- When Jay Swanson moved into his 140-square-foot apartment, a former maids’ quarters (“chambre de bonne”) in central Paris, he had already pared down his possessions to two duffle bags in order to live aboard a hospital ship.
Dissatisfied with an old bed and desk that nearly filled the room, the science-fiction-writer-turned-vlogger took advantage of the high ceilings to create an upstairs using an ultra-tall loft bed with enough space to stand underneath and chunky stairs that double as storage drawers.
To turn his bathroom into a hybrid kitchen, he removed the urinal/bidet and replaced it with an induction stovetop and tiny washing machine. He admits midnight runs to the toilet down the hall aren’t always comfortable, but are worth the added space.
When he first moved in in 2017 Paris was his dining room and living room, but in times of Covid, he has had to readjust to being confined to 13 square meters for months on end. He credits his rich creative life - writing (he wrote “the world’s first real-time fantasy blog”) and video editing (he’s made his living with his TH-cam channel since 2017) - for expanding any space beyond the four walls.

Kristen, another great video. I am always amazed at how people can live and adapt to different environments, spaces and thrive. It appears that Europeans do it easier than we Americans. I heard someone from Denmark say "We live small so we can live large".
Asians like those in Hong Kong and Japan are the masters of tiny living. Seeing these homes makes us in the West, realise how much space we have that is just filled up with unused junk.

If he was used to a ship compartment this is much better. You must love the inner city life of Paris to do this though.
I’m all for living simply and using the outdoors as your backyard. I’m sure this pandemic has made many people question this lifestyle though if you are continuously living in lockdown. So glad for the small courtyard l have.

I appreciate these small spaces that are actually lived in much more than the high end vacation spaces shown by the designer.
Certainly looks like he has everything he needs. It would be so wonderful if I could get rid of the junk and live with only what I need. Living in Paris wouldn’t hurt either.

@@SD-qt1fs I agree. I've been living in Paris for 25 years and I've seen this city turn into a stinky, filthy overcrowded dumpster. Everything here is noisy, grey, repellent and batshit crazy expensive. On one side, the gentrification killed a lot of small handy shops while rising the rents even more and on the other one, there's a massive flow of poverty in this city - "migrants" and homeless people who turned some parts of Paris into genuine slums. You can add all sorts of visual and olfactory pollution, unsafely, insane traffic...
The fantasied idea of a romantic and beautiful Paris is long dead : this capital is just another Gotham.

I can't imaginge living in a space that smal, an the lack of a toilet and kitchen feels horible.
Now imagine this during the constant lockdowns, with the obligation to stay home all the time. This fells like prison.
I assume he pees in the shower.

How does Kirsten make a 14+ minute movie about a 140 sq ft space? Imagine her touring a typical 2500 sq ft American house. That movie would be 14 minutes / 140 sq ft x 2500 sq ft = 250 minutes / 60 minutes per hour = 4+ hours long.
Prolly long but not that long, because they wouldn't focus on talking about being efficient and saving up space, going to the toilet through a corridor etc.

I think that’s a hygienic thing specially since most viruses are introduced into your home by bringing in filthy shoe wear. Kudos for doing that. Notice how clean he keeps everything despite the cramped space.

Jay is an amazing youtuber, he has one of the best vlog channels around. Through his every day journals in Paris he shares his mindful thoughts that speak directly to our hearts. He deserves a sub 😊
I used to live in a tiny studio apartment myself so I'm used to living in a diddy space but this video made me feel claustrophobic. It was fine when I was in my twenties but as you get older you need your proper home comforts like a nearby loo and a workable kitchen space. Watching this just left me feeling very sad about the current state of the world and the unaffordable housing market. How depressing :(
Exactly, we are at this point were people are actually living in cars, because even though they have a job it’s impossible to pay the apartments rent, I have family members that work in San Diego and have to go to sleep to Tijuana México, were rent is lower :(

You think? To me, this doesnt look efficient at all. None of his ”solutions” work well, he basically sleep inside the shower, he doesnt have a real place to cook, no toilet etc. This could be fone so much better.

That loft bed is really nice looking & a great idea for such a small space.
This was super interesting. I hadn't intended on watching the entire thing, but camera work was beautifully woven in with Jay's descriptions. I lived in Paris for years in the early 80's in a student room larger than his studio and I can't believe what he's done with it! I have read some of the comments below re: his channel, so I think it's time I take a look. Thanks for showing us around Kirsten, Nico and Jay.

Your statement about masks also shows a lack of knowledge. Humans have worn masks in many instances of human history. Look at the plague for instance or at the first world war. Also look at the numbers of persons dying at an early age due to dust lungs. Nowadays people wear masks all the time in many professions. Starting with the painters in the car industry or coal.miners preventing coal lungs, but there is many more and I am sure you could come up.with a lot of you d actually research the topic.

Terrific video! Well done!! Really interesting to see how someone can make the best of such a small space. It can be done!! Cozy! In a huge cosmopolitan city, I think it's worth living in such a small space. Renting is difficult in such expensive cities. People are adapting to smaller housing units! It's manageable and these suites can be nicely decorated and made in to super efficient little homes!!

I really like the use of space; I have seen fold away loo that would work in a small space, I couldn't manage that walk every time I needed to go.

This was interesting. He made good use of the space he has. The high ceiling helps a lot (almost always does). What made me smile is that, as small as the space is, if he had visitors, they could actually sleep in their own bed......It is a small space, but as he said, he is in "Paris"....I def would prefer my own bathroom, however.

Two steps above being homeless and barely a step up from a Soviet-era bed-sit. His rent, back in the states, might be a house payment on a decent property. Paris used to be a great city. His videos show good angles at good times. ¿ What would Baron Haussmann think if he saw what was occupying it now and what they've done to it ?

when i lived in 25 sq m apartment in Shenzhen, China (with loft bed as well) - i thought it's already possible minimum, but this box goes beyond. it's crazy.

It really makes you appreciate what you have, I live in a nice home, 3600 sq ft and sometime we want a larger home with more rooms (due to children). This really inspires you to transform the space you do have to fit your needs.
