I'd be very pleased with an underarm gusset tutorial, I'm a manual wheelchair user so need a huge amount of arm movement and I've avoided making myself anything with sleeves but seeing you do gussets had made me wonder if they might not give me enough range of motion so I'd love to see more about how exactly they work.
They make such an amazing difference! In some older Scandinavian knitwear they make them patterned and different from the body so they are design elements!

Also thank you for making well-placed points when it comes to modern political view-points. I do the same when needed in my own context and your way of doing it is the model I follow. As a POC male in a very white space (Viking reenactment) I appreciate what you say and feel confident in moving forward with what I do. I never thought it would be important to me but I feel affirmed.

Agree, though I am one of the feared people who uphold the glory of all natural fibers, depending on what and how someone else does it just does not work for them, and while I might nor like it, it is only fair and reasonable to accept that. My taste and what I want to sew are reather simple, things I can/could wear in my everyday life, so that works out. No lavish gowns or very elaborate outfits. Most of all, I sew slow. I have the time to keep looking and save for materials between starting one project and the other! A sturdy linen might be more expensiv, than a cheap cottonpoly blend, but the difference is not nearly as great as between a poli satin and a heavy silk one, needed for a ballgown. What I do is not comparable to Rachel who has to whip up something regulary to keep her audiance and does the exact opposite of what I do. She creats as fast and simple as possible absolutly stunning looks, so she uses acrylic on fabric, thats her choice and it does do what she needed of it! It is a costume, it is allowed to do that and does not have to follow the same rules, as normal cloths would. For everyday wear it makes sense to be fiberconcious, to use methods that are practical in the long run, to invest in materials that will hold up, going onto a flashy costume with the same mindset would make it not just expensiv, it would be impossible for about 90% of all people . . . . In the end, most hobbies tend to be expensiv and not quite rescource friendly, If it is the usage of plastic fibers for sewing, or my many many books trees died for, heavy useage of electronics or invaiding and disrupting nature . . . There is no way to not cause harm so get your fun where you get it and make choices based on your prioreties. Maybe you find ways to be more enviroment friendly, like thrifting for stuff, conciously choseing where to go for what, things like that, or if not there, but in a different field all togeather . . . Forceing ones own priorities and exprectations on others, especialy in disregard of their options, situations and goals, simply does not make sense . . . I love what Rachel does and it brings her es well as me and many other viewers a lot of joy. She does not share my prioreties, so what?
For the past ten years I've been about as anachronistic as you get and mostly out of comfort, a joy of the fashion, and the intense lack of money. Sometimes its just about looking good to the crowd and feeling good in what you're wearing. Now of course I'd love to explore absolute historical accuracy, but everyone is different and I think every approach has a place! Another wonderful video as well, I've got quite a few older fabrics that need re-imagining, so this helped inspire that thought again. Best Wishes!

I make my own historical clothing out of old sheets and bedcovers that are cotton or poly-cotton since I can't afford the more historically accurate fabrics and although I'm so proud of them I also do feel scared of being judged in historical clothing circles, so thank you for expressing that that kind of gatekeeping isn't okay in your space. And also, as a nonwhite person, I really appreciate you acknowledging the use of Anglo-Saxon as a dogwhistle and making it clear racism won't be allowed or tolerated here - that made me so happy and feel so welcome, it's the reason your channel is one of my favorites for historical clothing because I know for sure I can feel safe here - plus I love the clothes you make and how you show your process! 💜💜💜

I love how this turned out! The comment about being in Austin and not in Essex was on point. Linen is an absolute must when you never know if Texas is going to participate in winter or just have "mild fall/spring" weather from October through March. As for the Arthurian video ideas, I like both. I'd love to see some interpretations of what might have have worn during the time Arthur is supposed to have happened. But I'm also trash for Pre-Raphealite paintings so....both? For Christmas Eve video, I agree a live probably wouldn't work well but I would love to see the underarm gusset tutorial. I always have to fight with them.

the first video of yours I watched was how being a mediaevalist helped in the Texas snow storm - I loved seeing how your passion for the past can impact on your todays - are you hand making something for someone over Christmas, are you trying a recipe from those times - mead, elderflower wine, have you made soft toys that would of been of that era - did a Saxon mother make a stuffed rabbit for their child - what were Christmas traditions of the mediaeval times - but I still love the straight talking and sewing videos too - good luck and have a lovely holiday

@@OpusElenae Huzzah! I'm slowly (lord help me, very slowly) moving towards starting my own sewing channel. From what I can see the how-to's really help push the algorithm. Besides, just because the big kids have theirs out there in the either doesn't mean there's not room for more. Everybody does everything differently - it's part of the fun.

