  • Here is the newest model of TGX tractor unit from MAN.
This is the new MAN TGX model for 2020. Was a pleasure to get to explore and drive the TGX for a few days, and compare it to my current MAN TGX.

Mind the paint work!!! Lovely to see she’s still got mirrors.

I must admit I didn’t take to the camera’s in my Actros at first, but now I’ve got used to them I find them far superior to mirrors. It’s like most new ideas people take a negative view, I did myself but now I’ve got used to cameras I wouldn’t go back to mirrors.

MAN, just got voted Truck of the year 2021. That’s quite an achievement. Perhaps there wasn’t to much competition this year, but there seems to be high hopes for this modified updated truck.
Scott, it will be interesting to watch your follow up video and summary of this motor.
Looking in from North America I like the DAFs to be honest.

I appreciated how frank you were about your impressions of the truck. Keen to see how these will be specced for the South African market - they'll probably retain the efficiency mode, but I don't see the hand wheel infotainment system really taking off to be honest. It actually seems gimmicky, and a button/touch screen combo would probably be more popular with drivers in any case.

As a review of old model to new model I found it very well covered all aspects for the driver's point of view and it was pretty comprehensive at that. By the way even my old 2012 model just sets the revs with a quick touch of the cruise set button. Can't wait to see what you think when you've had it on a proper journey.

@@ScottAndrews We need to manually adjust the idle on our trucks, since we run air compressors for unloading liquids and have to keep the pressure within a certain range. Our "old" MAN allow us to do this (just as our Actros do). I hope they have the same option in the new one as well. I also agree with you on the handbrake topic - there's been more than one occasion where I had to play with the handbrake to get going at all (tankers uphill in the winter can be a momma due to the weight shifting XD). The mirrors are a big improvement though. You could hide a freight train in the blind spot of the old model. Cameras are a no-go for us, since we drive a lot of hazmat (ADR) stuff and they are not permitted.

Good video of the new Man Tgx truck. Do most of the new trucks in Europe come with Automatic Transmissions now or are some guys still shifting manually. I used to own a few conventional Mack trucks in Canada which were reliable but did not have emissions on them due to the fact that they were older. Do the new trucks have many issues with SCR, DPF or EGR emissions or are they trouble free which is not the case in North America especially when off warranty.

Hey Scott I drive an MAN (the first model that came with lande departure etc.) as well, and my previous one was as well (the EURO 5 model, whichever one that was XD) both 400HP ones.
I have to say that yes, the audio system has been HORRIBLE in those 2, super tinny, no bass, etc., I currently have the bass cranked all the way up and the highs turned down to get something that actually kinda worth listening too
Also, the cruise control resume to idle up the engine should be in yours daily lorry as well, it has been in both of mine
All in all, with the changes I actually can't decide if I'd want this new model or want to stick with one of the older ones, there are things I like about it, but I think there's more things I don't like.
The 2 main things I don't like about the new one though are the Scania style gear selector on the stock and the electronic handbrake.
Personally I think electronic handbrakes are a safety concern (especially in normal cars, but trucks as well, for those who don't know car and truck brakes work vastly different), you can't "feather" the e-brake if your main brakes would, for whatever reason, fail and stay open/free like you coan with the normal analog style.
Anyway, I hope you liked the new truck and we'll probably get an updated video about your thoughts soon when you've had more time with it.
Remember to keep the rubber on the road ;)

I have driven the "new" Actros for a week and had the same concern. Theoretically you can feather the handbrake, since this is obliged by the law (3 independant brake systems are part of the homologation requirements) but they don't have the same feel to it.

