Again, great content, Rachel :D Not only have you been a great motivation for me to practice my guitar more, but you have been an inspiration for me to record myself and make a own yt channel, to lock back in a few years and hopefully see my progress. Also I made the experience, that learning a song by ear and videos of the artist is really more helpful. I used tons of tabs when I started learning the guitar, only to see that so many of them are wrong. Learning by ear is super challenging, but more rewarding.
Awesome to see another Q&A vid! Love your detailed responses. Too bad I didn't get around to asking one this time but I'll be sure to make up for it in the next one. Amazing positive energy as usual and keep up all the great work!
Rachelf, just wanted to let you know I love your videos and I always look forward to them. You are so inspiring especially during this difficult time. Keep up the good work!
Your so talented! Your happiness and energy are really infectious, your a massive inspiration to me as I'm just learning guitar and I hope I can be as good as you one day, love from England!
LOVE your positive attitude and great spirit! Good luck on your journey! remember stay away from all drugs, alcohol and avoid negative people. That will help you get far in your musical career. Protect your soul and be well. Cheers.
Thank you for another helpful Q & A, always look forward to your take on these topics. I have been at my guitar journey for almost a year now and your videos are always inspiring and help motivate me, thanks!!
You are such an awesome person. Keep rocking, can’t wait to see how incredible of a player you will have become 10 years from now, you’re already excellent. Thank you for being such a source of authentic inspiration for so many people, including me too. I thank you for the challenge and friendliness you have helped me embrace with my own growing practicing and playing. Hope many awesome things continue to come your way, keep rocking and learning girl!!🎸⚡️⚡️🙂
Thanks for the great video. Keep them coming! Love all you do and that you're always smiling. Your smile is always so comforting and forces me to smile along with you. Thank you. =) Hope all is healthy and safe in your world.
One band that I recommend for learning stuff on a 7 string is Trivium. They do have challenging songs, but the songs are also easy for repetition and learning really good riffs. Catastrophist is one I'm working on right now, and it is a lot of fun to do
4:25 I totally relate. It will take someone years to get good with the fundamentals, and at least a month to really nail down a song and sound clean on record. Good job with your instrument! Been watching you get better since year one :) really inspiring
Keep up the good work young lady.. Every time I watch one of your videos it truly inspires me to put that extra effort in to get just a bit better.... keep smiling too... :)... you're parents did good 👍
When it comes to learning new instruments alongside the guitar I personally would recommend Keyboards. Midi keyboards can be super cheap and aside from being able to record bass and drums behind your guitar, you have access to thousands of different instruments through software and you can obviously learn piano as well. That's how I got so interested in synthesizers despite being a guitarist myself and now I have a real synthesizer and can't get enough of it 😅😅😅
I did that...bought a stage piano and learned to play it beside guitar. It was really frustrating at the beginning, when suddenly your right hand fingers have to do more work than just holding a pick. But it's super helpful to create music and learn music theory. I use it for piano, drum midis, or as synth as well (thx to ezkeys) Only bad thing..my music room is now even smaller because of it :D
I am 54 and have been playing for most of the past 40 years. The last few years not so much and have been trying to find motivation to make more time. I guess that's why I came across your 4 year progress video. I like the idea of recording my practices and showing progress. Another thing that I find interesting is your take on acoustic versus electric. I like just about everything, but have not always been able to keep both around. I have my baby, an Ibanez Artwood 12 string that I bought back in 1985 that has been my constant companion since. Being limited to only an acoustic makes for some interesting finds. When One first came out, I began learning it on the 12 string. I never went past the intro though. All that to say - I am going to relearn that, on 12 string, and do some phone videos of my progress. So thanks for the inspiration! I also wonder if the outcome may interest you from the metal/folk, electric/acoustic viewpoint. I am committing to posting each week starting next Tuesday. (That's not so much for you, but to hold me accountable to myself.) Thanks again for the inspiration!