Another vote for a tutorial on how you set underarm gussets. On Christmas Eve or another day that's more convenient for you, doesn't matter to me, I see your stuff whenever you drop it. :) I learned so much from your tutorial on setting gores (godets?) that I'd love to see how you do gussets. I manage mine OK but am always seeking to learn other people's methods as they might work better for me and I'm not completely happy with my gusset process.

Okay, we start strong with a cat. And the "getting dressed" music is surprisingly epic. I would have liked to see more "This is what I'm changing to make it more accurate" or "Here are things that made sense then that I won't do now", because the description makes it sound like an educational video rather than mostly sewing ASMR. Well done on the new outfit! Another book for Anglo Saxon clothing is Cloth and Clothing in Early Anglo Saxon England, AD 450-700 by Penelope Walton Rogers. It has a ton of information in it.

"Crystal cave" is excellent - "The Hollow Hills" and "The Last Enchantment" continue the tale and are also brilliant. Mary Stewart writes intelligently and relates her interpretation of the Arthurian legends plausibly. Thanks for the videos.
Yay for doing a recreation! The final result turned out lovely. And Bran helping you fell seams is very similar to how my Cleo helps me with embroidery.

I would like all the Arthurian content. All your examples sounds fascinating. (I feel like I crave more early period related content atm) And concerning christmas, do upload! Due to time zones I usually see your videos on saturday mornings and on christmas day morning I will definently need something to watch to recharge due to socialising. Also, sewing content at that time would probably be good to keep me motivated to finish my projects during the holiday, when I hopefully have more time to sew.
I currently work most Saturdays so watch evenings when I am working 8 hour days or on Sunday but we have the 24 and 25th off as paid days so watching on the 24th works well for me. and I did enjoy this video, thanks.
Thankyou for this video, this was wery helpful to see how these garment were made. The desing of these garments resembles closely the clothes worn in Finland around years 600-1100.

Mary Stewart's version of the Arthurian story is one of my favorites as well. Never encountered anyone else familiar with it. It came out lovely! I do enjoy an earth tone.
I enjoyed your recreation of the garment. Revisiting past projects can be fun. Brand is a much more mellow tailor's assistant than Alban Elfed. Alban Elfed pulls pins out and drops them on the floor. Plus, his latest shenanigan has been to knock my box that I keep my beeswax in to the floor. I found the box, but never the beeswax. Our supposition is that the dog ate it. sigh...
My cuppa this morning is Twinings Wild Berries, with heavy cream and sugar, in a very large mug. I have a number of "This should probably be wool or silk, but.... PENNSIC, so... linen!" pieces myself. I do have some lovely light-weight worsted in my stash that has been aging for quite a while, and has been earmarked for specific projects, but it's been hard to find motivation to work on stuff when there aren't any events at which to wear things, and when I already have an entire War of garb in my closet.
I started and stopped this video multiple times today because my body decided today would be a sinuse headache and migraine day. That being said, this was a nice relaxing video when I finally was conscious enough to focus on it. My drink of choice today was chicken broth. I think a video of Bran would be nice. Oooh this is giving me nostalgia 🤣 grew up in the SCA (age 2 up) so pretty much wore t-tunics half my childhood - linen tunics in Australian summer are ideal to not melt when there's no air-conditioning. I am currently drinking hot sweetened condensed milk since my colitis is acting up 😋
I'd love to see some Victorian does medieval fantasy Arthurian wear. I got into Arthurian mythology when I was in my early teens through Gerald Morris' "The Squire's Tales" series, which are absolutely delightful. I haven't read much of the early source material (though I did try my best at reading an English translation of Le Morte d'Arthur around age 13 which was an adventure of sorts), but I've read a number of retellings of the Arthur legends and have always enjoyed them.
I'm drinking Blue Fairy tea from Mountain Song herbals in VA. They also have one called Hippocrates Easing tea. I have a cuppa that when I'm frazzled or having a sleepless night.

