    NOTE: In Sutherland's autobiography "A Prima Donna's Progress" (p. 416) - Joan Sutherland referred to Leyla Gencer, as "that extraordinary Turkish soprano" .... So whatever rivalries may have existed, I think that great artists acknowledge each other and respect each other. After all, many a soprano d'agilita' stopped singing the role of Lucia after Joan sang it to such world-shattering success in 1959.
    Please! Both Joan and Leyla are now gone ...let's honor them both, as they so deserve!

      @@tencontento9177 Thank you so! I met them both ...and I love them both! Granted - I am in mostly in to belcanto operas, - but in addition to Callas and Caballe, Sutherland and Gencer are my "go-to " artists in whatever opera they ever recorded... No one today can equal their combined stature....

    Beyond a doubt, this is one of the most amazing stage performances that has ever been recorded! Unbelievable acting from Gencer who completely owns this role (and many others). She is shockingly unknown to many, but a complete Goddess for the ones who had the privilege to hear her..

    • @joannilson2900
      @joannilson2900 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank goodness there are so many "pirated" recordings of her perfomances! Her fans were so determined that her performances would be remembered... In later years, she took such great happiness that her pirated recordings had garnered her an entire new generation of fans!! Even though she noted that she "never made any money" from those recordings - her younger generation fans were a joy beyond belief to her!

    The recording is from Florence and was made either in 1966 or -67. A complete CD is available on Living Stage(or at least it was a year ago).
    The cast apart from Gencer are; Elisabetta -Shirley Verret, Roberto-Franco Tagliavini,
    Giorgio- Agosto Ferrin, Cecil-Giulio Fioravanti, Anna-Mafalda Massini.
    Musical director is Franco Molinari-Pradelli.

    YES! Absolutely - -The Greatest!!! The "vil bastarda" that gives you goose bumps and elicits a huge response from the audience. And then that HUGE High D at the end - followed by the equally thunderous response of the Florentine public!!! OMG! I've said it before: Arguably one of the greatest moments of live recorded opera performances in the 20th Century.

  • @operastud82
    @operastud82 15 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Published in one of the Donizetti Journals was a transcription of a masterclass given by Gencer about the 3 Queens and interpreting them. She mentioned how, when confronted with a voice of such power and distinction as Verrett (whom Gencer had great respect and admiration for) she knew she needed to do something unique to keep her dominance as the title character, hence what we hear on "piè!" A truly thrilling performance of a thrilling opera!

The one most readily available from Amazon is Living Stage 2CD B000060P8P. Also one from Myto for much more mony. Living Stage has excellent sound. This was a broadcast and should always be in great sound.

  • @galehout
    @galehout 16 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    il fatto è che qui il direttore e l'interprete lavorano di pari passo, per fare dell'invettiva il momento apicale del dramma (come accadde con i Giudici della Callas in Anna Bolena), dopo il quale nulla sarà come prima. Basta sentire come l'orchestra non solo sottolinea, ma è "complice" di Maria Stuarda che offende in modo sempre più pesante la rivale. La protagonista è ormai lei, si capisce dal colore degli strumenti. Ma per far bene queste cose bisogna CREDERCI...

    Perdona mio Italiano di Brasiliano ma la Verret era capace di cantare un Re acuto. Lei puo cercare la Norma di 1976 a Boston e altre opere como Macbeth. E falsettoe una cosa che non esiste in voce feminille, ma una cosa che gli americani definiscono come "whistle tone" che e quel fil di voce che i soprani sono capace di produrre. Las compañias solian centrarse en promover a unos pocos artistas y procuraban quitarse la competencia. Legge, boss de Voz de su Amo y marido de Schwarzkopf, que además tenia a Callas, detestaba a Gencer y esta, gran carácter; se burlaba de los "silbidos de tren" del canto a la alemana... A veces son muchas las causas que dan lugar a cosas inexplicables. Dónde están los discos que hubieran debido grabar Olivero, Gencer, Tucci, Pobbe, Kraus, Lavirgen... y tantos otros?

