- I this woodworking video I share with you the top 5 woods that I work with everyday in the workshop. These five woods are the wood types that I use the most often in the shop for cabinets, trim and fine furniture builds. Each wood has its own special characteristics that make it the right wood for the right project.
Understanding the best wood type to use for your next woodworking project will make all of the difference in how your next build turns out.

Jon, please do continue with your training type videos. As an old retired guy only a few years into woodworking, I really appreciate your whole approach and friendly manner. You have given me a lot of great ideas and allowed me to avoid some dumb mistakes. I always look forward to your videos.
Thanks Fred! Glad to hear it 👍
you all prolly dont care at all but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an instagram account??
I stupidly lost my account password. I love any help you can give me
@Alfonso Lucas Instablaster :)
@Davion Dean I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Davion Dean it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out!
Man I could watch finish being put on walnut all day, nice video very informative.
Good tips Jon. Thanks. Made some floating frames using your video as a helper and the client loved them. Thanks for what you do.!
I love using Waterlox as a finish
Plum is probably the nicest I worked with..speckles of violet and amazing color.
As an educator, I love how you explain things. Excellent and easy to follow and understand.
Your furniture is beautiful, Jon. You are truly an artist, who works in wood. Thank you for your fine video work, and for sharing your shop time with us. Skip Hall, Suffolk, Va.
I love seeing finished wood and watching the grain just pop out like that
Nice explanation of the wood. Hands down, my favorite part of the woodworking process is the moment you add the finish to the wood. I just love how the wood transforms into a work of art! Thanks for the demonstration!
Nice work, Jon.
Great video, Jon! Walnut and cherry are two of my favorites. I love the rich, warm look of both of them.
Thank you so much. I appreciate how clear and concise you are in making a point. Just discovered Waterlox and I wanted to use it on a unfinished spinning wheel made of walnut wood. I don’t like the darker color so I wanted a clear finish.
A big bloxygen fan here, Jon. I also really like using poplar for my furniture builds, I love the sap wood look and poplar generally has plenty of it.
Thank you Steve!
Awesome, Steve. Thank you!
I very much agree that Sapele has become the new Mahogany. Doing fine carpentry, to this day, still am amazed at how well Poplar can milled. Not only can it hold an edge, it paints (and even stains) great. Great video.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge Jon
Thanks for including some of the furniture you’ve made over the years...just beautiful!
Thanks for all the wonderful videos, Jon!
Always appreciate your input Jon. I loved the finish on each of those boards. Sepele was very striking. Thanks again Jon.
I have been wanting to limit myself to a few different woods to work with in my shop. Your video has given me the needed direction. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks Mike!
Great video Jon!
Bloxygen tip is gold! My Waterlox went bad after using it for our cherry countertops. Thank you!!
Great stuff!
Your videos are very informative and this particular one is perfect timing for where I'm at in my woodworking progression

Great information, as usual, Jon. Thanks!
Very useful and timely video as I am about to build some children's bedroom furniture.
Very informative. I’d love to see you work with some more exotic woods in the future!
I just completed a custom closet project with poplar used with a polyurethane finish. I think you can find some beautiful boards to make great aesthetic contrasts with poplar. It’s not just good to paint over only.
@will to fight I did my finish with polyurethane with a high gloss. With a great color pattern to the grain, it can be a showpiece for your woodwork.
I just now started using poplar. My projects were a disaster using th “70% off “ wood from the big box stores.. I don’t have planer either so my doors were not aligning. Now I’m gonna use S4S poplar! Thanks Jon. You should ask Santa for a planer! And build a small shop that connects to your existing sho for more room.
I personally don't have a proper shop at all, and I ended up wasting lots of money purchasing wood that was s4s and kiln dried: I had to find someone with a planer and table saw anyway to re saw them straight!
Great info. I love white oak as well...I am planning on building a tool cabinet sometime with it.
Thanks, Jon
Great job Jon.
Thanks Jon, great video!
Thanks Jon! I like the same woods but use Mahogany instead of Sepele and also enjoy working with Maple. On a side note, I got some Ipe last year that had been discarded by a contractor. It is not easy to work with but I was amazed at the dark rich brown after finishing.