First of all, I'd like to thank you, Rachel, for giving me tons of motivation to start playing guitar from your videos of "X years of progress" and so on. You're really great at what you do! :D Second of all, I'd like to share a beginner trick to learn songs easier/faster. The way I learn new songs is, prepare yourselves, by playing Rocksmith. Yes, you might think it's ridiculous and stuff... but it actually works. I had my first electric guitar on October last year, and I couldn't really play songs... only riffs, barely. All of this changed after I've bought Rocksmith in March this year. I mean it was hard to keep up with the incoming notes from the game, but now I can play songs from Three Days Grace with EASE, without even looking at the screen (such as "Animal I have become" or "Never too late")... "Breaking Benjamin - Blow me Away" as well. I really can't recommend this game enough: -There's even lessons with videos in the game - from how to hold your guitar, to alternate picking and many more; -The song you want to learn, starts slowly with less notes for you to play. At the end of each session, you get a "feedback / score" for how you've played, with a progress percentage. The more of that percentage you accumulate, the faster the song's gonna be and the more notes you'll have to play... until you've completely mastered the song yourself; -You have an in-game tuner for your guitar! The game makes sure your guitar is on the right tune before playing each song, and it shows you if your string is set too high or too low; -You have arcade games that makes the whole techniques learning process way more enjoyable; -You have "Session Mode", in which you just freestyle with your guitar and make your own songs if you want to. You can even add background instruments while you play your guitar, such as drums, bass... banjo, kazoo xd; -You have Multiplayer, in case you want to play with friends; -If you can't find your favourite song on the list in-game, you can go on some websites and download it yourself! You can add pretty much any song to the game. You should give it a shot if you're a beginner like me! You'll see improvement very fast.
a 7 string song to learn would be "Consume" by polaris. the techniques involved are difficult, but when you get the hang of it, it feels so good to play
I think I caught the most important thing in your progression : FUN :-) And I totally agree with you on that. I'm only in my 6th month of learning, but I proceed just as you do : Try to play little pieces of songs I like, not full tracks for the moment, and it's really rewarding to be able to do it, even if it's not perfect. The most important is the pleasure you have, it prevents motivation from going away !! Thank you for your video ! PS : I can see "Human. :||: Nature." behind you. Try to learn "Pan", so that you can help Emppu during next tour, he's afraid of totally messing it up on stage :-D
Let me know when you are coming to Japan next time. I know some nice sushi places. Thanks for the video! It’s raining today so can get a few good practice hours
Just thought that I would ad the Ibanez SA260FM as a good beginner guitar. I bought one as my first guitar and it was not too expensive and lots of people comment on how nice it is and I am using it for all of my videos. It is a great first purchase for an electric six string.
Excellent video. I like your approach with learning songs by using your ear and TH-cam videos and avoiding tabs. I picked up a Yamaha amp a few months ago and love it. Looking forward to more of your content. Keep rockin'! 🎸🎸🤘🤘

Hey rachelf, do you think you can cover run to the hills? Also, for your 7 string, you could do supremecy by muse, that's got the 7tg string dropped to a and is a mint song! Thanks from England! Stay safe!
Battle Beast, and Beast in Black are awesome. I think we are musical soulmates! And I think Ghost's Dance Macabre is a fantastic beginner's song because, as you said, the solo is a perfect mix of technical, yet not too hard. Keep Rockin'! You are an inspiration!

I really wanted to learn how to play, coz this is the talent that i never had.😉 But now gonna watch all ur vids to keep me GO for it 😊 somedayyyyy. . . ill have Elec.guitar and Amp 💪💪
Hi Rachel. I know you already did a video on "how to record a cover" and I would like to know some more technical details, if it is possible! The original song contains all the instruments and voice? How do you balance your guitar with the one from the original track because I can hear fine the original track (voice, drums, bass, etc), except the original guitar which is replaced by yours? It is nice how you manage to "mute" only the original guitar and make yours blend in the original song! From where do you get the backing tracks? How do you deal with the copyright? Thanks
On seven string you could learn some Sonata Arctica, nobody on TH-cam to my knowledge has played Flag in the ground with a seven string (like Elias). The solo is quite hard though.
Hello Rachel. Love your videos (and your never ending smile). I learned how to "play" the guitar several years ago, the chords, little arpeggios, but nothing more, i got stuck and quitted. I saw some of your videos and reignited the flame that was out for a long time and now i am re learning, but seriously this time. I have seen some videos about, websites and such for the pentatonics, but while they are kind of similar, they dont match the initial fret where they start, or the shapes vary, and Im a little confuses. Can you make a video of some basic pentatonic shapes to begin practicing? Thank you. You bring joy to the world with that smile, never stop doing it.
Hey Rachel love the video. I think trying your hand at keyboards would be super cool! There's still plenty of time to learn before Halloween - that'll give you a great excuse to release a video playing keys dressed up like a Ghoulette. :) Great channel keep it up!
You should learn The Enemy Inside and/or Paralyzed by the progressive metal band Dream Theater. They both are seven string based. And very awesome songs.
