FILM ROOM: TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS IS THE BEST CENTER IN 20 YEARS FOR WARRIORS

  • FAIR USE: I do not own any of the NBA contents used in this video - I am using the guidelines of "Fair Use" for educational purposes only.
This video provides a film breakdown of Trayce Jackson-Davis, aka TJD, in the first NBA game of his career as a rookie against the Kings. He played a mere 5 minutes but showed everything we needed to know about the player he is going to be for the Warriors moving forward.
There's just one problem: Steve Kerr and the coaching staff haven't put him in the regular rotation despite needing his presence badly on both ends of the floor - even this game, he only got to play because Draymond was out and Dario Saric was in foul trouble.
Playing TJD rotational minutes will make the Warriors look like the best team in the league. Until then, they will continue to look like a slightly better than middle-of-the-pack team.

This announcers first opening sentence echoes my thoughts exactly. I'm willing to bet the Warriors would have won all those close games had TJD been inserted in the lineup at the beginning. He's the REAL DEAL..!!!
Hopefully Kerr will play him at least 25 minutes the team needs and deserves.
He is the juggernaut the Warriors need.

I saw what he did for our G-league team, TJD needs to be getting 15 minutes at the minimum!!!!!! He already knows what his strengths are and plays to them and knows what his role is on the team, not many teams can already get that in a rookie player! Kerr needs to open his eyes and give him his deserved playing time! Also Bpodz had a great game too.

Bro... you did a marvelous job for half of this video. I loved TJD from halfway through his JR season at Indiana and I had him down for the 18th pick, being POSITIVE he would be good for us, but perhaps you could chill a bit. Like all rookies, he's not that comfortable with the most sophisticated read and react offense in the league, Saric is a little better at it because he isn't investing effort into the transition to the NBA.
Last night's Santa Cruz game is the most similar I've seen him since leaving Indiana, the situation feels mire like what he's used to. I realize that he's getting better every game so it makes stuff cloudy, but I hat hearing non-NBA coaches label a coach that has won 4 titles in 9 years as incompetent... Kuminga and Moody look as good as they do now precisely because they were slow rolled and sent back to the drawing board many times, not in spite of it.

You may say that I am biased, but as an Indiana fan I have watched just every one of his games in college. I can honestly say that I have not seen anyone more prepared to start in the NBA in 20 years. I heard all the people in the media and so-called NBA fan experts say that he is a rookie and would get limited playing without having seen how he played at Indiana. It really was incredulous to hear this from so-called experts without any real knowledge of having seen his game. (I know many will argue that the NBA game is different, but he was so much better than the college players he went up against that it still was not hard to project against NBA talent.). Alot of Group Think amongst the so-called experts and bias against rookies.
There were so many underclassmen draft before him that will never really get any playing time. TJD was way ahead of just about all of the early people taken in the NBA draft.
Kerr needs to stop playing favorites based on loyalty and go with objective talent. What's amazing is Kerrs inability to recognize TJD talent and to use it from the beginning. Saric will always gravitate to the perimeter and Looney is just to slow and unathletic. The one statistic that is consistent is just about every game they have lost has seen a deficit of points in the paint. Take a look if you don't believe me. You live by the 3 pointer you can die by the 3 pointers when it's not going in.
    Couple things to note:
1 He has already been coached by an NBA coach (Mike Woodson).
2 He is older than most rookies out there.
3 He does the dirty work most players don't do.
4 Most people don't realize how fast he can move his feet (e.g. fake and spin to the basket).
5 People have not even seen how good he is with dishing out assists.

    • @TheBasketballInvestigator
      @TheBasketballInvestigator  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

GREAT analysis. It was obvious to me from day one without even watching college ball through the highlights what he could do. He's an elite ball handler who could easily school NBA centers but Kerr is too dense to even entertain that possibility.

No way Kerr gives TJD or BP meaningful minutes this year or next.
Kerr has become obsessed with playing not just small lineups but micro lineups, and irrationally/stubbornly refuses to play rookies or other young players significant minutes, supposedly because they make too many mistakes, disregarding the fact that his vets often lead the team in turnovers by wide margins (Draymond, Steph, and Klay will often have 3-5 turnovers each).
Of course never playing enough minutes to get into a flow, and constantly looking over your shoulder to see if you are getting yanked, and being unable to play through and learn from mistakes, is not a great recipe for developing young talent. But that is the GS experience for their young players. As great as Kerr has been over the last decade (one of the best coaches in the NBA), I think he is regressing as a coach, in part, I think, because he is just stubborn enough to (unconsciously?) sabotage his own decision making rather than admit any critics of his small ball lineups and rookie development (or lack thereof) might be right.

