I resisted responding to JB about her current video in which she's adamant about journals being labeled "correctly" and the process approached having a distinct outcome. One person's junk is another's treasure!
I believe junk journaling is a state of mind--and does not require a definition. Junk journaling can be about recycling and repurposing. Every time I go to my "tools" and "supplies" I am taking a designer's idea and do just that: recycle, repurpose and recreate their imagination into my own creations!
Let's not get hung up on labels, and please, let's refrain from putting ourselves in boxes.
I admire your spirit Barbara, enjoy your videos and am inspired to create, thank you.

Cordiall Water i’m so glad I wasn’t the only one that disagreed with her, I did comment on her video. I think there was far too much definition. I don’t think journaling is about being correct and using a correct term, it’s art.

I saw that video that you’re referring to and it had an almost “angry” vibe. This is your channel, so call your journal whatever you want to call it! Most digi[kits are made from old images, old papers, used books, used materials that were discarded or set aside...(aka “junk”) so it’s all fine to be included under the umbrella of junk journaling. The real importance is the creative process and the enjoyment of that process...NOT the terms used while creating....there’s no need to “Police” the creative process with terms that are made up of someone else’s perception of what junk is. Keep doing what you do, and don’t worry about what she calls junk. I love your videos and kits in your store. Keep the junk journaling going!!!!

I just watched the video defining what the different journals should be called. As a "real" old woman of 73, I have learned that being creative, in whatever form that takes, is more important than semantics. I am new to "junk journaling" and I call it that because it is a popular and recognizable term, whether it is truly, or not, junk. The process of creation comes from within and no one's definition should alter the joy of being lost in time, creating whatever you can imagine. I understand what she was trying to impart, but time is a great equalizer, and in the "end" it does not matter. So I will continue to create my memory-filled, altered smash book art glue junk journals, and I sincerely hope you all do the same ❤❤❤

Hi Barbara, thanks again for sharing one of your fabulous creations. Who really cares about the ‘correct’ or ‘proper’ name for journals, its still only a name someone has ‘made up’. Name them what you want. Do what you love, Love what you do. I’m in Queensland, Australia. We are experiencing the beautiful spring season at present. Love your channel, you are my favourite. I have made 4 junk journals now & I have NEVER bought supplies for it. I use whatever I have, old scrapbooking papers, bits from birthday cards I’ve received, old printing paper I’ve coloured with different means, food wrappers, clothes labels & I always make my own covers from scratch for it. I’m just helping my 10.yr old granddaughter with her first one & I’m letting her put whatever she wants in it…literally anything.

I love your videos. The journals are absolutely beautiful, whatever you decide to call them. I don’t care for people who want to tell other people what to call their work. I understand why she felt the need to define different types of journaling, but I think she needs to chill. I will continue to call my journals junk journals if I want to. It’s so easy to allow people to allow us to feel ashamed and tell us we are wrong. I say we stop piling on shame and guilt in a community where it’s supposed to be about exploring our art form and allow people to make beautiful art. Keep up your beautiful journaling Barbara.thanks for being an inspiration and judging no one!

I can see from your older journals that you went through phases like I did. I did the zentangles, mandalas, and also the dot art. I have tons of beads and supplies for handmade jewelry as well. Now I’m loving the junk journaling and have found that all my years of going through phases and collecting all the supplies that I did, I can now also incorporate into my journals. I love the fact if I want to do more mandalas I can create a journal with them. It makes me feel better that others have gone down the same path as I have as my husband calls me a “horder” of all the art supplies. So I love to see all the phases that others have gone through and can now incorporate that into their journal making. Thank you for all your inspiration and motivation to extend my boundaries in what I create. 💜😉💜😉

Can I say, does it matter? I think it's sad , (and I'm of an older generation,) that so many things are labelled, even people with personalities that people may term as not the norm are given labels. Life isn't full of boxes in which we have to fit. I think it is wonderful to express ourselves with creativeness fitting no agenda at all.

This project is gorgeous! I'm going to call my journals "Kitchen Sink Journals". Because when I make my journals I put a lot of patterned scrapbook paper, ledger, fabric, trims and laces, lined, grid, book pages, music pages, map pages, vellum, etc. in my journal. Then I write in it, glue in pictures, receipts, wrappers, bags, wrapping paper, stickers, stamping, stenciling, dried flowers, tickets, etc. in it. From the creation to the writing and adding my ephemera it's got everything. Everything but the kitchen sink. :D When I was in first grade we lived in Massachusetts and I remember in the Fall the teacher took us out on the playground which was surrounded by trees and we picked up leaves. I haven't thought of that in years till you mentioned Boston and the leaves changing color.

True junk makes a true junk journal. I have just started out on the j.j. journey, and I find myself being too critical of my finished work, instead of just enjoying the process. I think what you did is beautiful and special to you at that time in your life. It's a process of evolvement, not a journey of perfection.

You put into words exactly what I was trying to say.... I’m not sure my “journaling” fits into any one category, as I combine them all - I quite often do art journaling in my junk journal ( too many labels) , so I just call it journaling and creating. I’m having fun - I don’t mind what it’s called.

