- For the first time celebrating Chinese New Year in my husband's hometown in rural China. Ep 48⬇See more below⬇
First, I want to say to all of you affected by the coronavirus you are in my thoughts. Sending you lots of love and strength! Me, my family and friends are fine. Please stay safe, everyone!
In this Life in China Vlog I'll show you how we celebrated our first Chinese New Year together with my Chinese husband. I have not shown you my husband before or even told you I have a husband, but since we recently got married, here we go, our first vlog together!
We went to my Chinese husband's hometown in rural China, Zhejiang province, to celebrate Chinese New Year 2020. This was my first time celebrating Chinese New Year in my husband's hometown. Rural China differs a lot from Beijing, where we normally live, and I loved it!
Chinese have different traditions related to CNY. In my Chinese husband's hometown they have a tradition of making mantous, Chinese bun-like baking products, during the Chinese New Year. I wanted to make this video about Chinese New Year cooking, but I failed since I took a nap and slept too long, so I missed half of the cooking process of the mantou, haha!
In addition to mantou, there are lots of fireworks and firecrackers as Chinese New Year traditions. Many local governments in China have forbidden Chinese fireworks due to the bad air quality, but my husband's hometown is far away in the mountains of Zhejiang in rural China, so people still set off fireworks and firecrackers.
There are lots of other Chinese traditions related to Chinese New Year in China, as well, such as red envelopes, or the so-called hongbao, which are filled with money. Hongbao is usually given to kids, but since we just recently got married, I also received a hongbao. :)
In addition, one nice Chinese New Year tradition is the Chinese New Year decorations, especially duilian or Chinese couplets. I really like Chinese couplets. They are usually red, as all the Chinese New Year decorations are, and they include good wishes for the new year. This year we bought the Chinese couplets, but hopefully next year we could already make the duilian ourselves.
Finally and most importantly, Chinese New Year is all about food. Chinese food differs from city to city or even from a village to village. In my husband's hometown in Zhejiang China the most important Chinese food includes mantou and all kinds of meat. Chinese often celebrate Chinese New Year by making jiaozi, dumplings, but in my husband's hometown they make mantou.
I hope you like this Chinese New Year vlog. I wanted to upload this Chinese New Year vlog before I finish my Japan vlog, since I felt like this is more timely now. However, I will definitely finish the Japan vlog series as well, as soon as I get it edited.
Happy Chinese New Year of Rat to everyone!

Hi! I'm Kaisa, I'm originally from Helsinki, Finland but now I'm currently living and working in Beijing.☆ My channel is mainly lifestyle based. I love cooking, traveling and exploring new things, especially related to East Asia. I want to share my experiences and thoughts on living and working abroad as an expat in China.
Thanks for watching! ❤
Where did you spend your Chinese New Year 2020? What are your favourite Chinese New Year traditions? I hope you are doing well despite the difficult situation. Sending love and strength to everyone affected by the virus. Stay safe!
Which city in China?
I am now in Beijing. I was in Zhejiang, but got back to Beijing last Wednesday. Are you in China?
Kaisa A I’m also in Beijing, I spent it in Tianjin. It’s such a beautiful city.I stayed at a hotel which is right across the Haihe river. I’ve been indoors since I’ve been back in Beijing.
Tianjin is a nice city, very conveniently located near Beijing. Hope you are doing well. Beijing has turned into a ghost city, no people anywhere.
The news got dramatically worse after the CNY. We did not have big family gatherings afterwards. Me and my husband are now back in Beijing and staying at home. His home village in Zhejiang has been locked down, so no one can leave or come in anymore. 新年快乐,身体健康!我从来没有用过bilibili,但是很多人已经说过我应该开始在中国的网站做视频。Maybe one day 😅
You are a very courageous girl to go so far and do so much to embrace your husbands culture. Well done! All the best.
Thanks Bryan! I love to travel far and get to know new cultures. My husband’s home is now my home too so I want to get to know it better. 😊 All the best to you!
I like the little girl wishing her aunty more and more beautiful. That’s nice.
I looove these old style fire stoves, and the Pumpkin mantou looks delicious, I love pumpkin haha. The village is beautiful!
Thanks Miriam for your lovely comment, it made me so happy to hear that you have watched my video! I love the fire stoves too, the food tastes so good, but I have no idea how to cook with them 😂 I also love pumpkin, so simple to cook, just steam it and it tastes delicious! The village is in the mountains, so the scenery is quite beautiful and changes according to the season. ☘️🌾🍁
@@kaisa_and_anbi I have also only seen people use them! They aren't a thing here in Qinghai unfortunately... I'd love to learn how to use one though! I can imagine it being absolutely beautiful there in spring time

At :45 seconds, there is something about the way you speak to your husband trying to get him to sit next to you. Your voice, hands and body language show a genuine affection that is reserved for people in love. This video is gold.
Aww thanks @George Lou! 💕✨