Not at all, on the contrary you won't be bothered when you have to replace your strings and with tuning stability as a beginner it is ideal and with time you can make up for these crazy tricks with other left hand technics (if you're right handed). You won't just be able to do dive bombs but it is not relevant ^^
You definitely don't need a whammy. I would even say it would be better to get a guitar with fixed bridge rather than the tremolo. Fixed bridge is easier to change strings and set up, and also it stays in tune better than tremolo. Especially in cheaper guitars tremolos and floyd rose bridges are often really bad and don't stay in tune
+1 on the other responses, unless you really want a whammy bar it would be better to get a fixed bridge first as they're much easier to restring and change tunings!
Do you ever watch Steve Stine Guitar Lesson or his other channel Guitarzoom. I feel his one of the best guitar teachers on TH-cam right now. His teaching style has really help this older dude. Cheers.......love your cheerful smile.
Rachel thanks to you I’ve been playing guitar for 10 months, and, I’m now in a band with my friends! Thank you for being such a legendary person and inspiring me! P.S. Can you by chance cover Home Sweet Home by Mötley Crüe?
The twelve people who disliked this video were the people who didn't win the 7-string guitar. Hi Rachel. I just stumbled onto your channel and love the content. Admittedly, I saw the thumbnail with your RG652-AHM and thought,"That lady has great taste in guitars"....since I have the RG421-AHM, which looks identical but doesn't have the Gibraltar bridge or DiMarzio pickups...but my pickups are "hot" enough for me to play metal. Anyways...keep rockin! :-)
That's true! They do often use 7 strings. Previously I hadn't been able to cover their songs because I felt they wouldn't work as well without vocals, but potentially I could do some instrumentals playing the vocal line now :)
You are the reason i started playing guitar 9 months ago, thank you Rachel.
So cool to hear that! Hope you are having a great time with it so far!
I've wanted to play since i was 15 but giving where i live no one bought me a guitar.
I gave up later on buying one because i thought it was too late to. Learn then i saw Rachel.

When it comes to learning new instruments alongside the guitar I personally would recommend Keyboards. First of all, I'd like to thank you, Rachel, for giving me tons of motivation to start playing guitar from your videos of "X years of progress" and so on. You're really great at what you do! :D
Second of all, I'd like to share a beginner trick to learn songs easier/faster. The way I learn new songs is, prepare yourselves, by playing Rocksmith. Yes, you might think it's ridiculous and stuff... but it actually works. I had my first electric guitar on October last year, and I couldn't really play songs... only riffs, barely.

i can play electric funeral and you should maybe try to play it because it's epic
Do i need a whammy bar for my first electric guitar? I want to play metallica and that ibanez is awesome
Thanks to everyone, ill buy the ibanez and a cheap harley benton amp when i can
Rachel I see you like Nightwish seen the album behind you occasionally. You should play their song Planet Hell it's pretty cool.
You should try a Sterling Music Man MAJ100 ICR John Petrucci signature, they feel amazing
She won't ever stop smiling. She's pretty 😍
Do you ever watch Steve Stine Guitar Lesson or his other channel Guitarzoom. I feel his one of the best guitar teachers on TH-cam right now. His teaching style has really help this older dude. Cheers.......love your cheerful smile.
Hey Rachel what is your favorite guitar 🎸
Rachel thanks to you I’ve been playing guitar for 10 months, and, I’m now in a band with my friends! Thank you for being such a legendary person and inspiring me! P.S. Can you by chance cover Home Sweet Home by Mötley Crüe?
I would love an album. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✨
Where are you from Rachel?💛 You inspire me. I love your videos!
Do Aerials!! 🎸🎸🔥🔥🙏🙏
Hey. What's your favorite nightwish album?
The twelve people who disliked this video were the people who didn't win the 7-string guitar.
Hi Rachel. I just stumbled onto your channel and love the content. Admittedly, I saw the thumbnail with your RG652-AHM and thought,"That lady has great taste in guitars"....since I have the RG421-AHM, which looks identical but doesn't have the Gibraltar bridge or DiMarzio pickups...but my pickups are "hot" enough for me to play metal.
Anyways...keep rockin! :-)
I’ve often seen you wear an epica or an within temptation t-shirt both of those bands use 7 strings guitars
That's true! They do often use 7 strings. Previously I hadn't been able to cover their songs because I felt they wouldn't work as well without vocals, but potentially I could do some instrumentals playing the vocal line now :)
Rachelf you could check out ruuds jolie youtube channel he plays with within temptation but he also uploads videos on how to play the guitar stuff
Would you ever consider doing tutorials? I think you'd do really good ones
I've done a couple lesson videos, would like to do more! Thanks :)
Struggling in improving my guitar playing need some suggestions
@@jorgeharoo Thank you 🙂🤘🎸