Hi Barbara. I recently saw that video too, and really like the explanation of the different journals. And yes, she is right, it should be made out of junk to call it Junk Journal, but I think either way you call them or make them, the art and creativity is in every one of them. The process that all of you use and the outcome of every creation is awesome, is Art. What one can transform junk into, or create digital images, or paint, or collage...is just beautiful. I see them as Art. All so inspiring. (And I love chocolate too!)

I agree with the ladies below: never mind the definitions and naysayers, keep your spirits bright and just do you. I'm in a "loosen up" phase at the moment. Just grab your gear and play. The very essence of art is self expression. As it happens, I have a few pizza boxes and plenty of chocolate packaging to play with from gifts this year. Bright blessings.

But as I commented there, „junk“ isn’t only trash. Actually Google translate it into about 25 different ways : Trödel, Ramsch, Krempel, Klumpatsch, Kikikram, altes Zeug...
Also, most important is being creative with stuff, enjoying the process and with luck, the outcome.
Now, up to this prompt, I still haven’t decided what is my favourite sweet, but the chocolate you choose is totally my taste. I think, this prompt will be a great excuse to buy me a fancy box of chocolate 😍😁

Your humble attitude is refreshing to witness and your example should be a reminder to us all. I’ve seen a lot of egotistical attitudes in the videos I’ve watched, usually thinly veiled under the guise of some form of modesty, and they’re quickly dumped from my list of channels I subscribe to. Fall is FINALLY here in the Pacific Northwest and the elderberries will be sweeter after the frost. I’m looking forward to many mornings watching the sunrises and sunsets from my new home on a big, beautiful river. I just received my new down coat, so I’ll be toasty as I sit on the dock soaking up the negative ions! I love Trader Joe’s dark chocolate bars - very smooth and luscious.

I think of junk journaling as using all the junk that I have bought and collected over the years. I got into junk journaling because I started scrapbooking and I hated it. I also love collecting papers, so when I find treasures at the thrift store, yard sales, or stores I add them to my junk collection. I do appreciate what a true junk journal is so I'm a little unsure what I should call all my stuff now. :) I know that when I shop at junk/thrift stores.... they kinda remind me of my all stuff. I love your journal made from junk! To me, that represents what is truly junk journaling, the original form. I think that the journals we like to make out of various supplies we have are a form of art journaling. Even true junk journaling is a form of art journaling.

I am guilty too of thinking and doing my journals as junk journals, but I try as much as possible to incorporate the vintage type with junk journaling. I can't help myself with beautiful ephmeras, digital printables that are readily available. Once I buy online, I print them on recyclable paper. I'll just enjoy the process of journaling because it makes me happy decorating pages and papers. Thanks to another beautiful video Barbara.

Here in Virginia (this is September 7 2022) the changing over to Autumn is happening but the drought and heatwave is playing with the leaves. I live near the oldest mountains in the world. Leaves turn red orange yellow brown rust. And yes I love homemade jam . I make strawberry and blueberry jam oh and last year cherry. I love chocolate. And branch the wren I think is sitting on look like the red berries of the dogwood tree. You are going to have to ask Tim what branch that is- rose or dogwood. Love your channel. Mostly watch on tv.

Good that you mentioned that video of JennyBelly. I saw it too and I must say I have struggled with the term junk journal for a while already. I don't use much or hardly any "junk" and I also feel a bit weird because they are treasures if I use them, not junk.... you understand yes? And no absolutely don't be ashamed. It’s winter in Kansas now, but we had the most beautiful reds in our leaves 🍁 in the fall of 2020! I’ve been following you for several days and ripped into a beautiful book to transform. It was a gift that had pretty pictures but the recipes weren’t anything l would make. The pictures will give me journaling ideas. Now l will add this idea to it. Beautiful! I love hearing you talk. I miss my husbands’ grandmother Sophie, who was from Austria. She was a Sudalken who married a Meserko. I hope the names are familiar. Your kindness reminds me of her. I can’t wait to see all your videos. I too love Tina “shabbydabbydoodah”...it was so scary to tear out those 8 pages. I watched Gayle do it too. Also, I really like your first junk journal! I can see how you laugh at it now, but I'd be happy if I made one like that someday. One thing though, I could *not* have so many blank pages. Maybe it's the leftover feeling from when I was ridiculously poor, but I tried to use *every* page, otherwise it felt wasteful. It's not, but I was obsessive about it.

It’s lovely to watch you work. Your hands are so beautiful and your commentary so friendly . Here in Ireland we call the wild roses in the hedges dog roses. When they petals fade they leave a red berry behind and we call this the rose hip. I agree the jam is too much trouble to make. I buy it as it is so pretty in a jar. The red currant is delicious . I add a spoonful to everything even tomato sauce and chilli. It has a very enriching effect.

Yes, I watched her video and agree completely. I am new to this media and still use nothing but junk. I refuse to buy digi kits. I will print out freebies but get most of my ephemera from magazines and books and junk mail food boxes etc. I dont plan on selling so they are just little pieces of me.