Told you that dial thing for media is crap.
I like the steering column adjustment improvements but the dash to me is an arse. That tray at the end of the bed dictates which way around you sleep and for tall drivers it will be uncomfortable on the feet. Matress topper is the answer me thinks.
Personally I think all the driver aids are for the very basic LGV drivers out there who can not seem to cope with a gear stick or prox cruise. Just goes to show, when power, gear change and kick down controls are specked out by your transport manager, shows a lack of trust and a complete lack of truck driver respect.
I think the MAN new range has been rushed out, bodged with new bits stuck on a very old cab. It is sad to say the least. My hope is DAF do not make the same mistake with the new cf and xf.
Scott.. great cab tour , well done with info on switches and dash systems i can refer back to this video if I get one ( god I hooe not!) and full respect for using the mid lift wieght transfer button.
Otherwise known as the ' muppet' button. Cos there is a lot of muppets out there who do not use it or even know what it does and even more who can not be arsed or have the intelligence to use the mid lift when empty.... oh that will be the dence option in my opinion but they aint buying the tyres. My truck (tgx xl) is on 280k and still on original lift tyres, cos I use the WT button all the time under 20mph on turning at at store and tight junctions oh and even on steep hills to stop wheel spin.
Inexperienced drivers please look closely at what Scott is doing around farms and lanes with the Wieght transfer system. It will save egg on your face. Especially with winter around.
    100% great vid
100% great cab induction for us out there.
100% good driver compasion to the vehicke driven.
60% on the new truck. Its just too much of a mix of old and new and I do not think drivers will like it. However we will just have to accept it if our TM buys MAN next year.
Oh and the dealer put a card by the media screen saying that ' this cab has been sanitised'... steering wheel and dash had greasy finger marks all over the place in your video. So not sure what sort of hand over the truck got before it came to M&M.
Last time MAN Avonmouth serviced my truck, it came back with oil and greese all over the steering wheel and switches, etc. Never mind covid, it was left in a shit state by fitter.
See you about Scott. Thinking will try and hang on to my TGX as long as pos.

I fully agree with you on the topic of electronic assist systems. Many of the drivers nowadays (especially the younger ones) entirely rely on those and fall flat on their faces when stuff gets a bit out of the normal envelope of driving. We only drive bulk liquids and on snow or slippery surfaces all these "gimmicks" cause tons of issues. The load gushing back and forth (even when having baffles) totally overwhelms the systems and you can get in all kinds of trouble, where not getting off the spot is the least significant. Luckily our fleet has the option to go into manual mode on the gearbox which, together with switching off the traction control, allows for far better and safer driving in these conditions. The only thing that should NEVER be disabled is the brakes assist and emergency brake assist imo.

      Hi
The last MAN tgx I had before my current tgx had a mega brake assist fault. At 56mph on the motorway with cruise on or off the lorry would beep a warning, then flash ' risk of colision ' LED message then slam the brakes on. At 4am on a empty road. Then switch the media system on full blast and select the same track from my amazon music app. 3 or 4 time a day. MAN could not find out what was causing it. The it started to auto throttle with no driver input.
My company took the truck back to HQ and gave me another truck. This one is fine. I carry a moffett truck mounted forklift mounted on a SDC trailer with a spread rear axle that also steers. I think the moffett weight plays tricks on the diff sensors and there after the trucks CAN system. Especially when empty. I do 6 to 8 drops a day, each paller is about a tonne. I have learnt to use my spare key to leave ignition on when tipping so the CAN system stays live, this helps the lorry adjust the veriable power system as the weight comes off.
My traxon gearbox can be used in auto or manual or a mix, I can turn off eco mode and I have kick down enabled. This TGX copes better than the last one with multi drop town and city work but realy the software is set up for motorway. If you do not use kick down it keeps trying to change up at around 1000rpm then almost stalling. The gearbox clunks and bangs into gears on town work but on the motorway its fine. Oh and if the lorry hits a bump in the road the gearbox changes up?? This is a right arse ache on country roads.
I would rather a stick for the work I do, as I know I would be more efficient with almost all gear choices. But we have to remember the traxon system does not have eyes and ears and a nervous system, that will only ever belong to us humans lol. It will be a very long time before trucks are smarter than us .
      Regards
      BasherMAN

I have camera ‘s on my Actros instead of mirrors and their far superior to mirrors, and the active cruise control is a god send. No more breaking and accelerating just set the cruise control and let the truck computer do all the work. We’re glorified steering wheel attendants now🤣