Love the whole ensemble! Are the 3 layers of belts really that comfortable? Or are they tied just enough at different points to really hold the whole outfit together well? PA Bran is quite correct that Doors are Evil. For some reason, some of the music brought to mind a 20+ yr old one-season show called Roar but that could just be the whole trip down memory lane of weird media I enjoyed as a teen also obsessed with the medieval period in the late 90's.
I don’t have three belts on; I was showing how each layer might be worn as a completely look, and removed the belt before the next layer went on. So just one belt at the end.
I have to confess, I do shape the tops of my sleeves on both the under and over dresses but that is purely because I wear mine on a daily basis (why wear modern clothing when Saxon/early Norman clothing was much more comfortable) and I find that the slightly fitted sleeves are more comfortable, especially as I am large across the chest area and unfortunately the straight sleeve and gusset don't really fit comfortably, plus they look rather strange as the fabric tends to pull. Can recommend these styles (have a look at the Crows Eye productions video on Saxon dress as well) for comfort and ease of sewing.

Brill vid. Looking for the book you mentioned. A tutorial vid would be good. I struggle with those under arm pieces and necklines (always too big) Sat in bed in several layers as the temps are near freezing and had 1st lot of snow for the season (north yorkshire) hand sewing the waistband on a new 4 gore petticoat and prepping a waistcoat for the addition of D-rings for corseting it (quick and dirty take in job). Drinking normal bog standard Yorkshire Tea. Later will be making hot chocolate from a thick chocolate milkshake.
I think the underarm gusset might be a good one but I'm actually voting for the Bran blooper reel--must keep Anubis happy, just in case. I would love to see more conjectural Dark Ages/Migration Era/Anglo-Saxon Era clothing. It seems like there are so many channels doing the Victorian thing and comparatively few doing anything pre-16th century on a consistent basis.
I feel similarly, which is why I have been refocused on pre-enlightenment content. I do have an Edwardian shirtwaist coming up, because I was a pattern tester, but I think my niche is going to continue to be ren-and-prior.

I’m 1/3 through Owen-Crocker’s book. It’s fascinating how much we DON’T know about the earlier AS period in terms of clothing, and what dress historians have pieces together from bits attached to various metal accessories like brooches. I’m making a later AS outfit and also used unbleached linen for my underdress and have that same color wool to make my overdress, lol. They just seem so perfect in coloring and general aesthetic. Where did you get your cutting table, it is fabulous!
Thanks for this interesting video. The tunica had a lovely colour, though I fear the material was a teensy bit to heavy, as it sadly didn't drape very well in the reveal and cause quite a bit of bulk on the upper body. I personally don't call any English period Arthurian, as he's an idealised fictional character representing the great and glorious Albion. I go from Roman occupation to post Roman to Anglo-Saxon to Norman Invasion, and my preferred time zone is definitely the Anglo-Saxon time which is also influenced by my heathen beliefs in the Germanic/Norse Gods. But don't let yourself feel slighted, as you clearly have enjoyed your Arthurian adventures over the years and had/have access to Ren-faires to match. Something I am actually quite jealous of, as here in Britain and the Continent there is no such concepts. We might, if we're lucky get a day somewhere in a hall or industrial building with exhibitions and stalls, but one goes to see others dressed up and there's limited interactions, maybe a circle dance or so for the 'brave' in the audience to take part in. The only exception of something lasting a little longer is the Viking festival in York, but it's in February and therefore mainly indoors due to the weather, and the indoor events are quite costly, as we're talking York, a rich city with a rich background. Enjoy your Ren-faires, savour them! I will look forward to whatever video you intend to share with us 'croissants', I do not celebrate Christmas, but Yule, and that falls this year to mid-January following the old moon calendar. However, I celebrate Mothersnight on the 24th, watching a video on sewing by my favourite historical seamstress I feel does fit in well. Yeah renaires are a particularly American thing, but we don’t have the same kinds of focused reenactment groups and events like Jorvik, at least not outside Civil and Revolutionary wars (neither of which I am interested in), so there’s pros and cons wherever you live.

I advocate A) feed the algorithm B) go easy on yourself Pick a video that is simplest and least time consuming. When considering this, of course, count production time. Personally, I am usually around on Fridays. Depending on homeostasis, I should be around for a live stream. I also bet that most of your subscribers won't, though. As you can see, my preference is that you produce simple, easy to edit and film content for one of the busiest days of the year. Drinking melted cappuccino popsicle (long story), water next. Perhaps the arm's eye, maybe a tour of your various teas, with talk show
For machine sewing I use gutermann thread; for hand sewing I use Burnley and Trowbridge 80/3 linen thread; natural and black for this project. I always wax and iron my threads too.

