Leaving a dog home alone (even for a small amount of time) is inevitable but can be an incredibly stressful event for both Yorkies and their humans.
Separation anxiety goes way beyond a Yorkie simply missing his owners when left by himself.
It involves an overwhelming emotional response to the isolation that is felt and is expressed by a range of certain behaviors.
It is a very common issue with all dogs in general; though, some breeds, like the Yorkshire Terrier that worked alongside humans during their entire development, are more prone to this than others.
This can develop at any age. While it often begins during the puppy phase and may continue unless steps are taken to resolve this, older Yorkshire Terriers may start to have problems after previously handling things just fine.
The time that it takes for a dog to start to feel stressed will vary. Each dog has their own tipping point; A Yorkie may have separation anxiety only when left home for long periods of time while another may be highly sensitive and show signs and symptoms of this after just minutes.
Fortunately, there are quite a few things that you can do to help your Yorkie handle being home alone.
This section will cover everything you need to know including how to set up a comforting environment and helpful aids to keep your little guy or gal occupied, as well as optional calming methods.

I had a Yorkie with terrible separation anxiety. It was my fault. I was so happy when I got him that I didn't set proper boundaries. It took a long time to treat. I still work the same exercises and he has more confidence, but he rarely sleeps when I'm away.

Lol mine always thinks he’s coming! Even if I get him to sit by the time I reach the door he’s right behind me. But so cute how excited he gets when I return!

I adopted my YT and he is cute. No problem when I’m home. But when we leave it is horrible. We put him our bathroom which was a large room. Big mistake. He has torn up the door several times. Blinds are a mess. Not to mention he wakes the kids and myself at 6am every morning to go for a walk. Even though we walk him often. It’s stressful. I’ve never had this issue with my poodle. This the first time I’ve had a dog with severe anxiety. I would think twice before purchasing this dog if your not home 24/7.

My gfs dog is a wimp 🙄 it's too much. He poops everywhere when she has to do stuff without taking him. He doesn't let us cuddle or get close with throwing himself right in the mix and collapsing on her so she's forced to cuddle with him. We can't even kick him off the bed at night because he pace around for hours and his nails are scratching the wood floors so loudly it's annoying. I'm over it.