You know, Jon if this had been a silent video just long enough to show the wipe-on and can - the Waterlox would have sold itself! Thanks for the wood info and that Bloxygen product.
👍👍 thanks Keith
Jon, Great video and very interesting on your selections of wood. I’ve see a lot of your videos for years and known about how you like them but knowing why was informative!
Using Waterlox on 2nd project now and I’m sold. Looks great. Also ordered some bloxygen to give a shot. Thanks for the info here.
Really helpful video Jon! Pine and white oak have been my go to woods for the last few years as not the same amount of hardwood options in UK home stores. Starting to explore more hardwood timber yards and excited to incorporate sapele in a project soon
Great video and information, Jon.
Very helpful and very informative video. Thanks!

Keep it up, Jon.
Very informative, thank you. Along this line, maybe top 5 woods for year round outdoors (especially for northern Minnesota). A bit tired of cedar and looking for other options that can withstand our winters. 🥶
thermally modified poplar. Looks like walnut, but its made for outdoors
This was a very helpful informative video on wood choices Jon! Thank you for sharing !
Glad to hear it. Thanks Keith!
Very informative video, there is always something new to learn in every of your videos.
absolutely love watching your vids. so many tips and great info. thanks for sharing
Terrific video Jon! My favorite wood is Sapele followed by Maple, Walnut & Purpleheart. Also many species of exotic woods.
Thanks Steve, all beautiful woods! I’m actually thinking about building a piece in purple hart next year.
Good stuff as always! Thanks, Jon!
Thank you for a very educational video as always. 🙂
Very helpful video, thanks Jon.
Great vid.
Great information, learned some new information. Thanks
Another plus for those woods is how well they machine. If you’ve ever run hard maple or hickory over a jointer you’re know what I mean. I do find QSWO can be tricky though.
Nice video Jon! Thank you for sharing it with us.👌👍😎JP
Thank you for this great video
Thanks !
I've watched a few of your video's. Dam thats a clean shop!
Cherry is a wood that I love to mix with Maple -- I really like the contrast that brings. So I might have a cherry top, with maple legs, for example.
Great video!
Excellent
White oak is my favorite wood to work with.
Great info! Thanks Jon.
My local lumber place is selling thermally modified poplar for outside projects. It looks a lot like Peruvian walnut. They told me that some woodworkers are starting to use it for furniture. I'm thinking of giving it a try. Something to think about....
It’s pretty cool stuff I’ve used it on one or two projects.... it does sometimes seem a little brittle and splits easily.
Really like the look of sapele
Hi Jon,
Big fan and a long time follower. I am looking for a used planer now for my small shop;. A friend gave me a ton of rough sawn yellow pine that has been in his barn for over 20 years. I cannot wait to see how it cleans up. Cheers, Rick
thanks for the tips! great video
I saw you build something out of sapele a few years ago and have been hooked ever since. I also only buy s4s because of constraints, and it's one of the few varieties they have as s4s at my local hardwood dealer. Love your channel!
Thanks!
Very informative! I wonder if you'd consider a followup episode to show how the woods' colors progressed over time. Maybe cut the boards in half, leaving half in the sun, and the others in the dark. Really love your videos!
Thanks that was very educational for me. Appreciate it...
You have access to world woods yeah ?, try out Australian Blackwood, Redgum, Black hearted Sassafras & Jarrah if ya get a chance pal & whilst not typical of big box stores it’s something you’ll like I’m sure, cheers Cobber
Gracias! a tu video👍. Demonios construiste las mesas hermosas y lujosos!
Hi Jon. My favourite wood worker 100% thanks for all your videos. You should treat yourself to a new thickness planer too. I remember a couple of years back you talked about a new table saw too. Well deserved. Cheers
Thanks Mike! Maybe this year 👍 Cheers
@@JonPetersArtHome you got me into woodworking after loosing my job in oil industry when I got Lyme disease in 2013 it's been the best most enjoyable thing to focus on and was thanks to your videos Jon so thank you. You may not have the most subscribers but I think the ones you have think your the best .
