Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

You may find it interesting that the Black Douglas (know full well it was his name by England lol, but I think its an epic nickname haha) I'm almost convinced was him though its never been named as him. When Ripon back in that century (14th of course) the Wakeman who protected Ripon (formerly Inrhypum in Old English, goes back to the least 650s) during the night from 9pm (is why its the oldest on going ceremony in Europe, without any doubt) until about 3am, had to pay about 1,000 marks to stop the Scots from burning Ripon to the ground. I'm almost convinced that was Douglas and his army.

A'reyt Bruce. Grand tale again. I used to play on those familiar Berwick ramparts at medieval knights, though I never fought Scottish ones in my holiday games as over the border in Coldstream I picked such lovely strawberries, one for me, one for the basket. Then off to Seahouses to haggle for fish straight off the boat (Yorkshire kids need no training in thrift).

I travelled up to Berwick yesterday for my job. Long old drive from Bradford West Yorkshire but absaloutly stunning looking part of the country. The sea is so blue,castles every few miles. I'm in love with that corner of England/Scotland

My father and grandfather came from Berwick upon Tweed, they were made Freemen of the town and my paternal ancestors were from the area, whenever I go back there I at home.

I don't know what anyone else thinks but I think that Berwick is one of the hiddeh gems in the British Isles. It's a beautiful place to visit if you don't mind the wind.

It amazes me how few people know about the Battle of Loudoun Hill.
This is where Robert defeated 300 English knights with a small motley crew.
I always thought Jack Bruce , Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker had a hand in this…

I have a DVD of Tom Weir visiting the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed for Weir's Way on STV many moons ago and at the end of his tour he spoke into the camera to the viewer that he believed that the Town in every sense was of a Scottish town . Thanks for replying.

The SNP have voiced the desire to take the north of England down to Manchester from the west across to the east, this was voiced by Nicola Sturgeon herself in the recent past. history never stops and borders never remain stable or permanent. Love your channel.

On my dad’s side my family is from Berwick -Upon-Tweed. They were all fisherman. I recently saw a copy of my great grandpas birth certificate and it says the town was part of Scotland. However, we thought he was English. So we can’t tell if we’re English or Scottish. The copy was from the 40s when he needed it sent to the US after he moved here.

As someone who lives in the area - its interesting you talk about Berwick making no geographical sense being in England. What I was told, and happy to be corrected, is that the whole of the south of Scotland was once the kingdom of Northumbria before the 7 kingdoms were united into England. What is now known as the Scottish Borders could be argued as a annexed area of England from when the Scottish saw a chance to take land when the English were pre-occupied with the Vikings. Then the Normans invaded and they did the roman approach and didn't really care about anything north of Newcastle until later, so never restored the England/Scotland border to where it originally was when the two countries were formed.

South of Scotland was never in England as England is mapped out now it was however part of the Independent Kingdom of Northumbria. The Kingdom of Fife was a separate Kingdom once that was swallowed into being what is now Scotland. England wasn’t formed when Northumbria held the lands between the Forth & the Humber. It wasn’t until the Battle of Carham the Tweed formed the border as we know it now between Scotland & England. So rightfully Berwick does belong to Scotland and Scotland held it first before the wars of independence changed its nationality 14 times over the next few centuries.
We all can't join cause times r truly hard here in the south of the USA. Every penny I use for my family.

Hi Bruce,Iv msgd you before I'm sure.I was wandering if you could point me in the right direction, all my life my mums said that on her and my grans,her mums side that we were related to the black Douglas,I had no idea the black Douglas as she'd referred to him was Robert the Bruce's right hand man,have you any idea how I could track this down and prove it one way or the other,It's funny because my grandparents have got a rich history,my grandfather was a 17 year old whaler from Kincardine who got drafted into the war and his boat was torpedoed and he was the sole survivor of the whole ship,my other grandfather was a paratrooper who thought all over Europe and the Netherlands, and my dad's dad,survived the concentration camps in Poland, and came over here after the war ,thanks for taking the time to read this,thankyou for any advice you could give me.
I'm not sure what you want to track down, James Douglas was definitely Bruce’s shining Knight. As for your Ancestry, you need a genealogist, but that's a long way back. The genealogist I know is Sarah at Unlovk My Past www.unlockyourpast.co.uk/

Bruce , once I was driving out of Paxton close to the banks of the north side of the River Tweed towards Berwick at night and not far eastwards is the current borderline into Northumbria & England in the bounds of Berwick ( obviously the Parish of Berwick Upon Tweed ) at night and as we approached the borderline we saw a badger 🦡 running towards the border. So I am wondering if that particular badger 🦡 is a Scottish Badger 🦡 or an English Badger 🦡 or British Badger 🦡 or a Berwicker Badger 🦡? 😂

I remember a few years ago someone did a survey of the inhabitants of Berwick and more than half wanted the town to go back to being in Scotland.

It changed hands several times to the extent that in the 60s the town council discovered that they were technically at war with the Soviet Union as they had been on one side when a war with Russia started and on the other when it ended meaning they were not technically covered by the terms of the treaty . Nikita Kruschev sent a delegation to sign a peace with the citizens of Berwick.
Battle of Halidon Hill we lost it for the final time just the north of the town a stones throw away from the big Morrison’s supermarket lol

If I lived in Berwick Upon Tweed and was born & bred there and lived on the north side of the River Tweed and my accent was distinctly Scottish I would consider myself Scottish 100% definitely. Why do you want Berwick to be transferred to Scotland? Does it matter that much? Sorry I don't understand the logic. Technically parts of the Lowlands belong to England because of Northumbria.

All the Scots lowland areas of Northumberland including Edinburgh given to the Scottish crown by the English Anglo Saxon house of Wessex pre 1066 need to be returned to England by the SNP along with Robert Burns night and his old English scribbles .... I have always been very interested in the history of Berwick Upon Tweed and always said and believe that part of Berwick north of the banks & its bounds belong to Scotland and will never be English or part of England in the true sense of the word. Stolen through conflict doesn’t mean it rightly belongs to England , a thief should not be able to hold and process something that isn’t theirs by right. Imagine Ayrshire had lost Ayr to the English that would not be right it would be a total injustice, just like Berwick was taken out of Scotland the old county town taken out of Berwickshire to England. Funny how the River Tweed in all its entirety is under Scots law when it comes to fishing rights yet the town and bounds of Berwick north of the Tweed remain under English Rule. All because of greed of the English Crown of the time power & wealth. I have always thought after about around 300 odd years of peaceful Union between Scotland & England I never understood why England never gave us Berwick back in a peaceful manner just like they did to giving Monmouthshire back to Wales I think in the early 1970’s ?
Berwick was there before Scotland existed as a Northumbrian town.

It’s geographically in the south east corner of Scotland maybe not politically but it is in Scotland. It’s a town neglected by London they don’t care about it. @@williamlong7188 If your taking 'Stolen land', which border are you talking about? The Scottish border moved considerably south since the Kingdom of Scotland formed in 843. England lost land after its founding in 927 as the kingdom of Northumbria became England. Additionally, Northumbria is considered by many historians to be the birth place of England. For much of its existence, Northumbrian kings (Oswald being a good exampled) were the overlords of the other English Kingdoms.

Those lands from the Forth to the Tweed were seceded to Scotland just in the same way old Strathclyde ran from the Clyde Basin of Dumbarton to as far as the Lake District in Cumbria lands were seceded to England.

Bruce , imagine at that time a Scottish Soldier had invented a nuclear ☢️ bomb 💣 over England say at the battle of Halidon Hill when we lost the town for good ( 1498 I think ) we could had won the town back no problem at all.