Soothing but for someone not versed in SCA (of much of that history for real) I really didn't understand the symbolism (or even what an achievement of arms is...) I honestly believe the world is poorer for the loss of the NJ progressive eccentric take on medieval/renaissance tale. World is better for Bran. My opinion of the term "Anglo-Saxon" ...outside of the misuse by white supremacists and whatever academic debate, it's a commonly "understood" (in quotation marks) for everything of a certain time and place. and perfectly appropriate when in conversation with those whose "study" begins and ends with Disney's Sword in the Stone.
Yeah I agree with you; it’s kind of like “Viking” in that it’s a useful shorthand for people outside of academia, but it comes with some other baggage that we have to be aware of, you know? NJRK was a wild ride, man; I have some really great memories of the place, and some really toxic memories too. It was definitely a formative experience for me.

Honestly personally I'd suggest making something short and sweet to give YOU a break while not losing schedule, and a short tutorial feels like something that would bring slow but consistent views to make up for it being Christmas eve? But then again what do I know of youtube stats lol. Whatever it is, I'll definitely watch it, just probably not on the evening itself. (Or I might on the evening itself if I need to avoid people 🤔)
The exact midpoint, otherwise the gusset is offset weirdly. For cotehardie sleeves, the seam is at the back but that is a shaped sleeve head, not a straight one.

I love how this turned out! The comment about being in Austin and not in Essex was on point. Linen is an absolute must when you never know if Texas is going to participate in winter or just have "mild fall/spring" weather from October through March.
As for the Arthurian video ideas, I like both. I'd love to see some interpretations of what might have have worn during the time Arthur is supposed to have happened. But I'm also trash for Pre-Raphealite paintings so....both?

the first video of yours I watched was how being a mediaevalist helped in the Texas snow storm - I loved seeing how your passion for the past can impact on your todays - are you hand making something for someone over Christmas, are you trying a recipe from those times - mead, elderflower wine, have you made soft toys that would of been of that era - did a Saxon mother make a stuffed rabbit for their child - what were Christmas traditions of the mediaeval times - but I still love the straight talking and sewing videos too - good luck and have a lovely holiday
I have some ideas about a medieval Christmas for next year; I’ll have to think about some of the other stuff. Non-clothing videos tend to perform VERY poorly on the channel.
An underarm gusset tutorial would be most welcome, whenever you choose to do it.
Keep things consistent for the algorithm. Either do a how-to, like the underarm gore trick. Or do something about the 12 days of Christmas celebrations in the time period of your choosing.

Another vote for a tutorial on how you set underarm gussets. On Christmas Eve or another day that's more convenient for you, doesn't matter to me, I see your stuff whenever you drop it. :) I learned so much from your tutorial on setting gores (godets?) that I'd love to see how you do gussets. I manage mine OK but am always seeking to learn other people's methods as they might work better for me and I'm not completely happy with my gusset process.

My cuppa this morning is Twinings Wild Berries, with heavy cream and sugar, in a very large mug.
I have a number of "This should probably be wool or silk, but.... PENNSIC, so... linen!" pieces myself. I do have some lovely light-weight worsted in my stash that has been aging for quite a while, and has been earmarked for specific projects, but it's been hard to find motivation to work on stuff when there aren't any events at which to wear things, and when I already have an entire War of garb in my closet.
Oh gosh and Pennsic is so humid as well as hot (Pennsic was my first two events, and I camped on the Serengeti).
It's always awesome to see all of the layers and how they work together. It also seems like Bran was being a super su-purr-visor this video!

I'd love to see some Victorian does medieval fantasy Arthurian wear. I got into Arthurian mythology when I was in my early teens through Gerald Morris' "The Squire's Tales" series, which are absolutely delightful. I haven't read much of the early source material (though I did try my best at reading an English translation of Le Morte d'Arthur around age 13 which was an adventure of sorts), but I've read a number of retellings of the Arthur legends and have always enjoyed them.
I'm drinking Blue Fairy tea from Mountain Song herbals in VA. They also have one called Hippocrates Easing tea. I have a cuppa that when I'm frazzled or having a sleepless night.