Thanks again Mike! And sorry to hear about your lime disease.... I had lime in 2006 but treated quickly with antibiotics. I got lucky and was only down for about 3 weeks. Lime diseases is serious! Hope your feeling better and I’m glad to hear that my videos are helpful. Thanks again, Jon
@@JonPetersArtHome thanks jon. Its a nasty disease i wasnt diagnosed for 2 years so it hasnt and isnt an easy fix now. You keep being you and im sure the subscribers will come. Your a big inspiration to me so thank you.
I usually use walnut, cherry, maple and red oak and have been pleased with all. My only issue with the red oak is the open grain which I then have to use grain filler.
Hai Jon nice videos and very useful
Um where did Jon go! Haha nice video agree with your choices!
Commented! & Liked! 👍 you’re offering the best ( hands down ) videos for woodworking! Channels like yours should get more “push” from TH-cam. Thanks !!
Noticed Maple was left out, as others mentioned as well? I've been using it on several projects lately and especially enjoy finding those harder varieties and have been going with the oiled finishes to keep that lighter colored look. Great videos as always. Thx.
Thanks for this. Im designing a guitar speaker cabinet, and going to use a somewhat natural finish.
Very, very, very cool video Jon.!!! And... you're always teaching me something. Now, that I'm slowing down I'll finally be able to get you some pics. of the inside of the house for some ideas. Still dying to see the inside of yours (hint, hint). I bet the trim work in there is Stupid Dope Fresh!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!
Sepele, walnut, cherry are my favorite to work with.
Thank you 🙏🏽!
That was a nice grain match on the cherry table
Sapele is exceptionally straight, in this category the absolute top.
I am planning to build something with maple. I am planning to bleach then clear coat , add tiny amount of blue tint.
Blue tint hopefully prevent future amber hue. Perhaps a bit of white wash.
thanks from California
Thanks Jon 🤗
😎👍☘🍺
I recently built a gate for my daughter out of 8/4 Sapele. When I finished it no one wanted to paint it because the wood was so beautiful. However my daughter really wanted the gate to match her color scheme in the front of the house. After researching finishes for outdoor gates i said paint it. Everyone loves it and it will last a long time
Painting sapele 🤢
This really helped me, thanks!
I'm guilty of lacking in the comment section. Always watching but not always commenting. I'll try to get more comments and likes your way Jon. Still enjoying and admiring the content you create after many years of watching. The wife has been asking me for a shoe rack too so I can't wait for that vid to come
Thanks Anthony 👍
My favorites are: Walnut, White Oak, Maple (Wormy & Curly), and Spalted Sycamore.
Another informative video! :)
We're lucky here - the only easy-to-get options are white oak or white pine - great options for most projects. I did manage to get some poplar before Masters went out of business, which I enjoyed using. Haven't been able to find it anywhere since though. I do wish we could get good quality plywood though.
Jon - there's a Sepele kitchen table in my future thanks to you!
Awesome!
Informative video. I need to find a store that sells lumber like this. The only thing close is the big box stores and a few construction type lumber yards, and woodcraft but.
Great info
graet vidio, like the way you take the time to explain how to do it correctly. what would you recomend fo a table top for a dining room.
Really great! I'm a big fan of Waterlox as well. Have you ever attempted to age cherry with oven cleaner? I gave it a try after seeing a couple of videos on it and it actually worked pretty great. I haven't applied finish yet but in seconds, I got it to a really gorgeous colour. Doesn't seem to be that common a technique (I only just heard about it myself) but it seems to work really well.
Cherry is hard to beat
I’m going to be making a memorial plaque soon and I chose sapele because ever since I first saw it on your channel I’ve wanted to make something out of it. I think I might try Waterlox for the finish, I’ve never used high end finish before and I’m curious to see the difference.
I’ve never used sapele, but it looks like it has a lot of depth to it
Kenerson_CC I use it quite a bit, sometimes you can find it highly figured and it becomes almost holographic... especially with deep finish like 7-8 coats of lacquer or shellac.
Thanks, Jon! This is so helpful. What do you think of maple?
👋🏼Hello can you do a video mahogany vs Parota and other wood.
What’s your take on maple?
If I was going to make little picnic style table. Would it be best to use oak? I know nothing about wood.
Instead of painting poplar wood, can you put a stain on it instead? How would that turn out?
Cant believe you don’t own a thickness planer🙀 I never realized it in any of your videos
