    Cream of tartar. When combined with baking soda you have fresh baking powder. Great for long term storage.

    Spice has an “expiration date” only to increase sales. McCormick figured out that nobody was throwing them away and replacing, so added expiration dates that some people feel they have to abide by.

      Yup, I have some that "expired" in like 2017... we still use it and we're alive... obviously those ones aren't ones we use regularly hence why I'd hate to re-purchase them.

      So true. My daughters went through my spice cabinet and started throwing away my spices. I had to explain to them that it was just a "hoax" by the spice companies to get you to throw out good spices and replace with new ones. If they're kept sealed in a container and out of the sun and heat, they're good, which mine are always.

    Canned diced tomatoes …good for making sauce, soups, stews and extending recipes. ❤️❤️❤️

    • @LiberLady
      @LiberLady 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the acids in the tomatoes eat through the metal and seals, making them not last more than 2 yrs. We had #10 cans that leaked all over our shelving in our long term storage.... what a total waste!
      You'll get a longer shelf life if you dehydrate and pulverize into powder, and vacuum seal in a canning jar, - reconstitute by adding water. Will store by far longer than any canned tomato product will.

    Refrigerator Creamers, I’ve used ones that expired 1 year earlier. They have no issues. No curdling. Nothing. I’m still using my pumpkin spice ones from thanksgiving. I stock up on my favorites around the holidays and use them all year long! It kind of makes you wonder what’s really in them that is keeping the shelf life so long in the refrigerator. 🧐

    Thank you for the confirmation on lots of these foods! I bought a 25# bag of Clear Jel when I first started canning (for pie filling) because that was the only size I could find locally. It is still completely fine 8 years later after being kept in an airtight container and re-vacume sealed after refilling my pantry container each time. According to the package it expired 7 years ago, lol. I use it now in place of regular corn starch and it will probably last me another five years considering how slowly I'm using it. Thank you, Kimmy!

    Thanks for this quick yet very informative video! Everyone needs to know this now. We just moved into a new house and I’ve now turned one room into a long term storage room, just like you! I’ve been watching you for probably two years now. You have me motivated. We bought half a cow, have long term food, growing a small garden because we got into our house a little late. We are in an HOA, so no chickens! That’s a huge bummer! I know you’re a very, very business woman plus all your other roles, but I’d really like to send you a personal message that’s not open for the world to read on the internet. Coconut oil also only lasts for about 5 years and once you start seeing yellow or brown streaks in it's solid form it's time to throw it out.

    I think it's very wise to know that a lot of our food banks get donations of near expired / expired food for food giveaways, and mobile pantries.
    Run by local churches and social agencies, they have to follow certain FDA standards.
    This reminded me that you can go beyond those expiration
    dates on some items and still consume them.
    Yes, it does effect vitamin content, taste, and looks. But still very consumable.
    And now a days you can buy multivitamins to suppliment those needs.
    Hope this helps some of the fear of consuming some expired food items.
    There will come a time when the information will be important, and needed.🤔

    • @theyoftheravens
      @theyoftheravens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mmmhm. If you wouldn't eat it, don't push potentially bad food on people in need. I've been on food pantry before, having food spoil sucked something awful when you're not able to replace it.

    • @lorrainefloyd9845
      @lorrainefloyd9845 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is donated that is why they are able to give it away after expiration. There are no FDA guidelines. Just like if your neighbor gave you something or from their garden. Stores are not allowed to sell for profit because there is a possibility of contamination or mold. Better safe than sorry.

      @lorrainefloyd9845 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Saravannerman ..
      Well I live in Pittsburgh, PA. They give out expired food all the time. You ate wrong the FDA does regulate food pantries. So your very mistaken. I don't care what your church does. Food banks are not always connected to churches just an F.Y.I.

    • @lorrainefloyd9845
      @lorrainefloyd9845 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Saravannerman..Excuse my typo. The FDA does not regulate food pantries. The U.S postal even does a food drive to local food banks in our city. It is not regulated for expirations. Do you what the FDA does and how they actually operate? They regulate the production and sales of food and drugs. Maybe the Health department could get involved with your churches food bank but not the FDA.

    Coconut oil can last about 24 months but only if it's refined.
    Maple syrup can last indefinitely if it's in a sealed glass jar. If however, it in plastic the shelf life is about 2 years, if it's in metal tins only about 6 months.
    Popcorn only about 2 years after that it may not pop, but you can still grind it to make cornmeal
    When it comes to drink mixes only those with full sugar are safe for consumption after long periods. Those made with artificial sweeteners shouldn't be consumed after expiry because they go through chemical changes that could be harmful to consume.
    Powdered milk shelf life is basically indefinite but only if unopened. If opened then about 2 months if it's nonfat or 2 weeks if whole fat

Hard to keep track of time when sick lol) they're tender. Does depend on the size of egg noodle, too. 🤔

      Where do you live? Kim's in Utah, as am I and in Utah it's a drier climate than some states. So our spices can last virtually forever in Utah. In a humid climate like say Maine or Florida they probably would be more likely to get moisture in there, The clumping is probably from moisture. Spices are dried, so I don't think drying out could be an issue... One suggestion is to keep them further from your stove so that steam from cooking won't get near your spices also don't use them straight from the bottle over your pan, sometimes the steam can go up into the bottle, if that makes sense... so instead maybe put it in a measuring spoon then use the measuring spoon to dump it into your recipe.

    I can tell you from experience that beans, ghee, coconut oil and cinnamon do not last forever, ghee and coconut oil only have a shelf life of about 5 years. Ghee will turn white and have a sour smell and the coconut oil starts getting yellow brownish streaks through the oil when in solid form. Beans do last forever but they start to lose their vitamin content after a couple of years and after about 5 years they become tough and chewy. Cinnamon and any other ground up spices start to lose their flavour after a couple of years however whole spices can last forever, I bought nutmeg, peppercorns and cinnamon sticks in bulk 15 years ago and they taste and smell as fresh as the day I bought them. This has been my experience and research, thanks Kimmie love watching your content, God bless

      Ghee is fantastic, better than butter IMHO. Coconut oil I use in Thai cooking and for baking mainly.

      @@justpatty7328 I use a little coconut oil in the pan for fried eggs or scrambled . It's good for you versus the industrial seed oils like canola or veg oil.

      I use coconut oil for most stovetop cooking uses. Ghee can be used as a self-stable replacement for butter. I made a big batch with $1.99 lb butter 2 years ago and I'm using it now to stretch my butter dollar today.