      @@mehmet4g63 I don't believe that's true. She actually did record for RAI (Italian Radio) several times (including seleced arias in 1958 and a Martini and Rossi concert performance also in 1958). She also was in a film recording of Don Giovanni (as a magnificent Donna Elvira) with Mario Petri as Don GIovanni and Stich-Randall as Donna Anna in 1961. An "Omaggio" LP was issued by Cetra in 1975 with several of the RAI 1958 recordings as well as new studio recodings from 1974 (recorded with Maestro Gianandrea Gavazzeni). The 3 major opera LP recording companies back in the 1960s (Angel, London/Decca, and RCA) just seemed uninterested in her. Was it because she was Turkish? Was it because they only wanted the up and coming "newer" stars (including Price and Caballe)? Was it because of the rumored relationship with Gavazzeni? Who knows?
      All I'm thrilled is that we have all those pirated recordings of her in over 70 live operatic performances! Even she was amazed at how she had been "re-discovered" by generations of younger "fans"... She called it a miracle - even if she noted that she never got a dime (meglio, una lira) for all of those recordings. She will always be known as the "Queen of the Pirates"!! RIP dear Leyla!! You have made all of our days more beautiful!!

    Florence Maggio Musicale 1967, Verrett as Elizabeth. Isn't Leyla fantastic? The biting tone, majestic exclamation, the held high D... superb! Sills lacked vocal heft and screamed phrases in a higher pitch to avoid low notes, Caballe was also great as Maria Stuarda but lacked the dramatic ferocity. I could never understand a single word Sutherland ever sang so cannot ever, ever consider her a serious stage artist. Gruberova was indeed a joke. All praise the Great Gencer, ladies and gentlemen!

    Mi pare che il personaggio richieda un fraseggio piu` sottile, piu` sibilante che plateale. Anni fa non erano a disposizione piu` di tante registrazioni live, ci si doveva accontentare di quello che veniva promosso dal deus industriae discograficae. Gli accenti della Gencer sono senza dubbio veementi, drammatici e di notevole impatto, ma abbiamo di fronte la Regina degli Scozzesi, adirata senza dubbio, ma lontanissima da facili effetti.

      diciamo che è tutta finzione scritta da Bardari musicata da Donizetti??? nella realtà le due regine non si sono mai incontrate e la Gencer ne fa un capolavoro assoluto!!!! poi tutte la imitarono...

    Wow. two persons share my view that Sutherland was totally inexpressive and incomprehensible (and thus ruled out as a genuine artist) and that Grubby is a joke - clown works too.
    Leyla is one of the best, ever, and the electric relationship she always had with the audience is truely extraordinary. This is the real deal - opera not as verbal knic knack - but as living, throbbing art.

    Amo la Gencer e penso che sia insorpassata come Stuarda e ancor di più in questa scena.
    Detto ciò mi sembra che sia tu Ercole ad essere passato dalla parte dell'incompetente dando delle "techniche inespressive" a 3 mostri sacri come Devia, Sutherland e Gruberova (pur non amando io Edita).
    Il fanatismo sta nel vedere determinate caratteristiche dove non ci sono e nel negare la loro esistenza dove in realtà si trovano.
    La Gencer una coloratura no. Una meravogliosa drammatica d'agilità si.

      rivalità creata da altri, c'era il famoso detto: la Gencer le scopre, la Sills le incide, la Caballé le canta..... prima della Gencer nessun'altra aveva tirato fuori tutte quelle opere di Donizetti, si faceva solo Lucia, Elisir, Don Pasquale e la Bolena della Callas. Leyla Gencer resta l'unica Vera Donizettiana, rispettando quanto scritto!!!! le altre snaturano tutto con quei coccodé, chicchirichì e assurde variazioni....

    Pourquoi Mme Gencer n'a-t-elle pas eu de son vivant une gloire si grandiose que Callas? Personnellement je la préfère a cette dernière et je regrette vivement qu'elle n'ait jamais accepté d'enregistrer en studio.

    genius the Italians themselves named her LA STUPENDA so I don't think they had a problem with her Italian which was VERY clear despite you haters. I understand every word. Gencer is a footnote in the history of opera compared to Dame Joan so live with THAT.

      Sutherland is the one who addicted me to opera! But Gencer is the one who made me feel opera and is my "go-to" soprano for so many roles.
      Most importantly: if Sutherland herself in her autobiography referred to Gencer as "extraordinary" - neither you nor anyone else can call the great Leyla a "footnote in the history of opera"....Dame Joan would be the first one to tell you that your comment is really offensive and without merit.

      Callas once said that music was so "enormous". So if the encyclopedia of classical music was to be published now, i highly doubt sutherland would make the cut even as a footnote. There's Farinelli, Pasta, Viardot, Caruso, Ponselle and Callas way before Sutherland. Have a little respect! Gencer was one hell of a singer. The greatest singers of the century praised her singing.

    ignorant opinion, for starters Callas never sang Maria Stuarda. Second, Dame Joan the Voice of the Century, also known as La Stupenda, could blow Gencer off the stage many times over. Go watch Sutherland live Stuardas here on TH-cam and learn something about being "expressive".