Lol Bran was VERY helpful this episode! This video was good timing for me, although I’m not trying for this exactly, the shifts or under dresses really throw me for a loop. An underarm gusset tutorial would be great to see - but I also vote for a Bran Blooper Reel! Love the whole ensemble! Are the 3 layers of belts really that comfortable? Or are they tied just enough at different points to really hold the whole outfit together well? PA Bran is quite correct that Doors are Evil. For some reason, some of the music brought to mind a 20+ yr old one-season show called Roar but that could just be the whole trip down memory lane of weird media I enjoyed as a teen also obsessed with the medieval period in the late 90's.
I don’t have three belts on; I was showing how each layer might be worn as a completely look, and removed the belt before the next layer went on. So just one belt at the end.
I have to confess, I do shape the tops of my sleeves on both the under and over dresses but that is purely because I wear mine on a daily basis (why wear modern clothing when Saxon/early Norman clothing was much more comfortable) and I find that the slightly fitted sleeves are more comfortable, especially as I am large across the chest area and unfortunately the straight sleeve and gusset don't really fit comfortably, plus they look rather strange as the fabric tends to pull. Can recommend these styles (have a look at the Crows Eye productions video on Saxon dress as well) for comfort and ease of sewing.

Sat in bed in several layers as the temps are near freezing and had 1st lot of snow for the season (north yorkshire) hand sewing the waistband on a new 4 gore petticoat and prepping a waistcoat for the addition of D-rings for corseting it (quick and dirty take in job).
Drinking normal bog standard Yorkshire Tea. Later will be making hot chocolate from a thick chocolate milkshake.

I would love to see more conjectural Dark Ages/Migration Era/Anglo-Saxon Era clothing. It seems like there are so many channels doing the Victorian thing and comparatively few doing anything pre-16th century on a consistent basis.
I feel similarly, which is why I have been refocused on pre-enlightenment content. I do have an Edwardian shirtwaist coming up, because I was a pattern tester, but I think my niche is going to continue to be ren-and-prior.

I’m 1/3 through Owen-Crocker’s book. It’s fascinating how much we DON’T know about the earlier AS period in terms of clothing, and what dress historians have pieces together from bits attached to various metal accessories like brooches. I’m making a later AS outfit and also used unbleached linen for my underdress and have that same color wool to make my overdress, lol. They just seem so perfect in coloring and general aesthetic. Where did you get your cutting table, it is fabulous!

Thanks for this interesting video. The tunica had a lovely colour, though I fear the material was a teensy bit to heavy, as it sadly didn't drape very well in the reveal and cause quite a bit of bulk on the upper body. I personally don't call any English period Arthurian, as he's an idealised fictional character representing the great and glorious Albion. I go from Roman occupation to post Roman to Anglo-Saxon to Norman Invasion, and my preferred time zone is definitely the Anglo-Saxon time which is also influenced by my heathen beliefs in the Germanic/Norse Gods. But don't let yourself feel slighted, as you clearly have enjoyed your Arthurian adventures over the years and had/have access to Ren-faires to match. Something I am actually quite jealous of, as here in Britain and the Continent there is no such concepts. We might, if we're lucky get a day somewhere in a hall or industrial building with exhibitions and stalls, but one goes to see others dressed up and there's limited interactions, maybe a circle dance or so for the 'brave' in the audience to take part in. The only exception of something lasting a little longer is the Viking festival in York, but it's in February and therefore mainly indoors due to the weather, and the indoor events are quite costly, as we're talking York, a rich city with a rich background. Enjoy your Ren-faires, savour them! I will look forward to whatever video you intend to share with us 'croissants', I do not celebrate Christmas, but Yule, and that falls this year to mid-January following the old moon calendar. However, I celebrate Mothersnight on the 24th, watching a video on sewing by my favourite historical seamstress I feel does fit in well. Yeah renaires are a particularly American thing, but we don’t have the same kinds of focused reenactment groups and events like Jorvik, at least not outside Civil and Revolutionary wars (neither of which I am interested in), so there’s pros and cons wherever you live.

For machine sewing I use gutermann thread; for hand sewing I use Burnley and Trowbridge 80/3 linen thread; natural and black for this project. I always wax and iron my threads too.

I honestly believe the world is poorer for the loss of the NJ progressive eccentric take on medieval/renaissance tale. World is better for Bran. My opinion of the term "Anglo-Saxon" ...outside of the misuse by white supremacists and whatever academic debate, it's a commonly "understood" (in quotation marks) for everything of a certain time and place. and perfectly appropriate when in conversation with those whose "study" begins and ends with Disney's Sword in the Stone.

Honestly personally I'd suggest making something short and sweet to give YOU a break while not losing schedule, and a short tutorial feels like something that would bring slow but consistent views to make up for it being Christmas eve? When you do your sleeves, do you do them exact midpoint of the sleeve to the shoulder or do you offset it a bit?
The exact midpoint, otherwise the gusset is offset weirdly. For cotehardie sleeves, the seam is at the back but that is a shaped sleeve head, not a straight one.