This is a really interesting take. I wonder how they found such a gem so late in the draft. He must have some deficit that caused him to slip so far. I agree he has earned more minutes and he is the first player to really look like he could be the linchpin of the defense in the future. He could succeed draymond in that regard. amazing thing about dramond is that he has continued to also be a linchpin of the offense.
Doesn't matter if he starts just that he gets more minutes the warriors are set up to have a great bench and it could be a great season as both the bench and starters continue to perform at such a high level.

He’s older than JK, his dad is a former NBA player, his college coach is a former NBA player…TJD actually played the center position other than Looney. He has plenty of basketball experience to allow him to be in the rotation way earlier being a big man. Everything in this video is correct. TJD should absolutely get more playing time and I’ve been saying since he got drafted was THE BIGGEST STEAL in the draft. There are 3 rookies in the g-league that can save the Warriors this year but Steve Kerr and the Warriors cannot see it. The old players are being guarded by young players and cannot get good shots (especially when they are tired because of long minutes). The main problem is that their shots are not going in. If Kerr will only use them with a lot of minutes, the veteran players can rest a bit.

They just standin' there, throwin' up their hands, rackin' up them weak fouls 'til they in deep water. And on the boards? They ain't even tryin' to snag rebounds or put back them missed shots. Maybe they just ran outta gas, but we need some young guns who can bang inside, play tough D, and still get buckets on the other end. TJD has been amazing but let's calm down ourselves a bit. He's still a rookie and he still has to learn the game and learn how to play the nba game. Looney is a quality center that plays exceptional defense and Saric and CP have amazing PnR chemistry. Let TJD grow naturally over time he'll earn his minutes, and he'll be great when we play against bigger teams.

    • @TheBasketballInvestigator

He's a 4-year college player and almost 3 years older than Kuminga and Moody - not your typical rookie. JK/Saric combo has a net rating of -7.3, so the PnP chemistry is negated by the terrible front court defense.

Kerr played him for 30 seconds against the Pistons when the game was already over.

It's not about being better, it's about using logic to enhance the team. If my logic happens to make more sense about this situation than what they're doing, it is what it is. Also, what you're saying is not how life works

If only cp3 came earlier to the warrior wiseman could have been the best center that warriors have
With the intellectual talent cp3 have he can teach and make wiseman a good basketball player as he is
Cp3 have developed many nba center because of wittiness in the court you can ask ayton and saric
Its pitty wiseman did not make his potential game because cp3 came late in the warrior

Wiseman is not an NBA-caliber defender, therefore, he should never see any playing time for any legit contender.

      @@TheBasketballInvestigator I don't think so
Wiseman is a better defender when he was playing in g league but not utilised by his coach because kier wants to played small ball
And they did not have the caliber of CP3 in thier roster who is willing to teach big man a good basketball lesson

Wow, you say TJD is the best center drafted by the warriors? Hard to believe that. TJD seem like a kid who has some potential but someone who is not going to make it to the warriors lineup on first or second string. He’s not exceptional at any one thing…which is a trait that everyone in the warriors have. I say he’s out in 2-3 years. If not, he will just be around. Steve Kerr is betting on Looney and Kuminga as the next high potential stars, it appears to me.

In 2-3 years, you can come back to this video and apologize to TJD for this take 🤣

First of all, its much too early in the season to be throwing out such critical advice for a team jus coming home with a crucial WINNING road record! Kerr is still juggling the lineups to see what works in certain situations. And not be offensive but your analysis would hold more water if you had the coaching record Kerr does!

"It's too early" is what people told me last year when I said the Warriors were not going to win unless they made fundamental roster changes by the trade deadline.
Warriors w/ a winning record is good, but it took 2 game-winners to not be 4-5. They've not been as good as you'd like to believe, and it's simply because Kerr leans into non-defensive lineups too much. Put TJD in there and Warriors are blowing out all these teams.