Just celebrated Chinese New Years with my family, watching this video reminds me so much of my hometown in China
very cute couple...husband very handsome...ur cute
It's admirable that you can assimilate in the local culture so well. Wish you all a strong and binding relationship
Thank you! 😊❤️
I love the part where you gift the children with red envelopes and they wish you good health. Great vid.
Thanks! I love that part too, the kids are so cute 🥰😊
May I comment that all gifts should be received with both hands? Maybe they were too excited/nervous and forgot.
I was like that when I was young
I just discovered your channel... and I connect already. I, too, am a non-chinese married to a Chinese. We are currently living the the States, but lived the first several years of our marriage in China. In this current time when we are unable to travel back to his hometown, spend time with extended family, and enjoy traditions that are so deep from his culture this video made me smile. Oh how I wish I could record and share his mothers cooking or our neice and nephews antics, even just to hear their voices so clearly. Thank you for sharing. :)
Kaisa, just watched for the first time your video about the trip to visit your husband's village in late Sept 20 and I just simply couldn't stop watching some more (the boxing practice in a hotel was the second and this is the third one in a row). It's so lovely to watch how Chinese NY was celebrated at your husband's village and how well you accustom yourself to living in China and mingling with your husband's family. Wishing you all the very best, keep well and stay healthy!
I'm a Chinese working in Malawi, Africa. I spent my last Chinese new year here with the colleagues here. We set fireworks during the festival, which attracted a lot of the locals to watch. It was my third spring festival stay in Africa, and I hope next new year I can stay with my families in China. Good wishes to all.
Thank you! Must be good memories 😊 I wish you could spend the next Chinese new year in China with your family! ❤️
This couple are cute. The girl’s Chinese is amaze.
Thanks! 😅
a beautiful couple....all the best to both of you. Cheers.

Ok... 3rd video. And I am hooked. You and you new hubby are my new favorites as much as Miriam and her hubby. Cannot wait to see what you have next!
Congrats on your marriage, I wish you long and happy marriage together.
Kaisa! Congratulations to you and your husband! I'm glad that you are happy and safe despite the situation!
Thanks a lot for your lovely comment! I hope you are also happy and safe wherever you are. 💕
Your husband is a bit uncomfortable presenting in front of the camera and giving a speech. However, this is a very authantic man. He looks much more comfortable showing/explaining the tradition during the the event. You are very good at presenting and add explainations. Keep up~ You are a great combination.
You have broke a lot of hearts of your channel subscribers first of them is me 😢 we thought you are single

👍👍👍 your Chinese are very good ‼️😃😃😃👏👏👏
Let me tell you a story I heard years ago. Some guys (soldiers) went to the north for a war with their general in the Ming Dynasty. So they ate Mantou in the north but they found it delicious, and kept it as a tradition when returning home.
Might be a true story 😅👍
All the best, enjoy the wonderous Chinese culture
我祝福你们永远快乐还有Kaisa中文講得非要好。好本領加油Kansa.

Love this place. People here are so happy.
To be honest new year in countryside is 1000 times cooler than in cities. In the old days me and my brothers will set up a big campfire in our court yard and drink together, share stories of each other and look up at the starts. There was no fireworks though in my hometown. We were in a much more rural area than your husband's hometown on southeast side of China. Now our village is almost abandoned. People live in cities now. We only return to the village on Qingming.
Chinese countryside is definitely interesting and it differs from region to region. I like to spend time in the rural China, it gives nice contrast to city life 😊

Congratulations to the couple. Kaisa's putonghua is so good! Always consider Zhejiang a southern province. Assume rice, or may be noodles, the food staple rather than steam buns or dumplings. Visited Huangshan decades ago and found the hills stripped of trees because locals chopped them down for cooking firewood. Heard that in recent years China implemented large scale replanting projects across the country.
Thanks! 😊🥰 the food staple mostly is rice but for some reason during the Chinese New Year they eat mantou in this village in Zhejiang. I visited Huangshan in 2013. In my memories Huangshan is covered with trees, it’s lush and green, but it could be also that I was so concentrated on hiking that did not notice if there were parts lacking trees. Hopefully they preserve the natural beauty of Huangshan, it’s really amazing!
@@kaisa_and_anbi- I didn't mean the trees on Huangshan mountain. On the way to Huangshan our tour bus passed many winding hilly roads and the hills were quite bare of trees. The tour guide at the time said too many trees were chopped down for firewood. It was a long long time ago.
I see, sad to hear that. 😔 We got to Huangshan by using public transportation, we didn’t have a guide. Hopefully those replanting projects would be successful so that there would be more woods again. 🌱
wow. your chinese is amazing😍
In ancient Chinese legends, Nian is a ferocious beast. Every time before the age of the year, he would eat people and animals. In order to drive Nian away, people would beat gongs, drums, set off firecrackers, and write some spells on the doors and windows. Over time, it has formed a very important festival in China now

The day before Chinese new year, we call it "除夕",the pronunciation is "chu xi" , the meaning is getting rid of "Xi", the "Xi" was kind of terrible monster. So people will using the firework to drive the monster away.
That is the legend of Chinese new year
Thanks for sharing the legend! It’s interesting to find out what’s behind all the traditions. 😊
The monster is actually called Nian (年, or Nian Shou 年兽) which appears on the eve of every year causing troubles. In order to scare monster always, people will paste red paper, hang red cloth outside their house and making loud cracking noises. There is a story about Sui (岁) another monster that will terrify children in their sleep on the eve of lunar new year, in order to keep the children safe, parents will light up the house and keep the children awake hence Shou Sui (守岁). A rich official gave his child red paper and coins to keep him awake, but the child fall asleep with the coins wrapped in red paper, and the child was unharmed. Hence Ya Sui Qian (压岁钱)🧧is given to children to keep them safe.
which city of Zhejiang do you live ? I come from zhejiang too.
