  • The Yamaha XSR 900 60th Anniversary Edition with it's 847cc triple and neo-retro styling rocked my world when I first saw it. I had to have it. That was 40000 km s and 4 years ago. Watch me break down the maintenance, any problems that I had, and what I think of the bike after owning it for a good amount of time.

    Loved the review. Almost felt like having a conversation. Just got mine 10 days ago, rode it about 350 miles and it's exactly the bike I needed. I'm not a fan of the brakes possibly because I ride track and have much better feedback on my track bike. But the stock tires aren't too bad for the street in my opinion. I did feel the mini tank slapper that one time. I probably need to address the geometry a little bit to fix that if it happens again. Thanks for the video, it was enjoyable to watch.

    • @rrosin
      @rrosin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am curious how you might be able to change the geometry? I've had the bike since 2016 and fear of a tank slapper since the front is so light so often is my only issue with the bike.

    I have the Yoshimura LED turn signals on my XSR900, and they're really nice. I also put on the Competition Werkes fender eliminator on to clean up the tail, and that's made for a very clean and understated look on the rear, plus I got to remove that big hunk of plastic on the back to save a few pounds of weight. I definitely recommend both.

    What an accurate review! Yamaha should hire you, for their sales team. You obviously know what they say, “ A happy costumer, is the best sales person!”. In this case, that’s absolutely true. I got mine this year and I totally agree with all your impressions of the bike. By the way, the ugly signal lights? It’s a commercial swipe from Yamaha , they know that you’re going to spent some more bucks replacing it, and you have the MT’s 09 proper for that!😆 See the tracer? Comes with the same ugly turning lights aplyed...

    I’m 174 cm and 74kg and the ergonomics are spot on, a very comfy bike. The powerful motor is fantastic and has a lot of character with an induction roar like a banshee, The worst thing is the rear shock, it’s far too stiff for my weight. There should be a handlebar mounted switch to toggle between the different info on the dash. The front end gets a little bit twitchy when you let the motor rip.

    What's your thoughts on the new updated 2022 xsr900? The black version is pretty sweet looking just needs gold wheels & gold forks. Bike should haul ass even more now with the new triple with more torque & hp! Also now has cruise & led lights. New dash is ok just wished they kept the round retro style. Ride safe dude.

I’m planning to ride up to Thailand from Singapore, if & when the borders open up & free of Covid. I believe it can. Consumption wise it’s like the GS , maybe cos we tend to rev it more. Nice little review!. I've got the same bike, year and color. I will respectfully disagree on the seat and top end power tho. I find the seat to be pretty hard, and hard on the buttocks after a while. These bikes do pull pretty good to red line, but they don't have a ton of top end. I raced a newer Street Triple RS (just for one example) and I was way ahead for a while but he definitely started creepin up on me. It's been that way with other fast bikes too. These bikes do have STONKIN low and mid rev power tho, GREAT for 0 to 90mph (145k) rippin, and power wheelies on demand.
    These bikes aren't super ideal for a chillaxing lil bop through town (although they'll gladly do it) because they do have a bit of a choppy throttle (and these motors just beg to be revved) but for pure rippin fun, these are at the top of the heap with bikes that have 50+ more hp and cost thousands more. I love this lil rippah!

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you on the power. What I was trying to say is that it is consistent power to the redline. The street triple and the z900 both are a little soft below about 7000rpm, and then you feel a surge come on till redline. As long as you keep those engines boiling at that rpm you’ll pull away from the Yamaha triple. I just find it nice that you don’t need to find a sweet spot in the power band, it’s there all the time. The seat works well in comparison with the other bikes I’ve ridden Also like you said when you consider value, this unit is hard to beat for bang for the buck. Thanks for commenting.

    Great to hear it’s a bullet proof engine. I’m hoping to buy a still brand new limited edition XSR Abarth. It’s a work of art. Yet still the indicators (turn signals) are ugly but I think they do that to try to give it that older look, but not retro, more late 80’s or early 90’s.) Not really an expensive or difficult upgrade that needs to be done. Will be taking the bike to the Ace Cafe on the North Circular A406, the home to cafe racers post WW2. Wondering if you’ve seen or ridden the Abarth version? As a rider of 37 years I have only just recently discovered TH-cam motorcycle channels. Don’t ask. Yes, Ive lived under a rock for 20 years. Was writing a book in my spare time (teacher, 4 kids and a precious white attack cat) and only came back to biking 5 years ago. I ride a British Racing Green Bonneville, one of the first 5 geared versions to roll off the UK production line in 2001. Needs a 6th gear so badly. Just about to see 18000 on the clock. Engine bullet proof and I use the whole rev range just avoiding the rev limiter. No rev counter fitted as standard but engine pumps out 70bhp and torque is 40% better than stock. I ride every day all year round (not so cold here in Winter) and the miles are hard as it loves to be revved. No baffles in the exhaust make long tunnels an absolute blast rolling on and off full power. It’s got good get up and go and I’m still waiting for any bike to take me on any roundabout in London. I worked as a London Motorcycle Courier for 7 years so I know the roads very well. That helps. While it doesn’t ride like it’s on rails, the wider bars allow you to haul it around like a 350. I can flip the thing on it’s side and hit the gas knowing any tyre spin means leaning over more to hit the stickier outside edge of the tyre. That took a while to learn. Best handling bike I’ve ridden and used to courier with was the FZ600. Terrible engine, just had to rev the nuts off it in the twisties. That rode like it was on rails. Sure the XSR won’t be any different. Cool channel.

