racing by itself becomes a shallow experience.
And good lord, cut down on the smug snark. Everybody does it, it's super obnoxious and the reason why I avoided this video for so long. I knew it would be in there.
