The IV really is the workhorse of SEPTA nowadays. Just a sturdy, reliable train that's coming on 50 years old. Will be a little bit of a bummer to see them go someday, but they still clearly have plenty of life left in them!
I quite like the sound of these units' horns. They sound extremely similar to those fitted to the DFT and DC class diesel locomotives we have in New Zealand. I've noticed that the M7's on the Long Island Railroad also have a similar horn to these Septa units.

Usually the West Trenton has mainly IVs but they do switch cars around on occasion. and yes I've heard some foul S2Ms before, The reason some squeal is because of a leak in the horn diaphragm causing the air to force through that leak and creates that high pitched screech.
I see. By Trenton Line I meant TTC (NEC). Its also weird because the Trenton and CHE line trainnsets run exclusively on those routes for most of the day on the weekends, and yet all the outbound TTC trains are IV's ;).

Unfortunately they won't. The FRA has tightened crashworthiness standards and has mandated vestibules out of MUs and no door on the engineer's side of a cab car. So they'll look more like the SL-Vs or LIRR/MN M3s on up.

They are located just above the axles and coupling if I remember correctly although you can't see the horn itself unless you were up close to the front of the car and looked hard in the lower part of the front.

Your not alone. Some crews and passengers prefer the Vs and some prefer the IVs. I like the IVs due to the nostalgia, horns, and ride but the Vs have automatic announcements, nice horns, and don't usually have smelly burning dynamics like some IVs

The only reason why the Vs had a manufacturing defect was because SEPTA took the lowest entered bid for the V contract. Bombardier submitted a more expensive bid, but SEPTA turned them down for the cheaper option (Hyundai Rotem). If SEPTA wasn’t cheap they wouldn’t have gotten a defective product. SEPTA also went with Hyundai Rotem to manufacture the double level passenger cars for the push-pull engines. I don’t think SEPTA learned their lesson.
I know you grew up with SEPTA and its your fav commuter line and I mean no offense. But personally don’t like SEPTA because I think that the coloring of the cars are lazy. Like 95% of the cars are unpainted. I didn’t mean to offend any SEPTA fan out there it’s just my opinion and if that had offended a few people I’m sorry.
Well not exactly. Some Vs and Comet cars get advertisements plastered onto the sides and I don't think they're mostly unpainted with the exception of the IVs because of their rough retro build you'd see on train cars from the 60s and 70s.
They don't paint the steel because that makes them easier to clean and maintain by having less to paint or clean up. And trust me, they look better in plain steel than painted.

I remember when I visited Philadelphia, I saw 17 Septa trains at 30th Street station. And only 3 Silverliner V we’re there!

SL-VI will be a regular EMU, not a double deck car. The double deck cars from CRRC will not have a Silverliner designation.

I think it's worse on the IVs due to age and other things that are falling apart