    I agree on the S20's awful tyres especially in the wet. Love my XSR 900 although mine has the Velocity-moto LC900 kit that transforms the looks (rear light, tail end, turn signals, seat extended, side panels, nose fairing and paint) The engine is amazing but I also own the MT10 with the crossplane 4 cylinder motor and that is another step up over the CP3 motor. Great review thanks 👍

  • @bwxmoto
    @bwxmoto 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree! Just a great overall bike. I have over 6k miles on mine now and it's been flawless. I can't see myself ever selling it really.
    Only thing I didn't understand is your comments about the tires. The stock Bridgestone S20s are actually a much stickier and fast wearing compound than the Road 5s. They grip great though, I went to S21s, and now S22s which are all great tires. The only problem is how fast they wear out.
    Maybe I'll try some touring tires next but they won't grip as much as the stock Bridgstones or the S21s, or S22s, but they will last way longer which will be refreshing!

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BWX it’s not so much the brand of tire, it’s the fact that the ones that come with the bike aren’t even from the same factory as their replacements. The biggest difference was on my Tracer 900gt which would step out sideways every time I accelerated hard out of a corner. I don’t think others would have noticed as what I was doing was pretty extreme. I do agree that the pilots are not hugely sticky, but they are sticky enough, predictable, and last close to 20000 kms under my style of riding. A lot of other tires, I’m lucky to get half that. When you do over 10k per year that cost really adds up.

    • @bwxmoto
      @bwxmoto 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      sixthisoverdrive oh yeah the stock vs retail difference. I think the ones I got were like tue retail tires. The S21 and S22 are really nice, but wear quickly. I may have to try some touring tires someday. Everyone says they are great for the road.

    • @douglasalexander4348
      @douglasalexander4348 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      BWX. You don’t need grippier tyres than pilots. They warm up quicker than s22, better in damp and wet, a lot more feel in corners and last for ages which saves £££. Never had a tyre which did all those things before, it was always a trade off.

    • @bwxmoto
      @bwxmoto 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only issue really for me is that the Pilots are more than 2x the cost of S22s. I can get a set of S22s for like $200 and get them installed for free. S22s are definitely still have more grip for me, I ride mostly on nice dry warm days. 🤷‍♂️ But I am curious about the Pilots for sure. Maybe next time!

    • @douglasalexander4348
      @douglasalexander4348 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bwxmoto I hear you. But pilots last a lot longer, so in the long run they work out, But yeh, s22 are better than stock if money’s tight. Sixth is right about the stock tyres being adequate at best, I felt a big difference on changing.

      Borislav NT if you look in the background that’s a Tracer gt behind me. You can do everything that you want to do on the XSR except the 2up riding. No one is comfortable on that back seat. Fuel range is another issue. There is easily a 70 to 80 km difference between the 2 bikes. Just get both like me!

      @@sixthisoverdrive Yes, I am watching your videos and I know that you own both models. That's the reason why I think you are the right person to help me with my dilemma. So basically now after your reply it is not which one but which one FIRST to buy. :D

    My complaints about this bike: The key is in an awkward spot and other keys on the keyring get jammed against the triple clamp, the range is only around 115 miles, the buttons on the display dont have a tactile response and are kinda mushy, the tail fender is hideous, the tank cover is aluminum so magnetic tank bags dont work, and the seat cowl is sinfully expensive. These are just nitpicks though. Would I buy it again? No, but not because any fault with the bike. There are so many motorcycles out there it seems foolish to buy the same machine twice. However, I will absolutely recommend this bike to anyone who rides. It is phenomenal.

      Boaty McBoatface I have 2 bikes, and so I think I’ll keep the XSR to tune and spec it out. If I buy new bikes they will be a little more tour friendly. Thanks for watching.

      CSI AUTO DETAIL I have not. Now that I have the Tracer I am putting less miles on The XSR, and most of them are close to home. I’m listening for valve issues and none seem to be apparent. It’s quite an expensive adjustment.

      @@sixthisoverdrive LOL. It was a good video. I recently got out of litre sportbikes for road use because of lack of comfort and that 180-200bhp issue they have! Was recommended one of these and as soon as I rode it? Wow!!! That off idle-4,000rpm torque is bonkers! It honestly does not have to be revved and is very similar to the Retro Z900RS Kawasaki but far more nimble and is better engineered. The build quality is Yamaha at it's best Made in Japan standard I've ever seen. I picked up a 2020 with 7,200KM's on it and got their dynamic white/red "heritage" version and it's stunning. Like you? After riding motorcycles since I was 7 years old and now at 64 years old, this is absolutely the finest motorcycle I've ever ridden. I cannot fault it and in Australia we get clear lens smaller indicators but incandescent as is the headlamp however I already swapped them out for LED replacements which work perfectly. I only briefly looked at the MT 09 but disliked the transformer kiddy look. These are definitely the classier alternative. Another huge advantage is that most people including the delightful Police officers appear to think it's anywhere from a 300cc learners to "maybe" a 500cc. They are amazed when I tell them it's an 850cc CP3 triple. The engine? Look at Yamaha's specs. Stainless coated valve stems and carburized heads, linerless Inosate treated bores, forged pistons and fracture split conrods as fitted to R1's. I could go on and on. It's AMAZING!!!!!!!!! Subscribed from Australia.

    You should invest in a better pipe try hindle its a full systeme only 800$ from the headers to the muffler.... you will regret not doing it when you bought the bike.it's gonna roar not vomit like it's currently doing.

    • @sixthisoverdrive
      @sixthisoverdrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't heard it vomit yet. lol Once I got the air fuel, it runs quite well. Same gas mileage, runs exactly the same speeds as my buddies MT 09, and that bike's a bit lighter. If I lost anything, it might have been bottom end, but I still have trouble keeping the front wheel down. If you heard it in real life, you would get a better idea of just how great it sounds.
